I don't think that you acted in a dick-ish way. You have to right to care or not care about anything you want, just because somebody else cares about it, doesn't mean you have to too.

Let me apologize in advance for making one of "those" threads, but I need some perspective.

I'll start from the beginning. Earlier today I got a chain text message from a friend. It was on about a 6 month old girl who had cancer, and was asking for money for an operation, because the apparent parents had no money, and asked to forward it to as many people as you could. It also said that if you didn't you were completely heartless, and if you deleted it, "karma would come back to give YOU cancer!"

It also was written with a surprisingly light tone, for 2 devestated parents and was laden in emoticons, so I question the integrity of this whole thing.

So anyways, I wrote back "No thanks, though I might be more inclined were it not for the threats."

And the response was: "Ur a dick"

I didn't respond because I knew it would just escalate. So that leads me to my question, am I really a dick for my response?

Also, I think its terrible when babies are diagnosed with cancer, but again, I question wether this is even true, even though it contained some teary pictures of a truly cancerous baby.

To be fair if you responded to every cry for help, I need money please etc.... You wouldnt have any time/money for yourself now would you?

Not that I'm saying you shouldn't support something, we train guide dogs. Give time, and a hell of a lot of effort training the dog for a year. The the heaart break of having to give them up... its quite sad when you've had them since they were 6 weeks old and then they're just gone. The guide dogs need this help if they didnt get it they wouldnt be able to run the service they do. I've helped out with fundraiing and stuff too, so when I don't respond to something like that I don't feel bad.

I (and you) have a to live aswell. You can't spend all of it looking after and helping other people. I dont really agree with what your friend or whoever sent you that message is doing I think charity that's received out of guilt(on your part) isnt really charity at all.

I ignore all chain mail, or I probably would have replied with 'I'll take my chances with cancer'.

It's only a text, it's not like it gave you somewhere to donate, if it did, I would ignore it.

Asking for help through a chain letter is like requesting help for your poor infirm grandmother by asking everyone to send money through your bank in Nigeria. Ain't gonna happen.

Here's a quick and easy test to see if you are a dick or not. (Wish I could put it into Flowchart form)

STEP 1. Check if there are any short curly hairs on your feet, if yes, go to 2. If no, you are not a dick
STEP 2. Check if your head secrets a clear or white liquid, If yes then proceed to step 3. If no, you are not a dick.
STEP 3. Check to see if you grow bigger if you rub your mid section If yes, you are a dick, If no, you are not a dick, but should probably see a doctor about the whole head thing.

Two out of three means I'm clear, right?

I don't forward these texts, and the people I love haven't died yet. (YET- my dad is going in for surgery this Friday.) I ignore all the ones that say, "If you don't forward this, then you don't love God." God loves ALL his children. (my family is religious, lol.) Those text messages are fake, but I do know of one about a missing child awhile back. His picture was in a magazine of mugshots & he was missing for awhile.

So some texts might be real, & most are fake. Absolutely NO MONEY from your bill goes toward ANY foundation if you forward it unless it's a government-sponsored organization, like they did with Haiti. So don't feel guilty about not forwarding that text, and no, you aren't a dick, cuz then I'm one too (though I'm a girl...) xD

Regardless of what the text deals with, I don't think you're a dick. I personally would have just said No, and why are you sending me these texts?

A fellow classmate died in my grade. I never really knew this girl, and nor did I particularly care for her. When she passed away, the school tried to sell patches for 10 dollars a pop. If it was like, a dollar or something, I would've done it, but 10 dollars? The family wasn't even accepting the money so where the fuck was that going to? I didn't buy one, does that make me a dick?

Never take chain letters seriously, EVER. Besides, bad karma doesn't give you cancer. It gives you a hilarious death.

Also, if they made it sound like such a light subject, and then respond with "ur a dick", without even taking the extra tenth of a second to hit the y and the o key, maybe patronize me and capitalize the y, and I know I'm asking for a lot here but let's add an e and an apostrophe to the "ur" and hell, they went this far, what's so wrong with just the pinking reaching down and hitting the period, then I perhaps would seem to care more. I don't know what it is about typing so badly, but I don't take serious matters serious. If someone sent me an email saying "i just had n aborshun im gunna rays funs 2 help pay 4...." blah blah blah, then I typically won't believe it. Just the fact that they replied with such a lame response, completely ignoring any knowledge they may have learnt up until the 4th grade, would make me not even care that they said that.
