I wouldn't call Dead Space 1 and 2 horror games even though they do go for the jump scares and disgusted scare with body parts and monsters in your face, but I still think they are good games, just not horror.


So, if you got the money too spare and are interested in those games, I'd say go for it.

They're really not horror games at all.

ZP DOES have it right here, these games simply are not SCARY, they do not have the atmosphere, pacing, tension or feeling of vulnerability required to be frightening.
It's great at STARTLING, but not really SCARING.

THAT BEING SAID:

Dead Space 1 and 2 are both excellent ACTION games. They have great monster design, fun weapons and really splendid level design. Both games keep things mixed up and moving quickly, they both reward exploration and use a brilliant 'breadcrumbs' system for keeping you always informed of where you're meant to be going.

The storyline is incredibly corny... really really really incredibly incredibly corny, ridiculous and predictable (and the Templesmith comic is no better, seriously the storyline is literally 'Scientology Expy Causes Repeated Zombie Apocalypse In Space', which is fantastic on paper but the story takes itself SO VERY SERIOUSLY that it had my eyes rolling pretty much nonstop) but that barely matters, really, because the gameplay is so very spot-on.

The controls are great, monster design is great, dismembering monsters is tremendously fun, gameplay changes up just enough to ensure you will never be bored, these are both really solid, really fun, really splendid ACTION games, with a horror theme.

This is NOT Amnesia. You will NOT be terrified.

You will, however, enjoy the ride, as the ride's a pretty fucking good one.

Worth full price, imo, practically a must-buy at this deep discount.

Judas Priest! Ninety bucks for the comic? Luckily, I got the animated comic a few years ago, and freakin' loved it. Years later, I get a debit card so I can order online....but I don't believe in ninety bucks for a shortish comic.

I agree, not horror. I class them as more of a intense action game. No anything that relies on excessive amounts of gore and jump scares is not horror. In fact, I don't even think there is a genre for that. Amnesia is a horror, focusing on what you don't see than what you do.

Turn Vsync off in the options menu and the Mouse works without problems, so give it a shot smiles!

Bad port yes, bad game no! Not great, but well worth the price of admission.

Horror doesn't necessarily mean scary. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and Stoker's Dracula aren't scary in the least, but are considered classic examples of horror. Horror is more in the atmosphere and story elements than in the scare factor.

OT: Damn, and I just spent all my money too. Have been meaning to pick them up, but other games that I want more keep popping up.

When Dracula and Frankenstein were first published, they were considered the absolute apex of shocking horror.

Those books scared the piss out of an entire generation.

The reason you don't consider them scary NOW is because of ALL THE TIME THAT HAS PASSED.

Audiences are much more 'sophisticated' now, which is a fancy way of saying 'we have seen all of this a thousand times by now.'

Those stories are old hat. 'Quaint', as it were. That's why they didn't scare you, because those stories are so ingrained into the popular culture, even before you read them, you already knew them.

Before you opened up the book, you already KNEW that Count Dracula was a vampire.
Back then? THEY DIDN'T. THAT WAS A SURPRISE TO READERS OF THE TIME.

What's more, the very concept of what a 'vampire' was was RADICALLY DIFFERENT before that book was published; vampires prior to that point, as per predominantly Germanic folklore, were quite literally nothing more than hemophagic zombies, period.

The entire concept of what we now accept to be a vampire, the shapeshifting, the old castles, the aristocratic titles, ALL the powers, ALL OF THAT, was invented by Bram Stoker in that book.

Every single thing you take for granted about Vampires, the tropes and ideas that Anne Rice, Poppy Z Brite, a thousand movies, a million embarrassing romance novels and insufferable teenagers on gothic forums and now Stephanie Meyer have altered and adapted and made their own, Bram Stoker invented

Once upon a time, all that shit was BRAND NEW AND DIFFERENT.

And when it was, that shit scared EVERYONE WHO READ IT.

was thinking to get part 2 since it is really cheap to get. but the ?A activation stuff scares me. im afraid that origin might be later on required. so this stopped me from buying it. i really dont trust ?A anymore. they have already ruined my purchase of mass effect 3

i read here that some have different prices. i live in hong kong and both games are available for 12.49USD. if you want to buy only one, DS 1 for 7.50USD and DS 2 for 15.00 USD.

Damn the dead space comic is expensive... Thankfully I picked up my copy 2nd hand for $10-20 a few years ago.

Unless you plan to play Dead Space with a controller, its pretty awful on the PC. The devs thought it was an absolutely wonderful idea to treat the mouse like a joystick so instead of your aim doin what its supposed to do when you say move it to the right, it treats that as if you held the stick to the right and stops the moment you let go.

In order to get the damn thing to even respond you have to turn mouse sensitivity way the hell up. To get it to respond how it should respond you have to turn the mouse sensitivity up in game and then go and turn the dpi of your mouse up higher as well. The best part about that? Go into a menu after you do that stuff and your camera jerks like you just sneezed.

Basically its a really really shitty port and you shouldn't waste your five bucks.

Note...I have no idea if this is also an issue with Dead Space 2.

I'm curious if you played it pre patch or have this impression from post patch.
They patched the controls which imo, fixed a lot of the early problems with the controls and it is quite playable last I checked.

Its been a while since I played it to be honest so chances are prepatch. I might have to fire it up again to give it a fairer shot, though truth be told even if it was better now I still wouldn't want to give my money to a company that was perfectly willin to ship a game as horrendously optimized for the pc as that one was. Its why I was so hesitant to even think about buyin Saints Row the Third for PC after the hack job that was done on Saints Row 2.

I found the games suspenseful if you played on the higher difficulties, but that's mainly because you're constantly on edge. One or two attacks can ruin your day, and if you're going for the Hard Core mode in DS2, a ruined day often involves the throwing of a controller. So yeah, those games, for me, were suspenseful. Some jump scare tactics too, but they never had the atmosphere like the old Silent Hill games. Now, being stuck in a situation like that, terrifying beyond belief. Still, these games are a blast to play.

$95 for a comic? What, is it printed on gold paper or something? I understand older books and comics being crazy high, but isn't Dead Space new (relatively speaking)?

In the Australian store, Dead Space is $3.75, Dead Space 2 is $17.50 and the two-pack is $21.24 (all $USD)...

A shame. I would have bought them otherwise.

Oh well. Back to the other dozen or so games I own but have never played XD
