Amazon Breaks PS3 Slim Launch Date?

Do you really, really, really want to get your hands on the PS3 Slim and can't wait a day longer than you have to? E-tailer Amazon.com may be your best bet, apparently pre-empting the official PS3 Slim launch by five days.

When Sony unveiled the PS3 Slim last week [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93974-Sony-Reveals-PS3-Slim-Drops-PS3-Prices-to-299], it triumphantly announced that gamers would be able to pick up the shiny new package as early as September 1st worldwide. For most people, that was excitingly soon. For others, it apparently wasn't soon enough.

Register Hardware [http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/08/25/amazon_preempts_ps3_slim_launch/] reports that Amazon.com's North American branch is planning to deliver the PS3 Slim to gamers in the US a full five days ahead of Sony's stated launch date, after they "successfully placed an order for a PS3 Slim with Amazon's US arm and received an estimated delivery date of 27 August."

This news comes off as slightly strange, considering that Amazon earlier warned it might suffer shortages of the probably-popular PS3 redesign, and so was limiting orders to one per household [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94020-Amazon-Predicts-PS3-Shortages-Limits-Preorders]. So, even if you get it early, you can only get one.

Or, looking at it from another point of view, it's understandable that Amazon might be short on stock come September 1st, because they sold it all five days beforehand.

School started on ~7th of September for me way back when. Buying it five days earlier would give me five days extra PS3 playtime before I have to start procrastinating schoolwork again.

When this was first announced, I could've sworn they said they would start being available on the 24th, with guaranteed launches in various places as of September 1st.

Then, for days, I've seen various articles talking about different places breaking the street date. But that doesn't make sense, because I didn't think there was a street date.

Is my brain making things up?

I also remember a few adds etc mentioning the first date was going to be the 24th.

From Brian Crecente during the Kotaku liveblog of Sony's press conference:
"crecente: Release date for slim will vary by region but available everywhere by sept 1 l " [a href=http://kotaku.com/5339926/sony-2009-gamescom-presser-liveblog-spectacular]1:37[/a]

Also, the leaked KMart page (which they posted too soon) indicated a release date of August 24th. That's since been changed to September 1st.

I'd almost think that they planned a August 24th launch, came up shy on enough consoles, and pushed the "official" date, without stipulating that retailers who had enough stock had to wait.

Thats the problem...classes for me start September 1st...so I don't see much point in buying one right before the school year starts. (did this ever cross Sony's mind?)

Uh, to get it 5 days earlier I guess? I dunno, as Amnestic said, the school year is starting for most people around this area.
