Amazon Predicts PS3 Shortages, Limits Preorders

Amazon.com [http://www.amazon.com] is limiting preorders of the PS3 Slim to one per household, claiming that the device is already in short supply across the U.S.

That sure didn't take long. Despite being unveiled Wii [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93974-Sony-Reveals-PS3-Slim-Drops-PS3-Prices-to-299] itself. So even though it's only officially existed for 48 hours and won't actually be on shelves until September 1, it should come as no great surprise that supply shortages are already being predicted and as a result, Amazon has elected to limit preorders of the console to one per household in the U.S.

"As you may know, the PlayStation 3 120 GB is in great demand," the company said in a message posted on the PS3 preorder site [http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-80GB/dp/B001COU9I6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1250781006&sr=8-8]. "In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase [the] PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase one PlayStation 3 120 GB unit."

I think some of this demand is the prediction that the PS3 Slim will be a hot holiday item. So people are getting ready to sell on ebay.

On the other hand the PS3 is still a highly rated Blu-Ray player with some of the shortest load times compared to other systems, so there could be demand from people who are finally ready to get a Blu-Ray player. The $299 price point still keeps it competitive in that market.

I know I will get a PS3 eventually, and the reason I didn't previously was due to the high price. Personally, I am waiting until God of War 3 comes out before I buy a PS3, and still hoping they will add the emotion chip back in...

I must admit it looks pretty damn sweet, I'm thinking about selling my ps3 and buying a slim.
Maybe this will actually push the developers to start caring for their ps3 games...

You may get lucky. I'm sure they'll probably release some special bundle for GoW3. Also there's rumors that they're working on an emulation patch rather than doing hardware again. Or you could always go on ebay and order a PS3 that has the emotion engine in it.
