If I'm not wrong, the votes for the 2 major parties in the last 3 elections have been close to 50:50 each time. When W was bombing Iraq, people protested. When Obama is trying to reform their healthcare, people protested.

If the US was to split into 2 countries, what would it be?

I could imagine a Christian Theocracy in one, (The US has never had a non-Christian President?)

and a Liberal scientific commune for the other.

Split it whatever way you like, I'm interested in hearing your ideas.

Try reading "Black Man", a science fiction book by Richard Morgan.

It involves that situation, where America has split to leave liberal and pro-technology coastal states sandwiching an ultra-Christian, ultra-conservative central nation. (I might also suggest that Morgan is not a great fan of the American religious right, and is not kind to the religious, conservative nation.)

If the liberal half is made up of liberal why would they stoop to communism? A huge parts of the liberals are made up of people who a really for a completely free and nearly tax-less market. this is near enough what i was thinking. I've noticed there are alot of people that don't know what libreals, communists, facists, conservatives are and yet still trash them or have an opinion on it. How can someone have an opinion on something they know next to nothing about. Oh well.

I mean why not, most democratic countries in the world have usually a pretty straightforward vote, 60% or above or a landslide victory like Japan's recent election.

They could be the EU of America, with Canada and Mexico thrown in the mix

Communism and Facism are like polar opposites. Capitalism is the in between. Socialism is a little on both sides.

Then yes, it would be lovely.

Unfortunately, the great clashing dodo bird's left and right wings seem to have the notion that the entire world must thing like them or they are wrong, and must be forced to 'see the light'. Therefore any attempt to separate the country without such a magical wall would result in civil war, and massive failure, even further humiliating the bird in front of all its feathered neighbors.

Screw two countries, lets break up all of the US and canada

british columbia, washington state, and oregon could be the united states of cascadia
throw in the prairies together,
california could be one
the southwest (a real new new mexico?)
the nation of texas
the confederacy
florida could be a corporate state run by the disney corporation,
ontario and michigan could become one and happily make cars together that no one buys (thats not actually true, they make a lot of japanese cars in ontario)
and Quebec could finally get the independence they wanted from the dreaded english speakers that they oh so crave.
Plus im sure there are a bunch of other places that could claim independence (the principality of long island?)
This will be awesome... And then they could all join together in an EU type supra nation just to make things more fun and complicated.

i dont know or care. But if it was split like you say i can see war between the 2, and thus will start the american war that all other conties will not care about with the aftermath being america is just one of those places.
Although i must admit a war in the US would be different from all the desirt wars they have been having.

Conclusion: splitting USA in two countries is not a good idea. It's called United States of America for a reason,you know.
