Amy Developer Plays Down ICO Comparisons

The latest footage of VectorCell's upcoming survival horror game Amy is more than a little reminiscent of the highly regarded PS2 classic ICO, but there's more to it than sugary-sweet hand-holding.

In Amy, protagonist and Elena Fisher [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Fisher] look-a-like Lana has been infected with the obligatory world-ending zombie virus. The only thing between her and a bad case of the cranium munchies is Amy, a mute, psychic moppet whose presence allows Lana to temporarily fight off the infection. This leads to a lot of hand-holding and co-op puzzle solving, and when it comes to hand-holding and co-op puzzle solving, one name always crops up.

"When you mention 'a very unique relationship' in a video game, it may bring to mind ICO, a game that many of us consider a milestone in video game history," wrote Publisher Lexis Numérique's Djamil Kemal on the PlayStation.Blog. "The recent re-release of the HD version by PlayStation brought back many memories for us. The first time you finished ICO, what remained was great emotional depth and a rare feeling of empathy for Yorda, the young woman you try to protect. Before playing ICO, the simple idea of protecting a non-playable character seemed tedious and dull. And yet, in ICO, you never had the feeling of doing a long escort mission. You really wanted to protect her."

He's hit the nail on the head there. ICO was, when you break it down, essentially a very long escort mission, an element of game design long derided for being dull at best and utterly frustrating at worst. ICO encouraged emotional investment in the game world, so much so that even when Yorda's AI was being kind of wonky, I never felt the urge to kick her off a bridge. Which is unusual, for me at least.

Kemal did, however, downplay the straight up comparisons.

"In Amy, we didn't try to ape ICO and the two games are quite different; each developer has its own references, world, and vision," he continued. "Not mentioning ICO when releasing a game that enables you to hold a secondary character by the hand wouldn't have been honest toward Mr. Ueda's work and innovative feature."

Amy is the brainchild of French game designer Paul Cuisset, creator of Flashback and Fade to Black, and is currently scheduled for release on PSN, XBLA and PC. No word on a release date just yet.

Nope, looks like a rip-off of ICO to me.

Just kidding. May not be a rip-off, but it is clearly taking cues from Team ICO, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Following in a great games footsteps can lead to good things. I'm worried about the direction, though. For example, Lana saying "You did it!" If that continues, it would make their relationship really irritating. ICO built the relationship between Ico and Yorda entirely through gameplay. This seems like they're forcing you to care about Amy, sort of like if Peter Molyneux saying, "No, you REALLY love this dog. Trust me."

Huh. Well, I can't think of the last time I played as a protagonist infected by the zombies virus and one small step from turning into a brain connoisseur. I'll keep it on my radar.

It doesn't look that Ico-ish to me.

Call me overly optimistic, but I think people can see two characters holding hands without screaming rip off. Hopefully.

The game certainly looks interesting.

Clearly a rip off of Ico, minus the settting, the characters, the vast majority of the mechanics...

Oh yeah, and the kid can apparently gives off waves of telekinetic doom...

Clearly, you know, despite looking nothing like it, and having different characters in a different setting doing entirely different things, it might as well be the same.

Heh. Okay, I'll bite, so it's not Ico. That doesn't change the fact that it was hilarious watching them turn to see the zombie running then start booking it like someone dumped hotsauce down their pants. Though, I will be severely disappoint if there's not a moment where you become more zombie and try to eat the little girl.

Actually I thought ICO was one long tedious escort mission. I never got round to finishing it.

Uh... no I didn't. I think most people don't really have that much emotional connection to Yorda. Don't get me wrong, ICO was a good game. But Yorda was not it's strong suit.

It's Lexis-Numerique. The only other game I've played published by them was "The Experiment", an even more intense escort quest than ICO. And while it was derided by some, I freaking love it.

Apparently, Lexis Numerique knows a good escort quest when they see one. I'll trust them.

You know, I can see where the ICO referance comes from with the hand holding, but to be honest the overall vibe I get there is a bit more "Rule Of Rose" than ICO.

Ultimatly Amy seems to operate much like the dog did in that game, with a few embellishments, I mean as far as being a device to move distant objects and solve puzzles, and alerting the player of danger. She's basically like the Canine companion in a lot of games now, except as a little girl. Oddly comments about her being realistic and how expressive she is despite being silent remind me a lot of how games nowadays sell their canine gimmicks.

I think of "Rule Of Rose" because of the survival horror atmosphere (as opposed to fantasy), and the simply fact that you apparently engage in combat and such. I guess "Haunting Ground would also be an apt comparison, but I think "Rule Of Rose" did it better and it just seems closer to me.

Basically I don't think of Ico much, except that it's a little girl. Keep the game the same, switch out the hand holding for some occasional barking noises and a skin swap of Amy for a dog, and I'd imagine it wouldn't be all that differant. :)

Honestly I'm still waiting for a game where you get a decent sized monkey as an animal companion in a survivial horror type game or something. You know a cross between "Every Which Way But Loose", "Y The Last Man", and pretty much any survival horror title. I mean it would be awesome to watch a monkey punch out zombies while your fighting back to back. :)

Maybe for DLC we'll get a pack that replaces Amy with a monkey, and the zombies with insane dudes, and redoes the title as "X The Last Woman".... the zombie gimmick replaced with why she's the only lady surviving on the planet... could it have something to do with the monkey? Who knows, who cares.... let the situation play out for lulz. :)

Wow, who wrote the dialogue?

"Amy, I'm pleased I found you!"

You just found a 9 year old girl (I'm guessing), who you apparently care for a great deal, in a run down locker somewhere in an abandoned building in the middle of the fucking apocalypse...and you're pleased? That's it? I was pleased last time I found that there was a slice of pizza left in a box I thought was empty.

The voice actress sucks too, like it wasn't really all important she found her. Made it sound as if she'd found the girl being gnawed on by a horde of zombies, she could have just shrugged it off.

Also, that woman could totally have fit through that opening at 0:36 and I found it hysterical that she shoved the kid in there to avoid endangering herself.

Wow...this woman is sociopath....

Pre-ordered.

BUT THEY'RE HOLDING HANDS.

I'm not sure about this game. Looks kind of dull to me.

This is the first time I heard about this game. It look ok I guess (I haven't played ICO so I don't know about the similarity other than the hand holding).

So Bad.
But really, this game could be good, if they implement the horror like in Clock Tower anyways, if you are going to be Force Pushing zombies all day then i would rather play Rule Of Rose or Haunting Ground...

Lana really does resemble Elena a little too much. My very first thought as soon as they showed Lana was "DRAKE WHERE ARE YOU?! SHE'S GONNA GET SHOT!"
