guys guys, i have the best idea for a game EVER! it starts off realistic. you're getting shot up by multiple enemies and are lying on the ground dying and bleeding. suddenly you get sucked into another dimension, like silent hill, and everything is UNREALISTIC! huge explosions, tons of health and armor, insane physics coupled with a radical art shift. sometimes, you have to shift back to cover-based, 2 weapon carrying, brownish-grey reality to, i dunno, do some stuff. the final boss will require both realistic AND unrealistic dimensions to defeat it!

what do you guys think? who should develop this if it isnt a godawfully stupid idea? i'm thinking insomniac.

A game idea should be more developed...

But no, it doesn't seem like a good idea. It's not original.

Actually, if you were able to switch dimensions whenever you wanted to, it'd be kind of cool, since you could throw enemies high up in to the air in the "unrealistic" dimension, switch back to "realistic," and watch them fall to their doom.

But yeah, needs more thought and development.

That's pretty much the ONLY thing you could do in a dimensional shift. Also, if you could switch whenever I feel like people would play realistic until they start dying, then they switch to unrealistic.

Let me just say this, asking for critisim on this site is a bad idea. People say it is "constructive" when most people are just complaining.

Give it a bit more thought in the fine details specially the dimensional shifting and you perhaps have something.

This is my argument against realism in the first bloody place!! IT'S A COMPUTER GAME GODDAMN IT. Why does any escapism need to be justified narratively in any capacity?! *glares at Bulletstorm*

I agree, this is awesome. But it wouldn't have to be too limited, I mean if its like viewtiful joe and you only have a few seconds of bad-assedness, it would essentially feel like bullet-time.

A barrel might not be explosive in reality, but then in the other mode it rocks the building.

... but there can be a downside.
Maybe your enemies are hard core as well, and can use the power as well. Certain bosses can, I don't know, catch a rocket propelled grenade, light their cigarrette with it, then throw it back at you. It can be over the top silly... which makes it, again, awesome. ... Then again, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.

I'm going too far into the kick-ass and not looking enough at the realism aspect... you don't want it to resort to cover based whenever your out of the mode, right? ... but then again, it doesn't solely have to be a gameplay gimick, I think it in and of itself is really cool, and can make for a cool concept.
And of course a fully fleshed out version put up here may cry out for ridicule by the users of the site, so I can see how you jumped in, said the concept, and jumped out.

Maybe I'm just talking too much to put off doing an essay. That works too...

Now what if the 'real' mode made you safe from all sorts of dangers? You enter a sewer in the bad-ass mode and its filled with monsters or something that tear you and everything in there to shreds, in 'real' mode, you can see an outline of them, so that when you're down there you can temporarily turn on the power mode so it can kill your enemies, and still give yourself enough time to turn it off when they leap at you.

... I like good concepts... it means I can play with them.

Oh! And maybe in the story each character can be awesome in a different style. You can have a spiky haired anime kid weilding a giant sword, a psychic goth girl, an old guy who essentially becomes Clint Eastwood in one of his roles... I don't know, Dirty Harry or a cowboy.

But then once they get into the other mode, where everything is dark and grainy, they lose their powers, becomes fearful and useless... unless if you throw in an RPG aspect, make them level up and eventually build courage to help in other ways. (Of course this may involve protecting them... giving them a good AI so they don't ruin the game if they are your allies.)

I say for the people reading this thread, it will be a bit more fun to add to it than put it down... Give it a shot. It doesn't matter if your ideas are good.

This is a very basic idea, of course, but if it was developed further along with a group of designers, I could see this working.

Of course, you need more than an idea in the end.

Sounds like The Last Action Hero formula put into a game. Interesting.

There's one major setback- you need to define your target audience. The hardcore crowd may like the start (if they're not pushed away by the intentional 'no win' scenario) but will lose interest during the arcadey main part of the game, whereas the arcade crowd might never make it to that part because the game starts in a style they hate (and from the get go they are faced with an intentional no win scenario).

Why does the shift occur? What is the importance of the shift? What is the importance of having to utilize both dimensions? Is there a reason you are under fire? Who or what is your character? Are they the only one capable of switching dimensions? Is all of reality shifting or this some kind of psychological trauma he is suffering?

What you have described is not a game idea but a game mechanic. It has potential in that regard but I don't think it could hold up the entire game by itself.

Because a world has to make sense within itself. Bulletstorm without an explanation to the dropkits would be utterly rubbish. It would be a Deus Ex mechanic. Magical boxes that reward you with gear for points.

Bulletstorm did not, By ANY means overdo it, man. They just said "This device on your arm rates your skill", and left it at that; which is fair enough.

They didn't actually try to explain why the military values such outlandish skills in the first place, which is good because you're not supposed to care about that at all *glares at Yahtzee's hypocrisy*

Yeah, like I said, needs more thought. The switching between dimensions would probably have some sort of limit, but I agree, there's not much you could do with it.

I think this is an idea that would appeal to both fanbases...

...but then end up pleasing neither.
