Analyst Predicts Big Numbers for BioShock Infinite

Will BioShock Infinite sell more copies than any other game in the series before it? At least one analyst is saying yes.

Despite not coming out until next year, analysts are already weighing in on how many units BioShock Infinite [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003O6EB70/ref=s9_simh_gw_p63_d0_g63_i4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1SE0WNKP096HYB28QEJ5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846] will sell, with Mike Hickey of Janco Partners predicting that Irrational will ship nearly five million units of the game at launch.

Writing in a note to investors, Hickey said that the first BioShock shipped 2.2 million copies in its first year, and sold 4 million copies overall. The second game - which was made by 2K Marin, and not Irrational - didn't fare quite as well, only selling 3 million copies. In his note, Hickey said that he expected Infinite to surpass both games, generating around $221 million in sales.

With so little hard information about BioShock Infinite, Hickey is likely basing a lot of his prediction on the buzz surrounding the game, both from the press, and from members of the public who have seen it at shows like PAX East. I'm not entirely sure how that excitement translates into such a specific number, but then again, I'm not a market analyst.

BioShock Infinite comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 at some point in 2012.

I'm kind of willing to take Bioshock Infinite with a grain of salt. A big one. There were so many missed chances in Bioshock 2 to do some really neat gameplay things, but they went and played it straight and safe. I'm just afraid all the stuff they're promising about Infinite will kind of go the same way.

EDIT: Okay so it's different publishers but I still think Irrational is just retreading a lot of the same old ground. Call me a skeptic.

EDIT EDIT: I mean developers.

As I recall, the people who made the original Bioshock didn't actually make Bioshock 2, but they are making Infinite. With that in mind, I believe that Infinite should be a great game, as long as whoever is making it remembers what made Bioshock great. For me, it was the sound, and the mid-story twist that took what you were used to about video games and used it against you.

As long as the protagonist won't be empty, the steampunk is cranked up a notch and Vigors will be just as much fun to use as Plasmids, I'm game.

I edited. I don't know, like I said, they seem to be sticking well within their comfort zones on a lot of the story aspects, and it won't work. People will be on the look out for the "would you kindly". That's what I call the M. Night Syndrome. The first time was so great everyone expected better and there was no way to live up to those expectations.

I'm not going to pass judgement on it, but I'm going to cast it a weathered eye.

Well... here's hoping the guy is right.

It would be really nice to see a game like Infinite get rewarded for actually attempting a good narrative in an interesting setting.

'Cause we all know what happens when these kind of games fail.

I am looking forward to seeing something more of this at Pax Prime in less then two weeks!

(Also I tried to comment on this shortly after it was posted and I could not. That was odd.)
