The news come from Chile

A 16-year-old boy in Chile has been charged with killing his elder brother in a fight over the use of a PlayStation, police have said.

The boy was angered when his 18-year-old brother turned on the games console without his permission.

He allegedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him in the chest.

Police said the youth had told them that "things got out of control". He could face five years in prison under the charges filed.

Homicide investigator Gilberto Opazo said the brothers had been abandoned by their mother and lived in care for 10 years before a Belgian woman took them in.

She was visiting Belgium when the death occurred, he added.

I know this is very rare to happen, but still astonish me how someone can undertake such drastic measures over his console use!?
Could be a grim advertisement thou: "PS3, you will kill for it, you will die for it!".

Ironicly not only he killed his brother, but he most likely will never touch a PS3 again. Cruel and dumb crime.

Just two weeks after the 14-year-old russian killed his father over his PC keyboard.

I hate gaming related murders, for obvious reasons that they are murders and are linked with gaming.

I would like to see some news about someone getting murdered over a Twix bar for once instead of only picking stories that have a gaming link.

EDIT: I'd like to point out I am not complaining about OP or that he/she has posted this story, it is just my opinion on the media in general

Why do we only ever hear about phycos that play games? Why don't you ever hear about the guy that snapped because a Jonas Brothers or Hannah Montana concert was sold out?

Goddamn thats awful though I guess the lions share of the problem is with the individual and the console.

I am googling my friend! With 6 billion people out there the chances become quiet plausible.

... Urgh. Another gaming-related debacle? What, is it trendy now among journalists to report about this shit and nothing else?

I think this is really nothing to do with the console but rather the last straw in a doomed situation.

The funny thing is, the kid was probably a nutcase, he could just as easily killed someone because they stole a chocolate from him, and I'd like to see someone try to argue that the chocolate made him into a killer like they always try with video games.

I propose a different link between this case and that of the 14-year-old:

LOUSY PARENTING

I won't deal with the Russian story; that's for another thread. Being without parents is not going to do good things to their heads, nor is being abandonned (temporarily) by their foster parent a recipe for well-adjusted people. I seriously want to know why more journalists don't draw attention to these things.

If a kid is going to kill his brother over -anything-, I seriously doubt the actual thing has much to do with it. The problem was there long before the Playstation got involved, in my opinion.

Erm, a kid got killed, lest we not forget that. Ignore the gaming debate, this is about murder which ranks higher than gaming in terms of illegal activities.

True, I suppose, but like pretty much anyone here I can't help but think of the repercussions of each one of these news items - people will not mourn the dead but instead focus on the scapegoat... and we all know what that is.

Trying to get the media to pay attention to that is the difficult bit, after all controversy is juicy to them.

cause the only ones that even consider going there are fragile white kids and their parents. and the parents would just be relieved they got out of it with no blame to them.

On the other hand... A parent going ballistic and killing the ticket guy because they are NOT sold out would actually be quite hilarious =P

I think you hit the right note, at least on my opinion. These kids were dumped by their parents and were left alone for years until this belgium lady gave them shelter. Not saying tragedy would certainly occur but the hell they have been through probably pushed this to happen. Yet yes, the news title points to the PS3 instead of those very (ir)relevant factors. As for the russian boy, I think he was just a crazy twat. Can't tell about this guy but since the discription doesnt say he went back to play on the PS3 I guess he realized what he did the moment his brother stopped breathing.
