It's a shame, because i actually used to really like watching the wright stuff.

Most of the subjects discussed on there were pretty interested, and it had some good debates.

however if you bash my favourite hobby, i say bad! Matthew Wright bad!

I shall not be watching it again.

"Apparently at 10.30 in the morning during the school holidays, it's fine to show scenes from an 18 rated game to set context of how it causes violence," the group wrote [http://gamersvoice.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=118:the-wright-stuff-discusses-whether-violent-video-games-lead-to-violent-behaviour&catid=3:gv-news&Itemid=3], "which goes in some way the level ignorance of all involved in the program on the subject being discussed."
Oh ho! Now something like that would get under the skin of anyone targeted by such a blow. Can't fault the logic.

I agree with the complaint. To have an entire group of people on a talk show hold up violent games and say that they turn people into murderers and anyone who says otherwise is being paid by those people who make those games is being unjust. Could they themselves be being paid by people who can't stand to let violence in video games exist? Those groups undeniably exist and could easily do what they want to to make their opinions heard.

Anyone who wants to see the episode click here and see for yourself, so long as you live in the UK.

Calumon: If what they say is true, and a bajillion people bought the last army... Call of... what's it called... game, then why am I still able to talk to people without being afraid of them hurting me?
Oh great, of all the mother fu--cover your ears Calumon--mother fucking anime I try to watch, LEGALLY MAY I ADD, it says you can't watch it in England but the one thing that you can watch EXCLUSIVELY in England it's this shite. Jesus, ANYTHING ON CHANNEL 5 EVEN. Bollocks.

I dislike the use of scapegoat's for reasons people do things.
Look, I've played violent games all my life, started with the Heretic game which was similar to Doom.

I know right from wrong because my first teacher: My Parents! did their damn job. These people try to find way to say its someone else who caused this person from flipping out and doing something like this.

These guys/gals shot this girl. They are not babies who don't understand pain or death. They knew what they were doing. Personally, I think people who kill people, especially like this, need to be killed off as well. They knew what was happening and they still did it. They went and did their plan to shoot up the place. In my books, if I was the leader of a country, they would get the death penalty if there was concrete evidence.

Actually, Wright himself seemed to be the only one on the panel actually sticking up and arguing for gaming, or at least bringing up counter points. The other three were the ones assuming their gut feelings had more validity than reports that apparently weren't correct anyway.

There isn't much I can honestly add to this heap. But in the name of critical thinking, anything "proved" by common sense should be immediately considered opinion until scientifically proven otherwise. Of course the majority of readers on this site are educated and critical enough to understand this, but for the few youthful lurkers that may have read this far: take it as life advice.

Wow ok... That's fair... So basically if you don't agree with us, you are biased and we will ignore you.
They don't have facts, studies, or frankly any sort of real logic behind what they do and say so they can't stand up in an argument. Instead of trying to argue you, knowing they can't win in a war of logic, they come up with reasons why they shouldn't listen to you in the first place. Either that or they drag the argument away into something else entirely, usually to something personal, to distract you and anyone watching from the fact that they've got nothing to respond with.

Welcome to conservatism.

Wow, i just played some mw2 and now i suddenly start to feel like i should kill people.. *facepalm*
I do belive that gaming affects people in little ways, as everything else does but this is just bullshit and directed to flower hatted house wives as a fearmongering(?).
Bah, i'm so happy when new generations start to step in to place the old ones, and then videogames will finally get their recognicion as an art form and major entertainment.

Could this show have been any more biased or narrow-sighted? You know the answer.

Jesus christ, doesn't mister Wright pay attention. It was olbviously Die hard that caused the shooting.

OT: Quite a bad thing to present as fact, I hope the channel responseble puts an end to the wild antics.

How about the time the host accidentally (on purpose) named Jhon Leslie as the anonymous rapist mentioned in Ulrika Jonsson's autobiography.

Here are some comments from The Wright Stuff channel 5 website on the show:

Vivienne Percy

Violence breeds violence...... Anyone considered that the people who play and are affected by these violent games may have a subconscious view that - if its in a game it must be ok..... these hideous games should be banned and its time that parents went back to being involved with what their kids are doing and say no to what is clearly unacceptable in a civilised society.

Lina

I think the games have a part to play in the killings we are experiencing these days. The kids have no sympathy what so ever.

Paula

Re:shoot em up games, you've got to wonder at how much parenting these kids are gettting? Are they being left for hours with these games? If so then thats why the children are so detached. If there is enough input from the parents then perhaps these games wouldnt affect them so much.

- And here are some more sensible comments:

M C

This is silly, it's already proven that there is no link between real life violence and virtual reality. What people don't understand is that these kind of games shouldn't be played by kids anyway, it's down to the parents decision to allow their kid to play them and to see the violence that happens in the game. It all comes down to parenting and the awareness that games come with an age rating just like movies do. If your kid is younger than the required age to play the game, then don't buy that game for them. Simples

Steven Sutcliffe

I simply can't believe how many supposedly educated people are willing to blame video games for every act of mindless violence these days. I'm sure some of these criminals have played video games at some point in their lives, few people under the age of 30 haven't, but if someone is capable of comitting these acts in the first place, simply playing a game isn't going to make them any more or less likely to do it. I imagine most of these people have watched tv, why don't we blame that? I think you need to stop looking for a quick and easy scapegoat, and face up to reality. That in the world today, there are too many thugs and mindless idiots who lack the intelligence and moral responsibility to live in society. Stop blaming video games, grow up and open your eyes.

david fairbank

been playing shooting games since i was 12yrs old im now 32 and still do every night 3-4hours. not once have i ever though i must go shoot some people. the people that do this might of watched rambo 4 forgod sake have you thought about that!

Tim Ingham

If Fading Powers was "dead right" (according to Wright), I'll eat my R2 trigger finger. Perhaps - just perhaps - factors other than old Ice-T records and 'Nintendos' play into the horrific gang violence seen in the papers this week. And while we're at it, a teenager did not "spray a machine gun" at any point in the story you're referring two. A pair of gang members, aged 21 and 22, have been convicted. If you're going to lazily tie video games to a tragedy to feed the rabid ignorance of your slovenly audience, at least get the most basic of facts correct. Muppet. And Anne! Oh, Anne. What in all of Skyrim were you talking about? Were you genuinely juxtaposing the cutesy idea of a young boy storing unwanted video games consoles under his bed with the image of him concealing a stash of machine guns? Why? Seriously though. Why? How could that image possibly help any one us understand this horrendous crime any better? Or were you suggesting - and the conversation surrounding your comment suggests this could actually, incredibly be true - that video games hardware inspired the idea of a weaponry hidey-hole? Who keeps 'Nintendos' under their bed anyway? Honestly, Anne, your Resi 4 review made more sense than this. Please, please, please... next time just say nothing. Zip. Nada. Because now and forever more, you're associating yourselves with some of the worst perpetrators of video games-related idiocy we've ever seen. You look foolish. And it isn't cool. And for those who perhaps believe we should just "let these insignificant idiots be", I hear you. But here's a quick fact: The Matthew Wright Show pulls in approximately 750,000 viewers a day. That's comparable to the entire number of gamers who bought Halo: Reach in the UK last year. It ain't right. And that means there's only one word for it.

- I thought those were interesting comments, they show a huge gap between the levels of expression from the regular viewers to those of the gaming community whom I fathom found their way to that particular show only due to the outrage of our community.

You can see some hilarious comments there, and watch the episode:

The Daily Mail is a scare-mongering Red Top rag, the Wright Stuff is a sad disgrace to British culture, why does this not surprise me :L
