Any other games like Jade Empire?

So I'm sitting here, finding myself really wanting to play a monk, but finding a distinct lack of video games that let me do that, that aren't some fighting game like MK or Tekken, or whatever. I loved Jade Empire, but it's kind of showing it's age a bit.

Anybody know of any decent games, semi-RPGish in their design, that allows for you to be a martial arts guy? Even if it's just a single combat option. Like how Dragon Age lets you do multiple styles of combat.

Not turned based if I can avoid it, I have Tyranny and I might dust that off if I can get the strength to play it. But more of a real time combat style, similar to the older Bioware titles, like the previously mentioned Jade Empire. Now it doesn't have to be a direct asian setting like JE, it could be some modern, cyberpunk setting or whatever, I just find myself really wanting to do some flying kicks and flips to punch my enemies, but in an RPG-esque style system.

Anyone got any suggestions? Preferably for PC.

Thanks.

The first Akiba's Trip is an Arpg about martial arts vampires fighting with a lot of anime references. If you're into the subculture you'll get the most out of it but it definitely fits the bill for a martial arts Arpg.

Another one would be Asura's Wrath but that's more super over the top gurren lagann style action than an rpg, it's more like playing an anime and the reason you'd play it is for the flashy over the top battles and action and story. Also the gameplay segments where you're not doing a huge setpiece fight where you punch planets in the face (literally) are pretty basic too.

Then we have Tales of Berseria where your protagonist is a martial artist with kick moves and a concealed sleeve blade like an assassin, there's other chars though like in any tales of game and not all of them are "monk" style characters, though there is this one fighter pirate who is more traditionally monk-ish (he punches out shockwaves from his fists and stomps the ground causing rocks to sprout up and whatnot).

Jade Empire is a pretty rare beast and I?ve been on the lookout for something similar myself to no avail.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The Shadowrun games let you play an adept that are melee fighters who use magic to enhance unarmed combat. Shadowrun Dragonfall and Hong Kong are also both super fantastic games also. They are a bit more turn based strategy though.

You're actually stating my pain. What needs to happen is that Bioware needs to sell Jade Empire to Platinum and/or CD Projekt Red along with a few of the writers who worked on the original Jade Empire.

We need a reboot, a sequel, or an hd remake.

That game is amazing and it's so frustrating that they are letting it languish.

Literally, your best bet in the foreseeable future is probably Cyberpunk 2077. I hate to say that because the game you want is the game I want.

Almost any game based off the D&D ruleset is likely to have "Monk" as one of the class options. It IS one of the classes in D&D itself, after all. It may not be quite what you're looking for, but there you go.

*reads description on steam* ...yeah I think I'll pass on that one xD

Yeah I'm actually familiar with this one, but keep forgetting to track it down and buy it.

Yeah I own those 2, not what I'm looking for. To clarify a bit, as I realize stating RPG usually implies turn based. I'd prefer something with real time combat, like how Jade Empire, and the Dragon Age games (basically all of Bioware's stuff now that I think about it), handle it. You level up and buy skills, and can occasionally pause to think about what to do, but when the fighting takes place, it's real time.

Yes, I am familiar, been playing D&D and various other table tops for decades. I'm specifically curious about video games though. Are you referring to the various D&D video games they've made over the years? I assumed those were turned based, isometric clickers.

I think you're out of luck. Another game like Jade Empire is desperately needed. In fact, a sequel is probably the only EA game that I'd be willing to buy, maybe.

I am, and of course, they vary. Neverwinter Nights for example, another Bioware game, has turn-based under the hood, but works live-action with a pause button so you wouldn't notice the turns going by. Same with NWN 2. Depends on where you look for things.

There's been more Chinese made Wuxia themed games floating around on steam, though I have no idea as to their quality or whether they have decent translations, if any at all. Considering Jade Empire is pretty much a western take on Wuxia, maybe you might find something that tickles your fancy. Though you should probably be prepared for low budget jankiness and dodgy translations if you take the plunge.

I feel Suikoden V kinda has a somewhat Chinese aesthetic to the nation you play, but it is a JRPG and you're not exactly going to play a monk.

Overgrowth. I'm afraid it doesn't have RPG elements, but it is a Wuxia influenced game. You play a rabbit who gets stuck in a conflict between the peaceful herbivores and violent carnivores. It's fun, but gets difficult pretty quick. This is the only suggestion I can attest for.

You may want to check out Bloody Spell and Enslaved: Odyssey of the West. Though I can't speak for those game, both are Wuxia influenced. This also goes to show why a game similar to the Witcher 3 but set in China would be amazing. Just saying.

True Crime series? Never played it but it's big draw was supposed to be Hong-Kong thriller in an open world with martial arts

Jade Empire is closely related to Knights of the Old Republic, but their melee combat is more light sabers than fisticuffs, which is precisely what you're looking for.

Maybe Diablo 3 would be a good fit? Far less story than Jade Empire, but the monk class is pretty fun to play.

If you don't mind stepping into other genres, there are games like Sleeping Dogs that have a lot of hand-to-hand combat.

It is Sleeping Dogs that is the spiritual successor of sorts to the True Crime series that is set in Hong Kong. The True Crime series itself has never had anything to do with HK. I think there's only two games in it, one set in NY and one set in LA.

Oh man, Akiba's Trip! The game about fighting vampires by forcefully stripping their clothes off in the street. I've never seen anybody else mention it on here before. I never played it myself but SGF's demo of it will always have a fond place in my heart alongside his demos of Pocket Master and Conception 2.

Sorry- I meant Hong Kong thriller as a style of on-screen martial arts, not as a playable location.
