Im going to have to get my laptop repaired and its going to be formatted as part of the repair process.

I have a saved GTA 4 file and when I get my laptop back I'm going to have to reinstall GTA 4 to the system.

Is there anyway I can save my game progress on a separate drive so that when i reinstall the game I dont have to start over?

You could always get an external hard drive. Mine is full of game and music that would fill up my laptop and then some.

Just back up a copy of it:

External HD, Floppy Disk, Zip Drive, CD-Rom, USB thumb drive, you got lots of options.

Just find the save file and do that.

Or heck even email it to yourself.

Would making a copy of the entire folder suffice?

When i reinstall the game how would I input the saved progress?

We really can't tell you step-by-step how to do it if we don't own the game ourselves, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Somewhere in the folder that you installed the game there should be a folder labeled "saves" or "profiles" or something like that; you'll want to back up that folder, and once you've got your computer back, you can re-install the game and put the folder you backed up back in the exact same place you found it.

If you can't find the folder, check in "my documents;" I seem to recall one of the earlier GTA games storing savegames in there.

Back it up on an external hard drive, or if the file isn't too big, a flash drive.
