I used to have hardcore self-esteem issues. Then I graduated High School and realized "Holy Crap, I do rock! I'm smart, fairly attractive, talented and I have naturally big boobs. I really have no reason to really hate myself. So what if I'm a borderline midget who is partially gimped? I still rock!"
Is that a picture of Viktoria in your avatar? Because if so, then yes. Yes you absolutely rock.
Yes, yes it is >D

Not just awesome, but so awesome. Points for Thief, points for the second best character in Thief. (Sorry, Garrett is just... I mean, he's Garrett. You know how it is.)

I don't think I'm awesome, but I know I'm good. It's taken me a while to get to this point having to go through the whole angsty teenager stage and self-esteem issues but when you are on the verge of competing at an international level in one of the most physically demanding and training intensive sports in the world then... well it's hard to say I suck.

I don't think I have high or low self esteem. I'm just me. I have traits that correspond with low self esteem, like shyness, but I don't have them because I think I suck, but then, there are those traits I -do- have because I worry that other people find me irritating and a burden to be around. I also have a pretty poor opinion of how I look. However, I also have traits that correspond with pretty high self esteem, such as my openness with others about myself, and I'm highly socially adept. Like all humans, I'm complex, and crude generalisations don't really work on me.

Sophisticated, classy generalisations totally do though.

Not crippling, I doubt myself at times but that is mostly so I don't look a fool when I say I can do something and fail.

Who's to say what is right?

Sometimes I think that people who don't have self-doubt...really should. If it's all that stops us from being cocky, tasteless, from throwing our weight around, and from being potentially politically dangerous...then bring on the doubt. A healthy amount of self-doubt is a bi-product of being genuinly thoughtful.

I'm fairly meek, I like that about myself...and if I was any other way...it wouldn't be genuine.

Angsty teen never happened to me. I had way more to worry about when I was in high school than feeling upset about what people thought or didn't think. And to be honest it made life a LOT easier to just not care. When I was 14 I figured having self esteem issues takes too much emotional effort. I just wanted to hang out and enjoy life as it is and that's still true.

(That being said, I don't look down on people who have problems with self esteem, I just personally don't get tangled up in that particular problem.)

Garrett is made of epicness and win. He's the most badass of the badasses =P

And you, you get awesome points for being the first one to ever recognize my avatar. Many, many awesome points to you.

And to, um, get this train of thought back on topic... people who call me awesome have led me to my inflated ego and lack of self-esteem issues. See my above conversation.

I't hard to describe my situation as far as self esteem goes. I don't really have an opinion on myself like "oh man I'm awesome" or some shit like that. I just sort of am, and I know what I can and can't do. If there's something that I can't do that I want to do, I just work towards it and achieve it. Though at the same time I view myself as a higher priority than everything else in existence combined, because naturally I view life through the perspective of me, therefor I am, at least from my standpoint, the most important human being that ever has or will exist.

So I don't know, I kind of have self awareness rather than self esteem I guess.

I am the ultimate Numero Uno. I am, quite simply, incredible. God asks me for advice. I built Barack Obama, invented Europe and thought up the concept design for Charizard.

I don't really know how awesome I am, but no one tells me I'm awesome, they all tell me I suck.

Therefore, I've concluded I must be average.

A really common occurrence I've noticed here on the Escapist is people complaining about how much they suck. Are self esteem issues something inherent amongst nerds/gamers, or do we just have an over-representation of angsty teens?
I'll vote for the latter.

Im a flaming nerd/gamer, and while I might be a fucking misnathrope too who hate mankind (which includes hating myself) I have a rather disproportionate amount of high regards for myself in comparison to others.

So apparently, nerds/gamers doesn't have to act like angsty teens with self-esteem problems. :)

While I recognize my many shortcomings, I still view myself as a vastly better human being than most of the people I see in real life, as well as being better than many people at many things. In the grand scheme of things, I'm not so great, but in small-scale terms, I'm freakin' awesome.

Nah, I'm happy with my life, life's good.

But yeah, whole lotta wangst on here. You either get used to it or leave I guess.
I think it's because of the high percentage of teenagers here. I think a recent poll put the amount of under 19 year olds well over 50%.

Still bloody annoying though.

Oh wow, I was sure that if I got a reply it'd be a flame!

Yeah, I think in almost every case it is a teen angst thing. I think that quote from the fifth Harry Potter book summed it up well (so sue me, nerd here!)

"You know, this is precisely why I loathed being a teacher! Young people are so infernally convinced that they are absolutely right about everything. Has it not occurred to you, my poor puffed-up popinjay that there might be an excellent reason why the headmaster of Hogwarts is not confiding every tiny detail of his plans to you? Have you never paused, while feeling hard-done-by, to note that following Dumbledore's orders has never yet lead you into harm? No. No, like all young people, you are quite sure that you alone feel and think, you alone recognise danger, you alone are the only one clever enough to realise what the Dark Lord may be planning..."
Oh lord, you just reminded me of the huge amount of wangst in that book, it was so sweet when he got put in his place like that.

I think Rowling broke her caps lock or something and just ran with it...

Never thought I'd say this, but epic Harry Potter reference:p

OT: I don't have any self esteem issues per se, but I know a lot of people who do. Its naturally quite common in gamers, and in the cult entertainment industry as a whole, as escapism and mastery of a competitive medium attracts those with self esteem issues like a moth to a napalm induced blaze.

"Harry, would you like some coffee and a round of toas-"
"YOU WEREN'T THERE! I HAVE SEEN THE FACE OF DEATH!!!"
Oh fucking hell, I laughed pretty hard at that. Well done sir!
