Anyone else realize that the Kinect is just a really advanced Eyetoy?

I'm not hating on Microsoft, I game on both Sony and 360 (I play Sony more because of the free online, i know the hack sucked but we gotta get through these thugs and Sony will be back with a vengeance and apologies) but it's just... Okay, the Eyetoy came into play around, what, 2005? I hink were still on Xbox at the time and the PS2 was just the shit. Than we get Eyetoy and they change the game by turning the player into a controller. Okay, yeah, there weren't many games and you could win just by holding you hand up to the camera lens, but it was still impressive. I'm not saying the Kinect is plagiarism(the Eyetoy has been reincarnated for PS3 I believe), I'm just saying that Eyetoy may have inspired Kinect. Eyetoy took your picture and recorded your movements in game, Kinect takes a scan of your body and the points of movement and interprets your moves on screen. Kinect is still an amazingly impressive device, life saving maybe or good for physical therapy, but it just seems like Eyetoy evolved, I dunno.

So do you have any recent gaming revelations you'd like to share and discuss.

Only ages ago ><.

I think a lot of gaming-sites did a bunch of articles about this too, actually.

Yeah.

But it actually works.

The Eyetoy worked about as well as the Xbox 360's Camera, which has a few failed attempts at Eyetoy type interaction, like Totemball. And by "worked", I mean failed miserably.

You know the saying...

"Originality is just unrecognized plagiarism."

Eyetoy, Kinect, what's the difference? They are almost the exact same thing in my book. Whether it's a full body scan or a camera, they follow the same principle, although, as you said, Kinect is more advanced. Speaking of my opinion on motion controls, however off topic it may be...

All opinions contained within the spoiler below are just that: Opinions. Whether you agree with them or not, I'd reeaaally rather I didn't get flamed over having them.
I'm iffy on the entire thing. I've been annoyed by the surge of motion controls, and I've been one of the ones saying that, with refinement (not just one console generation, but many, and until developers can use them with practicality), they'll be good.

Yeah. Funny thing is that doesn't the move use the eyetoy or something like it?

seriously though, it's more advanced then that. It's basically the same premise but the application is more sophisticated. If you don't believe me, look at a room with a Kinect running through Infared sensing lenses. The eyetoy certainly didn't do that.

Yeah, it's an eyetoy that works slightly better. I just wish devs would spend more time creating things i'll actually buy.

Calling the Kinect an advanced Eye Toy is like calling a MP3 player an advanced record player. Similar end results, but remarkably different execution making for an entirely different experience.

The eyetoy was not the first motion recognition, and I highly doubt it was the inspiration for natal. If you want inspiration, go read the mountains of science fiction. It was a natural progression in my belief.

Comparing the kinect to the eye toy is like comparing a Bugatti Veyron to a piece of cheese with wheels. And this is coming from someone who does not own an xbox nor kinect.

You might want to read up on the tech behind the kinect, and the tech behind the eye toy, there are some radical differences, and it's been 5 years, and this is an area where technology is rapidly improving.

i have sony ripoffed nintendo and microsoft ripoffed sony and now nintendo is making a god of war clone the circle is complete
Two things:

One: The God of War clone your thinking of is most likely Asura's Wrath and that's being produced by Capcom. So it's more Shinto hack-and-slash meaning combat can be more crazy and less logical.

Two: your icon scares the $&@# out of me, I'm sleeping lying down everynight from now on to protect my phallus and tie a pillow to my buns of steel to stop any attempts at my ass. Congratulations for instilling the fear that I can be raped, and by a woman.

There's a main difference. The eyetoy registered movements while the Kinect can register gestures. That's a massive difference.

Yeah, but that's like a new model's improvement over the prototype.

There is also the accessibility of the items. Kinect is open for all kinds of possibilities and it has been shown. It will possibly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108597-Kinect-Helps-Surgeons-Save-Valuable-Time] save [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108066-Kinect-Could-Someday-Save-Your-Life] lives [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108593-Kinect-Hack-Becomes-GPS-for-the-Blind].

I wouldn't say it's so much about what the Kinect may or may not have been built off of it's how it can be used and what it can be utilized to do.

eyetoy was a really low tech motion capture wasn't it? so by its self it was sort of a rip off so...kinect is a working version of a rip off that didn't work even on a cold day in hell.
