For those who have not read the seventh book, skip over.

ROLAND REMEMBERED AT THE END OF THE SEVENTH BOOK THE JOURNEY HE JUST WENT THROUGH. Hence the line "Somewhere up ahead was Walter and Walter would talk...". He knew of the Golgotha.

Why nobody ever gets that this is the ending to the seventh book is beyond me.
If that's true, then why
does he all of a sudden have the horn with him, when they make such a big point of him not having it earlier? The whole point of it seemed, at least to me, as if God was saying to him "Nice job, congratulations, but you forgot the horn. Start over, and try to get it right this time."

And as for the eighth book, I seriously hope it never comes to fruition. As much as I had problems with the current ending, sticking your head back in and saying "Oh, by the way, this happened too" would make it worse. The only way it would work is if it was either a prequel, or if it had nothing to do with Roland at all and followed someone else.

This means I'm going to need to actually finish the books I guess.
Don't. It's only going to depress you. It's really really bad, especially the last book.
When Stephen King made himself a character in the book I should've known he jumped the shark.
As long as you don't read to the very end (the part where he basically tells you to stop), the ending isn't that bad. Its just when you read the 'true' ending that it blows goats
Yeah, what load of crap was that? Any writer KNOWS that if you just put up with 2000 pages of text and there are only 5 left you aren't going to stop. You get curious. It's like the ability to censor the game "Brutal Legend"...just ain't gonna happen, dude.

It never works, really. For instance. Just last night I was with an attractive woman and after a few drinks she undressed and performed ..... stop reading now dear reader if you are weak at heart...

insulin injections on a puppy.
Exactly! I sat through all the books, got to the "end" (which was a pretty 'meh' ending to start with) and see "Stop, you don't want the real ending." I thought, it must be interesting, but after reading it, I really wish I had just stopped

The reason the majority of the people didn't like the ending is because they don't understand the true significance of it. Roland was very kill crazy and often cared more about reaching his destination than the lives of his katet.

He was supposed to turn back and go with Susan, forsake the Tower (as so many told him, Walter, the turtle, the deaths of his friends...) because the point of even going to the Tower was to basically make it there with them. Even then that was the goal the entire time. TO REACH THE TOWER. To stand in front of it and blow the horn, signaling the coming of the Eld. However, he didn't do that. He didn't have the horn, which would have reminded him of his dead friends, hence the Jericho Hill reference whenever Cuthbert drops it. The reason the horn is so important is because if he has it he will turn back after realizing he has accomplished his goal. Yet, his selfishness in forgetting his Ka Tet is what dooms him. He chooses his obsession and goal over his friends.

He could have simply walked back to Patrick and chose to go to Susannah. He would have lived out the rest of his life until death happy, but chose to walk to the Tower. He chose to continue his death, which is an endless cycle of reincarnation. Each and every time he walks from the desert to the tower he comes across a "twinner" of his Ka Tet.

But nonetheless, the horn shows that the next time he reaches the Tower he will complete the journey without going in.

And that is the meaning in a nutshell.

Holy shit, there's an eighth?!

Yeah..... I don't know how to feel about that. Even though the ending in the 7th book wasn't what I expected, it felt finished.

I loved the books, but if they massacre it, then I'll murder them all.

I think Clint Eastwood would make a good Eldred Jonas or Father Callahan.

That would be brilliant! But... god he's really getting up there in years, they's have to do it soon.

YAY for the first four books.
BOO for the last three.

Though I imagine the finale to be changed, since the ending to the book series was absolutely horrible.
I absolutely agree! The last two were ok but the fifth was horrible! I don't know about changing the ending to much...
