Sorry boys, but that won't fly. Otherwise, you can't re-live (or view for the first time) timeless moments in music like this...

That's right. I invoke Freddie Mercury as an argument for why this won't work. And back it up with the Neil Gaiman defense.

Y'know, all they'd have to do is figure out how to shut off the infrared receiver.

I don't like this patent personally. I like to film the concerts I go to for my own uses and so I can go back and watch it again some other time. That's not illegal, or at least I don't think it is. I would be pissed if they prohibited us from doing that just because some people might try to pirate it.
It is against US civil law to "record" copyrighted "performances", but it is up to the Artist/Copyright holders to enforce their own copyrights.
Well I'm not an american so phew :p does that apply to concerts though or is that for like re-recording movies/CD's (cue image of FBI warning on every VHS/DVD ever) how can a concert be copyrighted? And also why is it a big deal if I have no intent to use it for pirating or selling, but just for my own personal use (and of such bad quality that nobody would buy it even if I tried)

I've been to some concerts though where the security guy at the front gate checks me and sees I have a camera with me and they didn't care.

On the other hand I've also been to a Green Day concert where a security guy came to me in my seat and said that someone had reported me for filming and told me to stop or they would take my camera away... (...and the guy one row below me kept filming for the rest of the concert without being told a thing) Seriously who reports people for that? I don't think I was being invasive or disrupting to anyone ( I was in the seating portion of an arena, like an ampitheatre and was holding the camera close to me)

I had to call my lawyer friend for some clarification, it not so much the performance as the music and lyrics are copyrighted. It doesn't matter who preforms them, so if someone is video taping a 5-year-old singing Lady Gaga, that video is still infringement. It is all about monetary loss for the Artist/Copyright owner, so if your only using it for personal use, then chances are they don't even care because your infringement is not causing them to lose a bunch of money.
If your out there posting the concert to everybody on the web, then it may be causing them to lose money. If your posting a clip on a website, they may look at infringement as free advertisement, that why it is up to the Artist\Holder to enforce their copyrights.

I always tell people to get permission if you want to use other Intellectual Property, most of the time, the Artist/Holder don't even mind, and if they say no, then respect that.

The music industry is fairly relaxed when it comes to enforcement on Live Performances I've noticed.

Also I wanted to point out there is such thing as the Berne Convention. Meaning copyright laws are enforceable in almost every country, most of the time.

Uh, by patenting it, Apple are stopping other companies from employing the same technology on their own devices. That technology would only work in theory if it was applied to every single recording device, including the much more suitable ones that aren't iPhones. By the mere act of patenting it, they've killed it stone dead. What an efficient use of their money and resources. [/sarcasm]

Wow! What amazing and revolutionary technology! I hope for Apple's sake no consumer realises that all they would have to do to bypass such a restriction is to not use an iPhone.
Don't be so ridiculous, Apple's marketing department is run by hypnotoad himself!
We are all doomed. We should just submit and be done with it.

Anyone who endorses this is completely stupid. You simply should not allow a company to have control over your device after you have purchased it. I was due for an upgrade, and my buddy suggested an iPhone, and I said that I didn't want to financially endorse Apple for anything. He thought I was stupid.... but I guess I win. If you buy a device that does this, you are telling them it's ok to keep doing things like this. I don't know if that makes too much sense for the anti-piracy crowd, but that is just how it is.

Also, given a very short amount of time, this feature will be shut down by pirates anyway. So, it's completely pointless. And telling everyone how big of an asshole they plan on being doesn't really help their public image.

Um, do not support. Do not support at all. If I want to take pictures at a concert, I damn well should be able to. And Apple needs to stop trying to control what I do with MY STUFF.

The only real place I could see these being of usefull-ness is just in the movie theaters and maybe cutting down on crappy shaky youtube clips of concerts.

Thankfully by patenting it this will keep other companies from using it on their devices as well, just Apple products but I could be wrong there. D:

Edit: And I'm damn sure someone will crack this in a matter of days or hours when it comes out and even worse might abuse it...

Woo, go apple! You tell those dirty people who want to record part of a performance that they're evil!

Wait, hang on, I have a 20 second clip of slash playing because in all likelyhood i'll never see that again and I like to relive it. Am I a pirate now? :O

So, how many cracks have been developed already? I'm guessing 73.

Hmm, now we just gotta wait for a case where someone was raped or murdered, and any possible video or audio evidence that would have been present at said concert or theater will now be gone. Thanks apple.

I'm all for trying to keep down piracy, but this is a bit... ludicrous per-say?

I'm really glad Apple have patented this, it'll prevent it from being included in my beloved Android phones.

It's a pretty evil idea, though. If I buy a tekn technolig gadget, it should do what I tell it to. If I choose to pirate something, that should be my choice, and up to me to deal with the consequences. Perhaps in the particular situation I'm in at the time it might not be piracy? My device should not be able to prevent me from using one of it's functions just because I might be using it in a "naughty" way. This is the same kind of reasoning as to why I refuse to buy an i-anything. No iPod, no iPad, no iPhone, not ever. Apple try too hard to control the user experience. They are the antithesis of how I prefer to use technology.

Depending on the strength of the signal, covering it might not work as well as you think it would.

time to go back to these:

I'm totally down for less d-bags holding up phones at shows, but this wont stop traditional cameras (unless they implement a similar thing).
With a strong enough IR signal, you could blow those up, just like every other recording camera system.

I'm not allowed to mention exactly what it takes to build a system strong enough to destroy one(it's pretty cheap if you know what to look for). It's not much cheaper to build a system that will disable one, temporarily.
