Apple Warns Owners About Worms

Is Apple backing down on its claim that Macs don't catch viruses?

We've all seen those Mac vs. PC commercials that imply Macs don't fall victim to viruses [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GQb_Q8WRL_g&feature=related], but an item posted on Apple's support website on November 21st entitled "MAC OS: Antivirus utilities" encouraged Mac users to have multiple virus checkers running simultaneously.

David Marcus, of virus protection software publisher McAfee, has said "Apple is just realizing that malware these days is targeting data, and valuable data exists just as much on an OS platform that is a Mac as it does on an OS platform that is Windows."

Given Apple's suggestion that you should have multiple anti-virus applications running, it's worth noting that there are very few free anti-virus programs around; Clamxav [http://www.clamxav.com/] is the only one I could find. That leaves the three pay-for checkers: Intego, McAfee and Norton.

Forums have already been raging with the Glorious PC Master Race crashing down on the 300 Mac-Spartans, but it's not devolved into madness yet.

Perhaps this one is more appropriate now? [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m5COVDP5IkQ&feature=related]

It is simple math. Market share = Number of viruses. All that bad mouthing apple did about windows getting viruses caused their sales to go up and now they are losing their advantage.

I thought they didn't catch viruses because not enough people had them to make it worthwhile making one. I guess that's changed.

Not really the issue at hand here, but AVG is another free anti-virus program.

I use to think "meh some people like Macs better than PC's" but after the apple's god awful bashing of the PC I've come to hate them more an more. It was funny at first but now it's just ridiculous and childish. Whoever is behind they're advertising should feel ashamed of themselves.

They deserve every criticism they get, because after all they're perfect, right?

That's exactly what is going on. So few people owned Macs compared to PCs that hackers and such just didn't bother with them. Apple jumped on this and championed it as an accomplishment (even though they didn't really do anything). Now that there are enough Macs out there, the hackers have set their eyes on them.

Ah, I love irony...

So Apple viruses are proportional to their market share? That's funny.

Ahahahah. Please don't mention that pile of pigeon hell near me. :)
Wait, why do you hate it?
Norton is a fuck of a lot worse.

Time to complete a system scan with AVG : 9 hours.
Time to complete a system scan with Norton : 6 hours
Time to complete a system scan with Avira : 2 hours

There are more reasons, but that's a stickler.

It only takes my AVG 1 hour to complete it's scan, and norton could never find shit, and every system that had it ended up dying a horrible death.
Also, don't make a reference to a meme that's been slaughtered by fucking idiots, it only brings back painful memories for everyone involved.

unfortunately the journalists got sloppy in their reporting. this is an old article that was simply updated with new anti-virus software suggestions.

gizmodo has the story.

Interesting reading, but I don't think it negates anything I've said. I'll keep looking at this battle to see how it rages. Thanks for the update.

Time to uninstall AVG when you don't want it any more: 5 mins
Time to uninstall Norton when you don't want it any more: Eternity
