Archie Will Die Taking A Bullet Meant For Gay Friend

Are you sufficiently shocked into buying the penultimate issue of Life With Archie?

As circulation-generating stunts go, this one is pretty ballsy. We've known since April that Archie comics plans to end the revival of Life With Archie with the death of the main character. And now we know how. It was revealed late last week that Archie Andrews will die in issue #36, taking a bullet intended for Kevin Keller, Archie Comics' first openly gay character.

During its original run from 1958 to 1991, Life With Archie was an anthology series of sorts, featuring the Archie gang in various adventures ranging from amateur crime-fighting to treasure hunting, with occasional forays into alternate universes where the kids were super heroes or secret agents. The series was revived in 2010, this time with continuing from the five part parallel storyline Archie Marries Veronica/Archie Marries Betty series, in which, well, you can guess. This version of Life With Archie often deals with real world sociopolitical issues, and focuses on the adult incarnations of the Archie gang, and features two separate storylines branching from both of his possible marriages.

In the revived series, Kevin Keller is a military vet and politician who becomes an advocate for gun control after his husband is involved in a shooting. While the publisher hasn't revealed the identity of the shooter nor whether or not Kevin's political views will play into the story, it is confirmed that the shooter is "a stalker," and that Archie will die the same way in both the Betty and Veronica storylines. His death(s) will occur in the second-to last issue, with the final issue devoted to the aftermath.

"The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie," Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in a press statement. "He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It's what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years."

Issue #36 will be released on July 23. We'll soon find out whether or not the story is any good, but until then, let's pay early tribute to Archie's sacrifice with the help of our good friend, Jon Bon Jovi:

Will his gay friend swear to prevent such incidents happening again, don some lycra, y fronts and a cape and become a new superhero, as well as becoming inexplicably at peak physical and mental condition and inherits 3 billion off his late uncle?

If not, no sale.

I considered it, but I opted not to mark this as having spoilers because the information contained in this article is from the marketing materials for the issue in question. The company itself is revealing the information prior to publication.

Plus it's on the cover of the issue. It's not like this is going to be a huge twist for the reader.

While I'm okay with the art style, I never really got into Archie, as it was kind of before my time. I have gotten into some similar webcomic strips (some of which are NSFW, so no links here) by some guys who did work on the more recent comics, but I never really made the jump.

It will probably be a dream thing and it will undermine its own story. Either that, or they will go all-in with this and it will be one big twist.

I was under the impression that Archie was a fun goofy comic about the idealistic domestic life of the 60s (Though as the recent gay marriage comic showed, thankfully without the 60s politics). This is...pretty fucking dark. I mean I'm half certain that they're gonna do what Family Guy did (As do all comics) and bring him back to life in a few issues, taking a fair amount of edge away from the tragedy, but if they stick to their guns and make his death stick then...fuck.

Well, this is from the final two issues of a series that runs separately from the main Archie comics, from what I can tell. Archie isn't getting killed off for good, they're just using this as a way to end the series with a bang (not a pun, I promise).

Unless they plan to bring this series back (which I doubt), I highly doubt this is getting retconned. Even if it IS brought back, they can always make it a pre/midquel set before his death, so... No need to do it then, either.

I don't really know much about Archie, so... Take my opinion with a pinch of salt, I guess. What can I say, it's not really that big here in the UK (for obvious reasons).

I caught this article on MSN.com earlier today. The comment section was glorious.

"Rabble rabble rabbe! Leftist, Socialist, Pervert, Liberals are assassinating your good God fearing country! Thanks Obama! Hurf durf durf!"

I'm paraphrasing of course...but not by much.

In the land of comic book marketing, the only way to avoid spoilers is to never read a single preview, news article, cover, or advertisement.

Publishers have a lovely habit of spoiling everything they do before it happens to get people to buy their shit.

All is not lost! Now that it's made public that this is going to happen, Archie can try to avoid it! Good luck, Mr Andrews! Our hearts are with you!

Well the message is clear, being friends with those "gays" will get you killed. Tell your children folks.

(and because it needs to be said apparently the above is in no way serious, merely how it aligns that soon after in comic terms of making a gay friend he gets shot due to that gay friend).

Also how did Archie block such a shot, he got that super speed? Not to mention if the killer was aiming at Keller who is presumably behind Archie than...the killer was aiming at Keller's crotch?

Well, the thing is that it is not the Archie who is killed. It is actually Alternate-Future Archie. Apparently, the Archie comics has multiple timelines now.

Life with Archie is coming to an end, so Archie will stay dead. However, only in this continuity. He'll still be alive as a teenager and presumably, will eventually have a different adult life written for him.

Well I agree with what Blachman says above... this is off the wall crazy.

Yea to be honest... Bob's phrase of 'comics are weird' ain't enough for this! Archie was a simple little story about a fun gentle lad and his friends. Now its got multible time lines self sacrificing death. What next for god's sake, I guess comics are a tough industry but dear lord, when are they doing Age of Archie, Archpoint, world war Archie and The house of Archie. Just seems a little over dramatic but hey its only comics I guess.

But this all makes me a little sad I haven't kept up with that Archie fellow in recent years but I guess thats the nature of time and relivence, not everythnig stays with us forever RIP Archie i'm sure you'll rise again and it'll be fun and health entertainment.
