I don't know, when I see an "anime monster girl" I find it to be really disappointing since most of the time its basically a cute generic girl with bestial ears or horns. Thoughts

Well, you know... it needs to be fuckable enough for the geeks. Can't be that when the majority of it isn't cute, generic girl.

What, you prefered it to be like an actual monster/ beast/ animal upper body but with sexy anime girl legs or something?

Not much to add, really.

Sometimes they go a little bit farther, giving them harpy legs and arms, or a horse lower body, but in general...

Pretty much yeah. For some reason its really common for a 'monster' race to have monstrous looking males then generic human hottie with different ears women.

It really depends. There's some shows that go for a typical "stereotype of monster girl" style design which is intentionally samey to let you derive personality traits from the design. Then there's some more out-there elements like Saya from Saya no Uta which is a monster girl but not in the stereotypical sense at all.

Ultimately, you can find variety, you just have to actually look for it and not expect it to land in your lap.

Hmm, actually now that I think about it we tend to do this in the west too. While we are more willing to have more monsterous females they still tend to err on the side of more human hottie than the monsterous 'badass' males. (see warcraft and to a lesser extend starcraft) Or we just forget about the females all together. Like the warhammer universe used to have female orks but it got too complicated for them so they just made orks a fungus. We even saw this in guild wars, in the first one the only charr you saw were males, although they remedied that in the second game where the charr males more monsterous and the females are more bestial.

I just want more lamias. Putting ears on someone then going for the "monster in human society" drama is bullshit.

The titillation must not be compromised. It is the underlying MSG (huh, quwinky dink?) that entices those hormones to drop ze cash. Without hormonal hooks to earn the monies, the work might start to resemble a risky venture. Dare I say "a flop."

Monster Musume has some pretty good variety and there's a surprising amount of detail invested into how they live/get on in life.

And tits.

But, yeah, lots of cute girl bits attached to those monstery bits.

Kind of the point, really.

I don't mind some 'monstrous' characters that share or parallel human attractiveness, but sometimes I do find it tedious. Reptilian female characters (that is to say, reptilians that have no human DNA) should probably not have breasts, as an example, but context as always is king.

I also like it when monstrous races have distinguishing features that have nothing to do with our own sense of gender or sexual dimorphism, like males with frills, colored wattles or additional limbs, or females that have wings but males do not, or the female is roughly humanoid/insectoid but the males are like a cloud of really small individuals, etc.

I'm in a sci-fi pathfinder game at the moment that has several new races, and one of these aliens has four distinctly different sexes, and that's all we know at the moment in-game... makes for fascinating stuff, especially as we may end up as ambassadors to their colonies. We'll have to learn about their cultural make-up, how each of the sexes is treated formally, traditional roles they play and how they each are perceived in relation to them, acceptable communications, ceremonies, rituals...

I think, outside of fanservice, that the largely generic design we see for monstergirls is because of the desire to have the audience be able to connect with the characters. The farther you go from a typical cute/sexy girl design toward a more bestial appearance, the harder it would be to connect to the character. Admittedly, it can be done, and moreover done correctly; it's just not commonplace.

TBH I want to see something like beauty and the beast, but the beast is a princess and looks mostly the same when in beast form
Found this for you, Undeadsuitor:

Cause anime monster girls are either for porn or fanservicey types of stuff.

Thus they are usually just regular girls with some additional bits stuck on, and maybe a skin colour change.

We could extend this to sci fi alien women and fantasy races and shit. Things could evolve into all sorts of things but we end up with all vaguely human looking things with pointy ears or green/blue skin. And maybe tentacles instead of hair.

I think they could stand some more variety, yeah.

I don't see how making them a bit more alien or beastly all of a sudden means we can't relate to them. There's more to being relatable than just looking human. The dragons lately in WoW are being massacred left and right and there are a fair amount of people upset about that fact. Dragons don't look in the least bit human but in that universe they are a proud, intelligent, mostly neutral or benevolent race and that's enough to get people very emotionally invested in their story.

Not to mention, a lot of modern anime in general suffers from "same face syndrome" so that only compounds the issue. If you were to take away the monster parts that distinguish them from each other, there wouldn't be much left to tell them apart.

Yeah it's pretty lame how like merle from escaflowne is the most animal-esque "catgirl" gets.
Fur is like woah, super edgy and rare, good luck finding that and changing facial features to be less generic animeperson is unicorn levels of rarity.

Japan completely half-asses their "anthros". Bloody weebs.
