Are there any console emulators that can play Music CD images? (and a Dreamcast CMOS sidenote).

So after moving last year I've finally gotten around to getting my old consoles up and running.

One of the things I am rediscovering is my love of the audioCD player of my Sega Saturn, it is really quite awesome.

So the idea of using an emulator to play audio CD images on the go appealed to me but it seems an impossible goal. Windows based emulators don't recognise images and the Android ones I have tried just crash.

I understand the point of emulators is to keep the games alive but I'd love if at some point the full functionality of the console could be used.

Also I found that the CMOS battery of my Saturn had died, it was a simple thing to replace. Just open a hatch on the back and pop in a new battery. I've discovered though that replacing the one for my Dreamcast is just a little more problematic.

To replace my Dreamcast CMOS battery I have to open the entire console and break out my soldering iron. Now I didn't have the steadiest of hands before I didn't overindulge in alcohol, these days the endeavour is way beyond my skill level.

Can't you just...put the cd in your computer? Or are you one of those people that doesn't have one any more because 'it's not needed any more anyway'? (which, if that's the case, guess you just proved yourself wrong? :p)

As for using an image, I would think using daemon tools to make it appear as a CD would do the trick, but I could be wrong...

I can put the discs in my computer (I still have my DVD drive), my DVD player, my blu-ray player, my Xbox One, my Xbox 360, the actual console itself.

As I said though I can't get an emulator to recognise an audioCD image (or the actual physical disc).

I just really like the Saturn's CD player and would love to be able to use it when my Saturn is not available to me, I have a lot of courses coming up I have to attend for work and seeing that spaceship flying with some of my favourite tunes would be awesome while stuck in a hotel room.

I really don't get the point of wanting to play a CD via an emulator. Whether you're on a PC or mobile device, there are far better programs that play audio with better quality than any emulator could. Plus, the emulator would be using more resources thus more battery if on a mobile device.

Well the point is that I think it would be a cool option, does there really need to be more of a reason than that?

Battery life is hardly an issue, it isn't as if we are ever far away from a plug socket these days and portable chargers can easily be slipped into your pocket along with your phone.

A somewhat update.

SSF it turns out will play real CDs but whatever I am doing when ripping images and then using Daemon Tools to mount them, stops the emulator from playing them.

I do have an old portable drive I could take with me but the image experimentation continues.

Can you play the mounted disks in VLC or Windows Media Player?
