When I say spy game, I'm not talking about a shooter with gadgets and stealth mechanics i.e. Splinter Cell is NOT a spy game. GoldenEye is NOT a spy game. The closest I've ever played to a true spy game is Thief and Hitman (up until he starts shooting). Are there any games that are about blending into crowds, dealing with different objectives at the same time and infiltrating buildings, not by shooting the guards, but by either grabbing a clipboard and claiming to be a building inspector or by crawling through the air ducts? I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any shooting, but the killing should be less shooting and more 'oh god someone's coming where do I hide the body?'

I'm tired of games that slap a stealth mechanic on a shooter and claim that it's a Spy game. Are there ANY true spy games?

I don't know of any, unfortunately. The trailer for Watch Dogs seems to be approaching this type of game, but it devolves into cover-based shooting at the end.

Mission impossible , is the only spy game i can think of . Unfortunately it's a ps1 game and aged TERRIBLY . It was a game based on the first movie , and honestly it wasn't bad for a game based on a movie , if you have the mental willpower to play a game that dated you should give it a try .

There's Spy Party.. though that's not really a full on game and is more of a multiplayer competttion similar to a fighting game.. and it's not out yet either.

What you're describing doesn't sound any closer to a true spy experience than Quake does to be honest. If you want something with a bit more of the movie spy feel there's Spycraft: The Great Game. (Yes it is actually called that.)

Alpha Protocol seems like exactly what you're asking for. Technically, you don't have to play the game as a spy, since it's an RPG, but if you focus your stats on sneaking and infiltration, and make a point of trying to talk, sneak, or hack your way past every obstacle, it can play like a true spy game. At any rate, any game where just talking to someone is more nerve-wracking than any shoot-out is clearly doing something interesting enough to look into.

Nope, you all have it wrong.

This man wants Death to Spies.

Really, it's the closest thing to a true stealth game I have ever played.

Not perfect, but the closest.

Pretty much this, yes. Note that "espionage" isn't always just infiltration and putting up the friendly face in real life, things do get iffy sometimes.

But yeah, you can play AP quite like that, finish your objectives without anyone even knowing you were there, etc.

Sounds like you should play assassins creed. Also I would recommend Escape from Butcher Bay and the Metal Gear Series.

All well and good, but the games you describe as spy games are - by their own titles - about stealing things for profit and contract killing. Spying, one figures you mean for intel, information, files, etc. You could push that to the Hitman and Thief point, but they're not spies themselves.

There's that game that I developed in my head, but.. Its not brown, cover based, realistic, or modern military. So its not getting made.

Stealth games don't exist anymore and if Thief 4 is a true stealth game I will commit ritual seppuku with a SNES controller. (I.E: Its not gonna happen)

You can play Deus Ex: Human Revolution via stealth, finding alternative routes, hacking, and persuasion. It may not fit your bill perfectly, but I think it does a pretty nice job.

Did you not read 'the closest I've ever played to a spy game'. They aren't real spy games, but they capture the feeling more than Splinter Cell or GoldenEye.

I kinda want to see that. It would be an interesting spectacle to say the least.

Edit before ban: Also, spying isn't actually interesting. It's incredibly boring. It's not just like paperwork, but IS paperwork. We've simply allowed ourselves to believe that James Bond is a series about a spy, and not just "British bastard fucks foreign chicks and then kills them"
Here's the thing. I want that. Not the paperwork, but keeping up a facade as I try to inch closer to the secrets I seek. Walking into a building with nothing but my false identity. Having to avoid some, blend with others, and holding my breath whenever someone suspects me. The idea that IF my disguise fails, I'm doomed. It's the tension that I want.
