Over the years I've noticed a distinct trend that most people agree main Final Fantasy games, 1 through 7 are fantastic. while the 10th through 13 are utter bullsh*t. what I've been determining all this while is whether or not games 8 and 9 are bad.

so I ask you wise men (and pubescents) of The Escapist: while Final Fantasy 1-7 are great, and 10-13 are fucktarded, but is 8 and 9 bad?

Inb4 non-stop comments on how FF games are all shit

OT: Yes OP, I would say Final Fantasy 8 and 9 are fairly good in their regard. Although that's subjective to how you perceive the franchise as a whole.

God. It's impossible to say.

The FF fanbase is fractured on EVERY. SINGLE. GAME.

Just try 'em.

Final Fantasy II exists, your logic is flawed.

8 was okay, I'll admit. The plot revolved too much around romance between Squall and Rinoa than saving the world, and the gameplay was outright broken. But it did Triple Triad really good, and that basically made the game for me.

Can't say anything about IX, never played it.

there are many different opinions on all of the final fantasy games, espetialy 8 and 9, for me they were more of a transition point from the good old days to now not awful but not great. only my opinion so please dont flame me :p

I have not yet played VIII or IX, unfortunately, but I can say that X and XIII are most definitely not terrible. Especially X. People only hate on X because it was the first to have voice acting, so the quality was to be expected from the first in a series to do that. Not terrible, just not that great (and admittedly pretty bad at times). But X is one of the most emotional, character-driven stories of the series. XIII, people just hate 'cause it's different. The people who hate XIII either hate it because they hate Final Fantasy in general or because the thing they loved about the series was the open-ended nature; if you don't fall into either of those two groups, it's actually really good.

Just had to throw that out there. Now leaving to play VIII...

I've only ever played VII through to X-2 and 12. I didn't like X-2 or 12, I hated the art style of IX and the voice acting of X. That's all I can really say.

8 is total shit, 9 is a hankering back to the NES/SNES days and is widely regarded as one of the best.

8 had terrible broken gameplay that was mostly unintuitive and full of needless grind and busywork. Characters sucked, villain terrible, story made no sense, ect...

I could write an essay completely deconstructing 8 and explain how terrible it is and how much it fails on a story telling level it aint even funny. Although that would take more time than I'm willing to invest in it right now, maybe some other day. Avoid it, it's not worth your time.

2 wasn't as bad as so many make it out to be, hell at least it had a comprehensible story. The gameplay was broken if you abused it, but they fixed it in later iterations. I managed to beat the NES version without ever breaking the game and had fun with the challenge.

I'm quite fond of Final Fantasy 6 for SNES, maybe you should go for that one

(Final Fantasy 6 WAS the western one for SNES, right? I lost track)

8 is good, but it takes some serious getting used to the fucking draw and GF system. Meanwhile 9, while being more childish than 7 or 8 was really good and I had a lot of fun with it. Thankfully 9 has a more simple custimozation system than 8. If you have played 6, then 9's ability system will make you feel right at home.

8 had a robotic jellyfish and a train from space. How is that not awesome?

Prety much what I was going to say. Its always something like "The series got shit at 10" "no 7 ruined it" "everything after 10 is bollocks" "youre all idiots, 6 was the best, and everything after that is utter rubbish".

Theyre all wrong though, the series died with 13.

You can suplex a demonic train in 6, your argument is invalid.

See? I love 13. Think it's the series BEST.

So, you really can't come to any consensus on FF anywhere.

The easiest way to figure out, go pick a number between 1-13 and look up the corresponding Final Fantasy, if you don't care for any of 1-6, move on to 8-13, and vice versa, can't decide, pick 7, EVERYONE likes that one (for good justifiable reason) generally speaking.

IM not a fan of 8-9 but I can say both do have there good parts and bad parts.

8 was an attempt to make another great game after 7 but in some spots failed but in others made it into its own.

9 was a try to old school losing alot of the tech in the game but it just made everything kiddyish.

and in both i can recommend to stay the hell away from the card games. Some say that they can help and they kinda do but having to spend way to much time on them to get special shit is just not worth.

I can and probably many other can go deeper into each game but just try them out for yourself and give them at least 3-4 hours or if your daring to the end of the first disc on each. If you like them keep playing if not and you didnt like it you wont miss anything you didnt want to begin with.
