So i came home the other day and i saw my little sister watching the Disney channel show "Jessie". After watching it i was appalled by some of the jokes being made. the first of which was a joke about Indian people in the tech support industry.one of the characters, a young boy adopted from India, started telling his adopted brother, an american, about India.

1st child: "did you know that India has a population of nearly 1 billion?"
2nd child: "oh yeah, i think i talked to all of them when my computer went down." followed by a laugh track.

The second is when two girls make jokes about bra stuffing:
older girl: "look my new leopard beat magazine! they have an article on bra stuffing, "socks or napkins?"!
jessie: "the answer is neither.......its two ply toilet paper"again, followed by a laugh track.

I dont feel like these kind of jokes are appropriate for young children but maybe its just me. what do you guys think?

The first one seems to me like mere exaggeration and nothing to be upset about. The second one...I do not understand.

I require some assistance.

Ply means the thickness of the toilet paper. I was annoyed by the second joke because i don't think shows should be giving bra stuffing tips to 6 year olds.

I don't really see the problem. On number one, it's hardly racist to rag on the fact that most tech support people these days seem to be based in the Indian sub-continent, it's not making a negative judgement on those people. On number two, it's just a joke about a common item of clothing most women wear, I don't really see how that's inappropriate either. Give children some credit, they aren't delicate little flowers who'll be scarred for life by two slightly edgy jokes, I'm sure most hear much worse on the school playground, or from their own parents.

6-year-olds? That was unexpected. It does seem a tad concerning that they'd be talking about that sort of thing at that age. Then again, don't they have those strange shows in the US where they dress up children and parade them around in front of...well, I'm not sure I want to think about what sort of people are sitting in the front row of those shows.

Personally, it doesn't worry me. It seems like a bit of a mature joke for kids of their age, but then I recall some of the cartoons I used to watch having mature themes and episodes (some of which were later removed) and they had a minimal effect on me.

I've never watched Jessie, but are you sure its intended audience is 6 year olds? From what I understand, the Disney Channel also produces shows for pre-teens and teenagers, and those jokes sound more like the sort of thing that might be intended for that age range. Not that I think there's anything wrong with them particularly, I just don't see how a 6 year old would "get" them. The bra-stuffing thing in particular sounds like something that would be aimed at slightly older girls - trust me, it's something pretty much every young girl thinks about at some point.

I wouldnt say these are inappropriate perhaps just a bit mature for a young child. Im pretty sure that a 6 year old has never had to renew their car insurance and been put through to an indian call centre. Bra stuffing is a bit old for a six year old too, I wouldnt say its harmful to watch it but again like the indian joke its a bit mature for their understanding

This is why films like shrek are so successful. On the surface its a light-hearted child's fairy tale but as an adult the dialogue and pop-culture references are hilarious and you'll notice when you watch it with kids some of the adult humour is just beyond their understanding

Okay for one thing, my little sisters watch Jessie and believe me the show is not intended for 6 year olds. They're 10 and I'd say 9-12 is the age group for that particular show. Most of those jokes will go over the heads of anyone younger than 8 anyway. So I don't see the problem.

The only thing appalling about these jokes is how fucking trite and stupid they are; no wonder there's a laugh track - no normal human being would laugh at them.

I agree with the other posts questioning the age they're aiming at, although I will say they have a channel for younger kids, Disney Junior, and the age range aimed there tops out at 5 or 6, so things on the Disney channel (that show or other things) might be getting pretty young kids to watch.

Have you met, well, kids? I have an eleven-year-old sister and I'm surprised almost weekly at the banality and stupidity of things that she'll laugh at. Also a few months ago I heard the theme song from a cartoon I really liked when I was little, and then not long after I heard another one from another cartoon (I'm not sure what they were, but one of them was Street Sharks). Those were sobering experiences, because the lyrics were dumb as all get-out and I can remember singing my little heart to 'em. At least the Power Rangers theme hardly has any words.
also what's this new guideline, we can't say anything nice about ad-blockers? what kind of repressive, denial-laden 6!0(|< is that? eh, I guess they're telling people about them just by having that, there's that at least

They aren't appropriate at all for any age. Those are the shittiest jokes I've heard all year, and I listen to a radio segment known as Bad Joke Friday.

The bra stuffing seems a bit off for a Disney channel show I'll admit. But the kids on that, at least some of them, are at that age where they start to talk about that stuff, so okay I guess? I don't know. The India joke though, that's hardly surprising (and I find it rather funny because when stuff goes wrong at my work, I dread calling tech support for that very reason). From what I've seen of the show, that kid is always having to suffer little cracks at his heritage like that, and he fires right back with his own jokes.

But then, look at what was funny years ago: Bugs Bunny is trying to perform a song on a piano and a man in the audience keeps coughing. Bugs glares at him, but then after the third time the guy coughs, Bugs pulls out a gun and shoots him. I thought that was hilarious when I was a kid, but now I go, "Holy crap, is that okay?" There will always be jokes that make you wonder if you should be letting your child watch the show.

To be fair most of that stuff is going to soar right over most of these kids heads. Hell, that's why they put it in there, so that anyone old enough to understand what they're talking about can get a laugh every now and then.

Ok , rule of thumb with jokes for kids.. No, if you think it might be inappropriate it is, at least to some one.

I overstepped the mark one day making a joke with one of the kids I teach, it wasn't all that bad i thought. I was wrong and then I was fired. The parents were very VERY uptight about it but I do have a better appreciation for how far you should not go.

TV however oversteps the boundary all the time, Few people care and if they do their kids wont be allowed to watch. Besides Disney shows nowadays are all crap so bad semi mature jokes arent really that surprising.

Well, let's break this down, shall we?

This show is rated TV-G, which in certain cases is actually a HIGHER rating than your typical TV-Y7-FV rating...

So, yeah... These jokes would not even work on a show with a rating lower than TV-G... (You're SO pushing it, Gravity Falls...) Also, they had to put in those jokes so that even the older audience can "laugh[track]" alongside the younger audience...

The Disney Channel is still a public family programming station... You have to throw in something for the "whole" family somehow... (Too bad they're really terrible jokes that need a laughtrack to make them funny...)

You want jokes from a kids' show that are way dirtier than those two?
But I'm hesitant to even call those jokes. Maybe they work better when seen, but I just don't get it. What's the punchline? Toilet paper?

All I know is that the first joke is woefully out of date. India has had a population of over 1 billion since the turn of the millennium.

Get it together Disney Channel.

Oh, and nah. I don't think the jokes are particularly funny, but also not inappropriate. They're just... There.

Edit: I mean, Spongebob has some pretty nasty stuff in there when you think about it. Krusty Krab in Bikini Bottom? Yeah.

Well I must say, they do make some of the pun sections from I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again look pretty hot by comparison.

They seem stupidly harmless, or harmlessly stupid. I wouldn't use either precisely because of that.

I wouldn't say they are inappropriate.

The first one seems to be about tech support and how it sucks.

And the second is more about how silly those kids stuffing their bra are. I'd call it disgusting if the joke was on a kid having small breasts, (Like making fun of a 13-year old for not having a great rack) but that doesn't seem to be the case.
