Yo Escapists-

Are you celebrating tabletop day? Tell us what you're doing.

I'll go first! I'm kicking it off with a few rounds of card games at a local cafe, then digging in for big, fat heavy board games at home.

Take some pictures, too, and mail them to me - tabletop at escapistmag dot com - so I can put together a gallery of what our community did! I'll take some pictures of what I'm doing too!

Oh! And if you don't know what tabletop day is, it's this right here. [http://www.tabletopday.com/]

I downloaded DriveThruRPG's free bundle and now I'm looking for something quick and simple to play through with my family. They're not big gamers, unfortunately. With luck, I can at least talk them into a round of Apples to Apples.

EDIT: Good news, everyone! Searching these very forums led me to a pretty cool game called Dawn of Worlds [http://www.clanwebsite.org/games/rpg/Dawn_of_Worlds_game_1_0Final.pdf] that everyone has quite taken to.

Not exactly.

I did just post a character for an online Dark Heresy game and pre ordered the Astra Militarum codex from Total Wargamer (30% cheaper than official stores, fuck you GW, fuck you...also noticed that stormtroopers are now a separate codex that costs as much as the main codex. Fuck you GW, ad infinitum).

I might paint a Thalax unit later, but that's not going to make the most exciting picture.

Edit: Managed to get my neighbour to come round for a game of Space Hulk. Will email pics when done.

I was going to DM some Dungeon World but one player was all sick and another just didn't show up :(

Tomorrow'll be Pathfinder as a player with my older group, but I don't enjoy that quite as much.

Went to my FLGS hoping for some d20 action, but after an hour and a half the only things people were playing were Warmachine and MTG.

Wound up buying some MTG packs and heading home (got some good red/green cards, hurrah).

Unfortunately no. My group hasn't played in a long while due to the DM moving. I've been trying to decide on what system to use to try my hand at DMing a small side campaign. I'm wavering between one of the versions of Swords and Wizardry and OSRIC. Which are free and legal clones of D&D 0e and AD&D 1e respectively. http://www.swordsandwizardry.com/ http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/

What I would really like to host is a game in the nWOD, but my groups main DM is already planning to convert our D&D game into that.

Between the time it takes to get my friends together, and recent surgery to keep me from dying, I don't think I'm doing anything. Which is a shame.

I'm trying to get all my friends to get the ITT day bundle from Drivethru though. If nothing else it'd be nice if we all had the WoD sourcebook to work out of.

Well, I've never really gotten into the whole tabletop scene before, but I got the DriveThru bundle, and I'm reading through the Firefly campaign. No one to play it with, unfortunately, but I'd certainly like to give it a try, so that's something.

Have you heard of Roll20?
It's free and it's what my current group uses. My GM grumbles about it but that's because he wants to use more complex maps than just your basic dungeon outlines, but that would take too much time and effort imo. Just graph out the room/area outlines and put down the tokens, then describe the scenery and let the party use their imaginations I say. That way everyone gets to concentrate more on telling a good story and having exciting combat.

I'm sure you could find other people wanting to try the Firefly RPG since it was just released recently. Either fellow fans you know or people who are curious on Firefly forums and things. Just look at the corebook and see if it's something you'd like to play. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/128012/Firefly-RolePlaying-Game-Corebook

We were going to kick off an Urban Shadows (A Dresden Files-esque game, based off the fantastic Apocalypse World engine) mini-campaign , but The Winter Soldier proved too tempting. Here's hoping we can do it next week.

P.S. You can find all the freely shared, beta-tested stuff for Urban Shadows here.

That is a fantastic game. I know what I'm using the next time I need to GM a campaign, or maybe run a one-shot and see how it turns out (and probably loot the coolest parts of world for future games). Thanks for sharing!

My players are currently leveling up. Once they're done, I'll be running a game of Pathfinder for the next 8 hours or so.

Also, I backed a Kickstarter for a Pathfinder adventure earlier today. So there's that too.

Finishing up on my latest purchase, the Shadowrun 5 Handbook.
Have to say I really like how they made the Matrix more accessible, understandable and more fluid.
It feels like with some practice it no longer has to take so much time away from the group. What I mean was, in Shadowrun 4, Hacking was a slow and complicated progress. Which led to the fact that you were spending several minutes (10-15 sometimes) with just your hacker rolling against the GM, while rest of the group was just waiting. Doing nothing.

Now it's more faster paced, more easily explained.
Plus the character creation has been ...( I want to say streamlined because it really is, but these days it's almost always used for the word dumbed-down, which is totally not the case here)

And they've brought limits back. I like it, it provides a nice balance between expensive guns with high limits vs cheap guns with low limits. And no more single-handedly flipping over a car because you rolled lucky.

Nope. Stuck in a small town for a bit, and no friends. I used to play Dungeons and Dragons almost every Sunday a couple years ago.

My whole family got together, along with my older brothers girlfriend. There was candy, brownies, pizza, beer, soda, and all that unhealthy "party food". We did Settlers of Catan and Pandemic. Unfortunately for me, I've been sick with a stomach bug, so there was really no indulging on any of that greasy, yet delicious junk food. I'm sad now but I'll be thankful later when I don't have to get out of bed at 5AM to make messy love to the porcelain throne.

Is that today? How long has this been a thing?

I'm currently storyteller for a Hunter: The Reckoning campaign every Tuesday. The players have already surprised me by nearly pulling off a doomed Last Stand before one of them decided to look into the future and solve all of their problems then and there. It was a series of miraculous rolls.

I suppose I'll just have to be late to this party.

Just asking because I'm interested, not looking to derail the thread too much, but how do you like Shadowrun 5 so far?
I've almost finished the book, and so I've yet to play an actual game. The new rules look really great on paper, how do they hold up on the table?

Uhm, if you've played the 4th, you've played the 5th basically. It's more of an balance fix and an attempt to streamline hacking a little.
Sofar i like it, specially the new limit system manages to keep +20dice min/max chars in check a little bit. The priority system usually gives more well-rounded chars for beginners (expirienced players can still exploit the bejesus out of it".

Fighting goes faster, Hacking goes faster but with the downside that besides the decker/techno everyones Commlink is only a glorified smartphone anymore, since the only roles you're allowed to do without a deck is defending yourself and datasearch. Driving is a horrible mess, because as soon as you enter a combat scenario with a vehicle only a dedicated driver can do ANYTHING.
Example: I was sitting in my car at the docks, where we waited for someone to arrive. Long story short the shit began to hit the fan and suddenly we were being shot. I had already some stun damage from earlier and my car got hit by 1 salvo - now i only wanted to turn my car and drive away.
A 180° turn is either 1 or 2 and Docks give you +1, so you're already looking at a (3) with -2 + situational modifiers. And that's just turning a car. Btw, with Driving 1 + specialisation and an reaction of 6 i didn't manage to turn the car and then it got shot again. So i had to leave the car, beat every last enemy so we leave combat and finally i could drive away.

Main problem is: The numbers are way to high, in a real chase you're looking at 5+ needed succses easily and cars have a limit of their handling which is usually 3 or 4 -> You need a riggercontrol to be able to drive.

All in all, if you liked the 4th, you'll like the 5th same if not more. Now all we gotta do is to wait for the additional books :)
