No, I'm proud to be different to the orange, girly spaz girls at my school.

Besides, the time I spent gaming could be spent outside on street corners, smashing up cars and doing drugs.
I think my mum should count herself lucky I'm a nerd.

I don't know ... everybody plays games though o.o In the middle of lectures it's not uncommon to see people playing Free client versions of Ragnarok, or playing Neverwinter Nights on dedicated servers set up for fellow uni friends, on their laptops.

So nah .... its not uncool to be a gamer ... nor are you a loser for playing games ... unless you considered so many teachers, doctors and lawyers as 'losers'.

That being said, I do believe there are 'loser' gamers .... mmorpg players who become introverted lardoes and end up unemployable and general all-round disgusting people.

I think 99% gamers .... and most mmorpg-ers .... are sensible enough to realize that if you have to constantly turn to videogames to enjoy yourself, or they represent a major (as in 5+ hours a day, constant gaming, every day of the week) then perhaps you might need help.

I formulate this hypothesis on the basis that 99% of people who drank alcohol arent going to be alcoholics. But by the same token, such as in Australia, 80% of booze purchased is consumed by only 5% of the Nation. I feel its the same for games.

Much as im desperate to say no to this question, i find myself unconvinced by that answer.

I think it is all dependant on situation; whilst with a few of my mates il happily sit around and chat the finer points of games, from WoW vs WAR vs EVE to why Sonic pwns Mario. with other friends it just won't get mentioned at all and bringing it up is definatly of the cards.

infact it comes up with those mates only in so far as; Rockband? ok.

Family is much the same, grandparents wont ever understand it, parents probably never, although my mum robs the Wii to 'play' wii fit and other games of the such.

Being a football fan (Soccer to the unenlightened) i also have my friends in those circles, and it never comes up, except to discuss the occasional FM game you'v been playing. Or the now classic in those circles: "i signed him on football manager and he was awesome" when your club buys someone.

Back to the point at hand, surely, it is all about situation and how embarrised being a gamer makes you.

And for those high and mighty people belittling others for making you feel embarrised about gaming, iv been made to feel the same about being a football fan by my gamer friends. What goes around comes around, deal with it and welcome to life.

The only time I'd ever be embarrassed is when someone walks in on a particularily corny or terrible piece of dialogue. But other than that, no.
This is actually a good point. You're never more aware of the dubious nature of gaming than when your girlfriend walks in and sees you watching a bunch of huge-eyed idiots rambling about half-baked philosophy in Japanese (damn you, Eternal Sonata!).

It's sorta like when you were a kid and thought the movie you were watching was perfectly okay, until mom or dad comes and sits down and you are suddenly uncomfortably aware of every sex scene or dirty joke.

I gotta admit, I mention other hobbies to people I hardly know, before I mention gaming. Friends, of course, know the truth. I freely discuss other geeky activities like watching Sci Fi shows. In fact, computer gaming ranks slightly below getting lapdances, and about the same as downloading porn and studying psychoanalytic theory, when I comes to my openly discussing it. Doesn't matter, a guy has to have his secrets.

Not really. However, I'm embarrassed when I find my self neglecting friends/parents just to play some more.

I've always been intrigued when someone throws out the term 'hardcore' gamer and they look 17-18 years old on their profile pic <.<

Hardcore Gamer, to me, feels like people who can remember all the Space Quests XD .... but what's funny is that when an adventure game like 'Fragile' comes out on the Wii ... people criticise it for not being for the 'core' gamer ....

It'd be nice is somebody could actually adequately describe the term 'hardcore'

no, hell no! games are just like books or movies (in a sense, they are a waste of time as well) and i´m not ashamed to tell girls or anyone that i´m a gamer... if someone doesn´t like me because of that, fuck´em!

meh, i think that the term is definined differently by different people, for example i would define what you describe as oldschool gamer, where as the industry would define it as games like gears, or COD, etc.. like violent games..

and im flattered you think im 18, considering i just turned 16 XD

I'm not embarrassed to be a gamer, but then again I'm fairly casual with it; I spend more time playing and listening to music than I spend playing games. I don't see why it should be something to be embarrassed about unless it's the only thing you're remotely interested in.

so what about games that are action/adventure/rpg cross-genre's like Monster Hunter .... hardcore or not? Because I love them to bits @.@

I haven't been embarrassed about being a gamer since ... ever, really. From grade school, I tended to gravitate toward those who also gamed, as well as in relationships, and those few I encountered who didn't "get" the whole thing or thought it was only for losers weren't part of my life for very long.

not really, I was embarassed one time, when I bought "Psychic Detective" for the PS1, on the premise that it has softcore porn at the end, it was an FMV adventure and dare I say it... rather fun!, you had to go through cutscene after cutscene choosing certain routes which after an hour would bring you to a board game, a psychic boardgame!... whereby how well you do there shows you one of 18 different endings ranging from you being a vegetable (bad ending) to seeing some boobies (good ending).

Needless to say upon seeing the "puzzle" marketing blurb on the box my aunt played it while I went to the shops, her being a brain box with an IQ of 157 she got the good ending first time round, while I was at the shops, IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE FAMILY.... like my nan and everything.

A loser by whose standards? I mean has anyone ever came up to and said your a loser for playing video games? If they have then I'd recommend not listening. Because we all have things we like to do for recreation. Be it watching football, playing pool, and what have you. And chances are good that that if a person has told you this than they aren't the type of person you should be taking advice from.
