Are You Out of Touch With Popular Culture?

I heard a song at work the other day and I thought it was fairly catchy, albeit extreme compared to normal fare that would be heard on the radio. I asked one of the younger guys who it was and he said it was Katy Perry. That's when I realized that I've never heard any of her music before, at least that I know of. And much to my disbelief, I didn't vomit or anything!

And that's when I realized that, while I may be out of touch with popular culture (is it "Re-anna" or "Ri-HA-nuh"?), I don't automatically dislike something just because it's popular. Quite the opposite, I actually LIKE the majority of popular stuff out there. I just don't go out of my way to discover these things because I'm too busy enjoying other things. I mean, I haven't even seen a single episode of Game of Thrones for crying out loud.

I think my point is that there are so many new things and media and games to enjoy that I don't have the time to investigate them all. It can be described as 'attention exhaustion' I guess.

[hr]TLDR: Is there anything you guys know is popular but simply haven't had the time or energy to "get into"? [hr]

This reminds me of another song I couldn't identify. It was hip-hop-ish, and the chorus sounded as if children were singing. And if I had a gun to my head and was ordered to recite the chorus, I would honestly say the lyrics were:

"Tell me I'm your Cobra Commander."
No, seriously. That's what it sounds like.

Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. Couldn't get into either of them, no matter how much I try I just can't bring myself to care to watch them.

Oh boy, where do I start (I have been out of touch for a while now ever since I went to University)-

I never heard of One Direction until that news of one of them was leaving.

Never really heard any of Justin Beiber songs when he first started and only came to know him via the hate trains toward him. Even now I only had listen to two of his songs.

I didn't catch onto that Anaconda song nor have I actaully watched the video itself.

I took a pass on shows like Attack on Titans and Breaking Bad which at this point, I am now refusing to watched it out of spite toward my brother (I fed up that he never made attempt to watched shows that I'm into like One Piece so now I'm not attempting on watching shows he's into)!

Also I guess I am on the same boat with the Katy Perry and this Kim Kardashian thing aswell (sorry but her surname only make me think of Star Trek). That remind me, I never really got what made Paris Hilton famous in the first place other than her scandal (my bro only mention that her father is the owner of those super rated hotels).

Lastly I can never really get into Girl Generation which my brother is a huge fan of.

It was a year ago that I actually heard the "What does the Fox say" song via that Adventure Time parody and recently Captial Cities "Safe and Sound". I'm not sure if the latter was popular enough but I danm sure LOVE IT!

When you say popular, let's assume you mean that it's popular because it's GOOD, not because everyone watches even though it's SHIT, okay? We cool with that proviso? 'Kay.

I'm not out of touch with REAL popular culture. And when I say real, I mean NOT Reality TV. I watch anime, I like certain shows (Like House, 'cause Hugh Laurie is an excellent actor.), but if I'm not watching what you're watching? That's just preference. I haven't seen Breaking Bad, because I haven't felt the urge to get into it. It happens.

Most of what's popular on the radio and TV.

I kind of stopped giving a damn about keeping up with what's fresh my third year of college. It's a lot of effort, and not really worth it. I like me, my friends like me, who do I have to impress?

For me at least I think popular culture doesn't get me in certain areas or I'm just really picky. I don't like the top 40 songs or the radio since the stuff I listen to is few and far between. TV is just a desert with few oases for me.

I am pretty on-top of nerd culture as far as I can tell. As for general pop culture, I think I really only fall behind in regards to music. I hate pop and R&B, which is like 95% of it. I don't know a single Katy Perry song either.

TV shows since I don't watch much TV and can't be bothered following anything on the web. So I don't watch Arrow, Game of Thrones, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Breaking Bad ect and I certainly don't watch dramas or reality tv. I might watch some of the more interesting looking series out there eventually if I can be bothered buying a box set or something but I would rather read or play a game than just watch show, even a good one, most of the time.
I also don't listen to radio unless some else is playing it where I am so I'm not following popular music

I don't keep up with any tv shows, which seem to be heavily talked about in popular culture. I am a moderate weeb so I watch anime sometimes, but that's obviously a much more niche thing than GoT or Breaking Bad or whatever.

I hate a lot of the most popular music today, but do like a good number of generally popular musicians or bands. Just not the "MILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF LISTENS ALL OVER THE WORLD" type of act.

My thoughts exactly. There was nothing they offer I couldn't get better elsewhere. Same with Big Bang Theory, Community and whatever show Sofia Vergara is wearing tight clothes in these days.

Also Harry Potter. Read the first two and was bored out of my mind. And the movies were only meh and got progressively worse.

I'm probably more on top of pop culture more than I realize or care to admit.

I think in part because I do unironically love pop music. And at my one job I work with teenagers and we have daytime talk shows on like Ellen on the TV so I kind of absorb it while I'm working.

And if someone references something I don't understand, I just Google it, and then know exactly what it is in a second. Also I guess it's really good, easy ammunition for comedy, which I write lots of jokes but then chicken out come open mic time.

is it "Re-anna" or "Ri-HA-nuh"?
It's pronounced as if it was "Re-anne-a". A distressingly large amount of people (usually Americans) pronounce it the other way, and by God is it irritating.

Pop music I'm on top of, I like picking songs I like out from the ones I dislike, then making playlists to have on in the background whilst I play video games, yet I don't even listen to pop radio outside of when it's playing in local areas.
I go to the cinema a lot so I usually see the most popular films.
Most video games I play are AAA video games or the most popular indie titles so... yeah.

What I'm not bothered with is popular television. I don't watch Game of Thrones, or Breaking Bad, or Orange is the New Black or anything like that. I watch House and The Walking Dead, admittedly, but the former has ended and the latter's hype train has died down somewhat. I did try getting into Breaking Bad but just find it kinda dull, and I think that last episode has a massive bullshit moment so I'm not going to indulge in the whole thing. Sorry internet.

Well, I've never seen a single episode of Doctor Who, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, House of Cards, American Horror Story, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Archer, Bob's Burgers, Gravity Falls, Attack on Titan, Arrow, Flash, Daredevil, Girls, Lost or The Big Bang Theory. Conversely, I've only seen ONE Adventure Time episode.

I've never seen a single episode of any iteration of the Star Trek franchise.

I haven't seen or read anything from The Hunger Games, 50 Shades of Grey, Maze Runner, Shadow Hunters, Divergent or Percy Jackson series.

I've never read anything by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Jim Butcher or George Martin.

And I haven't played any videogame released this year or the year before (cellphone games notwithstanding).

I've had little to no interest in any music, of any genre really, released since 2000. Everything from the newer generations of artists I've encountered sounds very uninspired; very cold and assembly-line manufactured. Even albums released post-2000 from bands I actually like from prior decades have been mostly uninteresting to me. It's to the point where I've pretty much given up on it entirely, and now look backwards in time for new music to listen to. That makes my dad happy, at least, since he's a musician and loves the fact that I'm listening to the musicians that he grew up idolizing.

The problem is, everyone is out of touch with some aspects of popular culture because there's so much of it.

Me personally, I don't watch TV (the last thing I've seen was the first season of the Walking Dead).
I don't read YA books, I wait until they're turned into movies.
I don't listen to pop music although recently, I've listened to the top 100 best selling songs from this decade just to learn what's "hip" right now so I know what's what
I'm a massive movie nerd so I'm more in touch with that than most people.
Although I don't play many games these days but I know what's coming out, I'm even up to date with the business side of things.
I don't follow gossip although some gossip goes viral and it's hard to escape.
I guess the internet is a big part of popular culture and honestly, it's impossible to be up to date with everything but I'm aware of the hot topics of the day.
I don't follow fashion but I never did. From looking at people on the streets, it seems that 50's hairstyles are making a comeback.

Overall, it seems that I'm more in touch with pop culture than everyone I know.

I'm out of touch with most pop culture, about the closest I get is a love for The Big Bang Theroy.

Also why is it that when ever Justin Beiber shows his nice side he almost instantly turns around and shows what a gigantic jerk he can be, just because he has a ton of money.

Yep pretty much

I feel like the only popular thing that I have stayed in touch with the 5 past years is Attack on Titan. I actually followed Breaking Bad on netflix up to season 4 then for some reason all my interest in it just evaporated. Have not bothered to check out Game of Thrones nor I'm I willing to shell out the money for the DVDs or online streaming. I'm pretty much out of touch with all live action television series.

I'm out of touch with the latest porn stars and the latest porno movies that they all star in...

But [more] seriously, I can't keep track with all these movies based off of novels that I've never heard and/or read about... I wish I could stream HBO just so that I can only keep up with the latest episode of Silicon Valley... I stop keeping track on what the fuck Disney Channel shows since I could just go to Disney XD, at best, to see it anyway... All my music updates come from the most "randomest" of places and not from who's topping the mainstream chart today...

Other than that, if I want to show what's hot and what's not, either I watch some recap shits or I wait until VH1 does their recurring I Love The XX's "mini-series"...

Yeah, a lot of times I'll get asked what I think of some popular thing, and I tend to have one of the three following responses: I never heard of it, I heard of it but know nothing about it, or I heard of it and tried it but I never really got into it.

But for the most part I fall under the category of somewhat liking a lot of popular stuff but generally preferring stuff that is less popular.
