Armed and Dangerous is a third-person-shooter in which you take on the role of a leader of a band of Scottish outlaws known as The Lion Hearts named Roman on a quest to steal the magic Book of Rule and overthrow the evil King Forge. This is a last-gen game so the graphical technology and interface are sub par. The controls are imprecise, I set the mouse sensitivity to 0 and it still took me the entire first level to get used to aiming, but the game was still too easy because the AI is laughable, the enemies stand reloading right in front of you and will not step away from mounted guns to kill you when you are right behind them, and your support characters usually die within the first five minutes of any mission they participate in. the more powerful weapons only hold a few shots so most of the time the only viable strategy is to run right up to the enemy and spray them with the machine gun.
You can order your support characters to either "defend area"(read stay behind and make no meaningful contribution) or "defend me"(read charge into enemy fire and die.) The levels are ugly, small and linear. I am actually glad for those last two because Roman moves slower than any action game character has the right to. The game has no unique boss battles and the only missions are, get from point A to point B, rescue peasants and return them to their homes, kill some specific bad guys, blow up some specific buildings, defend some specific buildings, and these base defense missions in which you take control of a mounted turret that can only move along a semi-circular wall and must stop either 100 or 50 enemies from scaling the wall, these missions are more frustrating than they should be because the turrets accurate range is atrociously short, and I didn't figure out that pressing the alt-attack button during these segments launched a mortar until the last level of the game. Then again I was playing the Steam version so I didn't have the manual which probably makes that clear. You can unlock extra features by collecting hidden works of art, but none of them are that interesting.
Never the less I liked Armed and Dangerous, because it is charming and funny. When you complete a mission objective you hear a triumphant bagpipe sting. When you kill an enemy they sometimes shout "me arse! me beautiful arse!" When you pick up a peasant they sometimes say "get your hand off my arse!" When you return a peasant to their home you hear something like "wife Im home, what are those?" "divorce papers deary Im going on holiday." The story is by no means coherent and we never find out what happened to King Forge, yet the characters are imaginative and endearing and the cut scenes are all amusing. My final verdict, the gameplay is mediocre but not a deal breaker and the characters and humor carried me through it, and they may carry you through it too. I recommend Armed and Dangerous to anyone who can forgive lackluster gameplay for humor and charm.
