As a community, are we becoming too harsh on those who make mistakes?

This thread is mainly being written because I'm starting to wonder if people on this community are starting to become overly hostile to those that make mistakes when making a thread.

For example, newcomers to the Escapist are often assaulted if they make a thread which is a repeat thread as more experienced posters would know and remember. Shouldn't our role as a community and especially those who have been here longer be constructive criticism instead of belittling them about the search button? I'm sure they didn't want to make a repeat thread either, but didn't know about the ability to search through the forums. Remember the search button is fickle at times as well, it can be hard to find topics unless the correct phrasing is used.

Another thing which people seem to leap upon as a immoral offence is people who accidently hit the 'enter' button whilst creating a thread, creating a scenario where 'no text' occurs. It does happen quite often sometimes but most of these occurances are mitakes, and the OP feels embarrassed by making them. As a community we should at least give them support and help so they can make their feelings known in a thread rather than attacking them for a simple mistake.

I'm sorry, but I really feel as a community we should be more accomodating to these issues so the Escapist can be for the enjoyment of all, newcomers and experienced posters alike.

People in general, not only The escapist is becoming too sensitive to different kinds of shit. Surely some of it is justified, but people tend to forget that they have the "ignore" choice.

It's been like that for as long as I've been here. Yeah, it needs to change, but it isn't something new.

Not to burst the feeling of love, but seen over an extended period of time the escapist is becoming steadily more lenient. I can only imagine Joe the Moderators mustache curling back in righteous fury with one look at what now fills Gaming Discussion. That would not be a good day to step out of line.

I did this when posting my first thread and duplicated it as well. I was embarrassed but I received help from XITEL who explained to contact a mod and that I could EDIT the text. I didn't get a lot stick for it.

I think if an explaination is posted straight away people are understanding. I tend to treat other people how I'd like to be treated.

As you say it's a simple mistake and I have seen people lose it over a blank post.

Yes, I hate it when people feel the need to correct other people who don't ask for it or just do it to be a smart ass. I also hate it when people say TROLL as soon as they jump into a thread that doesn't interest them, and then you got the idiots that write SEARCH BUTTON with no input at all.

No one is BLOODY perfect! I bet everyone has made a thread they are not proud with and written silly things by mistake. We all get better with experience.

I really wish that you'd made a typo in this post so that I could have ironically pointed it out. :(

But yeah, it is kind of silly. Even topics that have been done to death can occasionally be fun, and it doesn't take much to tell the person what they've done wrong.

Well you've been here a month or so and in that time you formed this opinion?

That alone shows it is a problem.

My thoughts exactly..
I've preached the same earlier, but still people always need to pick on people even on the smallest spelling errors..

In general people should be more humble, and think a little before posting a rude answer, there is actual people who wrote it, maybe they put some time and effort into it.. Then the last thing they need is for some fucktard to step on their work..

There is usually a reason for someone to not have many friends, and girl/boy friend..
Because if many of you act irl like you do in some of your answers here on the Escapist, its not hard to figure out why you are a lonely soul..

But that is the actions of the mods, what about ours?

Hence why I feel as a community we should do something about it. And as people who have been here much longer than myself have been pointing out, this is not a new issue. That is the main reason why we need to address this problem before people start to get put off or turned away by how some of the members of this website act towards others.

This is a repeat thread! Try using the search button! You know, that button that says "Search >".

[small]Disclaimer: The above statement contains sarcasm. Read with caution.[/small]

I agree with you. The only time repeat threads really irk me is when it is something obvious, or something that was already done in the last 48 hours. And I can't stand it when people respond to (no text) threads; The OP made a mistake by accidentally pressing enter, but what's your excuse for responding to it and bumping it?

I will admit that I do act hostile to pointless threads every so often (mostly vs. threads) but I try to be polite about it.

The Mods represent the interests of the community. Be civil, be polite, but don't tolerate the intolerable in silence. Your duty is to be civil, their duty is not to run blindly into a forum without lurking for at least a day. We did our jobs, and we'll keep doing it, but that doesn't mean we have to hold respect for them even as we hold our tongues in courtesy for them. They have showed that they have no interest in the well-being of the community.

Who moderates the moderators?
Themselves. You are guests on their forum under their rules. They do their best and are not infallible, but where there are no consequences a democracy is unsuitable. In the words of someone wiser than me, think of them as a 'benevolent dictatorship', not deaf to your pleas but also far from accountable to your accusations. Once again, civility is the key.

How can you tell between a person who doesn't care and one who makes mistakes?

Dude, your new Avatar is awesome. Beyond that, I agree. Also, you know the guy with the Frylock avatar who's been spamming useless threads? I feel that we're justified getting angry at him, seeing how he had 500+ posts and still does that.
