This is a 1st day buy for me. Never change Platinum. Never change.
Now will it kill you guys and gals to show footage of Bayonetta 3?

I somewhat disagree with you on the gameplay front. Most of Platinum's output in combat does not play the same. The only time that feels true is if you Transformers Devastation (which still plays a lot different from Bayonetta despite using the same dodge mechanic), TMNT (weakest effort due to Activision), and Nier: Automata. The last one is more understandable as the combat was just alright, and the story was the obvious strong point. I know anime is personal tastes, but the game has what looks like a pretty straightforward story. Nothing "deep" or complex, just something to be entertaining with a few small twists or hidden details. As far as dubbing Japanese games and anime in general, we've mostly reached that point in where the English dub actors are just as good as the Japanese actors. Sometimes even better. That is my take on it.Casual Shinji said:Eh, we'll see. Looks interesting enough, but I can't say I'm much of a fan of Platinum's way of doing combat, which kinda feels the same in every game they make. I'm also not too keen on the anime look, since anime look means anime writing and/or anime dubbing, which.. well, is trash.
Yeah I gotta agree, aside from vanquish, every time I pick one of there game up I feel like I've already played it many time before. I think part of the problem is the gameplay never really evolve over the game itself, there's always this over reliance on dodge and counter attacking at the right time, and I've never been a fan of sitting around in combat just waiting for the enemy to attack. Nier automata was such a snoozefest I don't understand why anyone bother playing it when let's play exist,Casual Shinji said:Eh, we'll see. I haven't played every Platinum game, but Bayonetta (and I'm assuming the sequel), Reavengence, and Nier: Automata all play extremely similar. There's nearly always somekind of slo-mo effect triggered by a dodge or counter, and it generally all feels pretty weightless like it's plastic action figures fighting.CoCage said:I somewhat disagree with you on the gameplay front. I feel Platinum's writing is much more western than anime (I don't think they wrote anything with regards to Nier). They go for a completely campy, B-movie style of writing for sure though. They have the Japanese influences obviously so the subject matter leans more eastern but not really the style IMO. I think both Bayonetta and Vanquish were made for English VO and the Japanese was the actual dub. Vanquish probably has more influence from Flash Gordon than it does from anything else. I loved the gravely voice competition the 2 main characters had going on throughout the game and the hilariously bad way the main character "reversed the polarity", which are both western tropes. Anyway, I'm a pretty big hater of anime in the sense that it easily has the highest percentage of crap than probably anything else ever (like 99.9% crap instead of the Sturgeon's standard of 90%). The amount of times I've tried an anime that has been rated basically an unanimous masterpiece and it's been one of the worst things I've ever seen (e.g. Elfen Lied) has happened several times. Though it can be great like I love Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and just bought a wallet with the Laughing Man logo on it.Casual Shinji said:As for the anime thing, Japanese writing within (modern) anime and games is too entrenched in its own tropes and geek pandering for it to be entertaining for me anymore. The only exception I can point to being Yakuza, probably because it features old dudes and not sexy teenagers/twenty-somethings, and revolves around crooks which I don't think is very popular among Japanese geeks. And the dubbing is mainly in regards to anything seeped in anime tropes, which is pretty much all of current anime and games with anime aesthetics. I don't care for dubs in general, as I think Japanese writing and acting (when it's good/entertaining) doesn't mingle well with the english language at all, but when it's applied to 'ANIME' it just becomes unbearable to me.
I think there's a certain flavor of storytelling that can be adequately described as "Western anime style." With Japanese developers creating a story that's set in the west but has unmistakable eastern stylings in its writing. Examples include Vanquish, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and so on. And they've certainly gotten a rap for being campy. Now I enjoy a good bit of camp, but the flavors do tend to blend over each other from time to time, and I don't blame people who're suffering from a bit of overload.Phoenixmgs said:I feel Platinum's writing is much more western than anime (I don't think they wrote anything with regards to Nier). Of the three you mentioned, some similarities apply, but once again, if you played all of them, there are noticeable differences. Bayonetta was always about graceful movements and dodging, but there is item you can buy that acts like DMC's Royal Guard (itself a mechanic from 3rd Strike and Mark of the Wolves); though not as strict. Rising is all about parrying, and does not even have a dedicated dodge button. There a run button on one of the triggers and a move you can buy called Defensive Offensive which acts as a back dodge while getting in a single slice. The only time slow-mo really comes in to play is when you're blade mode or perform perfect parries. Automata combat is weird mix of its prequel, and gameplay from Bayo and Rising. There is a dodge button, but you don't even get the slo-mo effect (which is an equipable chip), you don't get until about a 1/3 a way through in to the game. I wouldn't call the combat in any of the games weightless; especially when we're talking about Rising. The one that comes to closest to that is Automata, which is ironic due to all of the androids and robots.Casual Shinji said:I haven't played every Platinum game, but Bayonetta (and I'm assuming the sequel), Reavengence, and Nier: Automata all play extremely similar. Did you ever try Viewtiful Joe? If you like the aesthetics of Okami, you'll enjoy VJ's too. Mad World is another with unique atheistic. Kamiya had nothing to with Mad World, but I thought it was worth pointing out.Silvanus said:Love the look of this. After I loved Okami so much I've wanted another Hideki Kamiya actiony game to grab me, but for some reason the aesthetics of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta never appealed... but this does.
Nintendo won e3 for me.
Platinum is known for being absurd and over-the-top; why do you care about this little thing? That is not even the worst thing they have ever done in terms of costumes or absurdity.altnameJag said:If they were triplets instead of twins, and the third sibling was non-binary, would they wear chaps?
(Seriously though, c'mon. It's supposedly a uniform and they're both in the same unit. Booty shorts for all or booty shorts for none)
That there is... but there's a lot of right in a hawt guy cop in shorts fighting with a mech dog as well. Then it'd be hitting all my bases.Dreiko said:There's nothing wrong with a cute cop girl in shorts fighting with a mech dog. There's in fact a butt load of right in it.
The drawing style in Viewtiful Joe looks very similar, but I'm not feeling the little big-headed guys. They look like bobble-heads.CoCage said:Did you ever try Viewtiful Joe? VJ's super-deformed style can take some getting used too, if you are not a fan or haven't seen it done that often. Don't let the look fool you, the game has depth in the combat, and it is challenging. Especially on Ultra V Rated.Silvanus said:That there is... but there's a lot of right in a hawt guy cop in shorts fighting with a mech dog as well. Not that this is a dealbreaker, of course, the game looks awesome regardless.

Mad World looks pretty good after a quick gameplay vid search, I must say.
Neat. 'Course, I'd like the gal to look cool in her outfit and the guy to look cute in his for once in video game history. Or for a uniform to be, you know, uniformDreiko said:But the girl looks cute in the shorts and the guy looks cool in his outfit. Why does there need to be some type of monotonous clothing line when this is a video game that's both very fantastical and also intended to be visually stimulating. ^^^CoCage said:As far anime in general, there is problem with being homogenized in to near constant pandering within the Otaku culture. It's why I don't nearly enough anime as I did back when I was a kid and teenager. The ones that do stick and try its own thing make it all the more valuable and worth watching.
