Hi guys, my xbox 360 got the red rings of death back in early january and the guarantee on it has expired, meaning that microsoft won't fix it. Anybody know of any places that will repair it (like Game) or do I have to bite the bullet and get a new one?

I'd rather not get a new one as I'm an achievement whore and am very attached to my gamerscore.

Achievements aren't linked to your profile?
(Or are profiles are linked to your xbox???)

Getting a new one won't mean death for your gamerscore, your gamercard isn't attached to the console, you can retrieve it on any console. Your save games will be lost though.

As for getting it repaired, I'm pretty sure the warranty only means you get a free repair, I'm not 100%, but if it's out of warranty, Microsoft will still repair it, it'll just cost some moolah.

I could be wrong though, hopefully others can confirm or deny it.

Um, your gamerscore doesn't go away. I believe that's always tied with your gamercard. Plus, if you do get a new console, you can transfer your hard drive to the new console or transfer the info on the hard drive to a new hard drive.

All our Xbox repairs were done under warranty (although we do have a dead one lying about the place at the moment). It is certainly worth ringing MS and asking about coverage and any repair fees. RRoD has been a terrible embarrassment to Microsoft and I don't know how much latitude there is in repair work.

A quick google found me http://www.consolewerks.co.uk/xbox-360-repair.html now this is not an endorsement, I have never dealt with them. But they seem to indicate a 40GBP RRoD repair fee which is better than the cost of a replacement (what is the going rate these days for the basic version?)

Repairing stuff is something we don't do nearly enough in this country, everything is far too disposable. In your place I would probably look for someone to quote for repairs. Just make sure you get what they are doing in writing and don't give them the power to run up a massive repair cost, open ended repairs are not a great idea.

As for your profile, that belongs to the user, not the console that they are playing on. If you have a removable HD or a memory unit, you can just stick your profile there for ease. But if memory serves one of the first thing a brand new box will do is ask you to claim your gamer profile and give you boxes for user name and password.

Congrats!

haha nah, sucks when that happens. my $350 mp3 player is broken and its out of warrenty so I'm left musicless :( luckly its only like $220 now, but I can't afford that atm :( (Cowon D2 for those wondering, best MP3 player I've used)

ANYWAY, no idea man. Ask microsoft if they can fix it? It'll cost money tho.

Microsoft will still fix it, they just make you pay money for the privilege.

Also, Gamestation used to have a repair service, but it's ages since I've been in one so it may no longer exist.

Are you talking about just the warranty that is out or the extended warranty? Also, have you checked xbox.com yet? You can check if you can do anything with it by entering the code on the back of your 360 when you go to the site and inquire about repairs... its the top option after you click on the "Support" heading.
