Krunk, we have no 'freedom of speech/expression' in our Constitution. Like Aardvark said, we have some legal precedent (I believe this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Capital_Television_Pty_Ltd_v_Commonwealth] is one of the important ones) created by the High Court. However, all it takes is Parliament passing legislation, and that precedent is over-ridden, like what happened with the Mabo decision, the Wik decision and the subsequent legislation by the Howard Government.
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

At least we abolished the White Australia Policy. Not that it affects me.

I knew it wouldn't go through, I was more angry about them feeling the need to waste more tax payer money on trials after being told all the problems and how it would not work by experts.

Heh, yeh, good ol' Gough... and it's a very good thing that the White Australia Policy was removed... otherwise, I'd never of been born here.

You might not know it, but Aussie Japanophiles have prospered ever since they got rid of that law... there must be a connection... hmm... I wonder what it could be? Still, rather have Japanophiles in my country than racists. Some would argue that there's no difference, but there is.

Anyway, as I read this article, all I could think of was Solid Snake saying "Otacon... they tried to censor the internet again... we have to stop Metal Gear..."

It's not dead yet. One Senator's withdrawal of supports isn't going to stop the censorship. We need Australian's to actually know what the government's plans are (quite difficult when the guy in charge refuses to speak to anyone) and we need people to tell the government THEY ELECTED that they don't want it.

Hooray! It's finally over!

...but wait. How did you know about this before me?

Mind you, pretty much every channel except for Ten is wailing "We can't wait for internet censorship, can you?" I could understand that they wouldn't want to reveal the 'sad' news to the general public.

What the hell were they thinking, anyway? Filters would have slowed down our internet further than it already is, which I might add is probably the slowest of all the countries that have internet. Not to mention it violates our (somewhat vague) freedom of speech.

Now all they need to do is remove the filters on school computers. The only sites you can go on? Google and Wikipedia. And the former is useless for obvious reasons.
Stop complaining! You're internet is faster than ours. [New Zealand]. http://www.speedtest.net/global.php?continent=6&country=18 vs http://www.speedtest.net/global.php?continent=6&country=5
Internet filtering is bad yes, but what about us we are, since the 28th of feb, guilty upon accusation, not proof. So basically the RIAA says to our ISP, they are pirating, warn them/cut them off, and the ISP has to do this WITHOUT checking to see if their claims are in fact valid.

Wow. Who'd have thought all this insane stuff would happen after I chose to leave Australia for England - (I'm sure there's some irony in there somewhere...)

Stupid censorship. - Then again, there's a group filtering the web in England too. Although, considering some of the horrible things I've seen, it seems the only thing getting filtered is child porn. (they managed to take down wikipedia at some point because of it though, so... It isn't without consequences. XD.)

I'm afraid to say I've never paid much attention to Australian politics. Maybe I should--this sort of thing has always interested me.

Also: Nick Xenophon is possibly the most awesome name for a politician since Senator Specter. Those two should team up and start a league of supervillains.
