Australian Ratings Board Upholds Mortal Kombat Ban

The game's gory fatalities remain a sticking point for the Australian ratings board.

The OFLC, the Australian equivalent to the ESRB, has upheld its decision to refuse classification to the new Mortal Kombat [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003O6E1JS/ref=s9_simh_gw_p63_d6_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=1AHY9KP41XRGJFA1EWJ5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470939031&pf_rd_i=507846 ], in the face of an appeal by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. This effectively bans the game for sale in Australian, unless WBIE change the game so that it is more palatable to the OFLC's sensibilities.

The sticking point seems to be the game's sixty fatalities. The OFLC acknowledged that the finishing moves were obviously exaggerated in nature, and that the game was fantastical in tone, but said that the high quality of the game's graphics pushed the game beyond what is appropriate for a minor to see. As Australia lacks an adult rating for videogames, this meant that the game was refused classification.

WBIE resubmitted the game, however, saying that the game was no worse than other titles that had already been passed for sale. This effort ultimately proved unsuccessful, but WBIE thanked the thousands of Mortal Kombat fans, both in Australia and internationally, who had voiced their support for the publisher's efforts.

The most likely course of action now would seem to be that WBIE tones down the level of violence in the game, and resubmits it a second time. It's not an ideal solution by any means, but it's hard to see what other options WBIE really has. Hopefully, it won't take too much to get the game the thumbs up for an MA15+ rating, allowing Australian gamers to have an experience close to what developer NetherRealm, wanted, without having to go to the trouble of importing the game from another country.

Mortal Kombat comes out for Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 19th.

This is why australia is screwed :( Seriously, too many people are butthurt and can't take care of their own children, which results in people being punished for things they cannot even control.
P.S. If Mature Adults are considered minors, then what do we consider Mature Really Old People? Mature Young Adults?

These shitheads running my country really need to wrap their heads around the concept of "decent rating system" or else we'll be twenty years behind the rest of the gaming world.

FAIL.

Has anyone made a green blood joke yet?

To be honest, I'm surprised Mortal Kombat is even still around, but then again, I was surprised that people actually care that Duke Nuke 'em is finally being resurrected.

Tons of palette-swap characters, all of the fighters have the exact same move except for a couple of specials - the only thing interesting about the orignal was the ability to rip someone's spine out, and they even got one-upped on the gore factor by Killer Instinct.

i think the laws down under could probably do with some reform, i mean they have 18 movies right? However i can also see where they are coming from on this one, there is an undeniable high level of violence in this game, but then i refer you to the first point anyway.
But if AVP got a release there then they have some explaining to do cos that shit can getquite nasty ( checks to see if spine is still in place).

To people that keep stating the obvious, we know, we've been trying to fix this shit for years and everybody I know is for the 18 rating, the government does NOT listen at all with issues like this. The government is not our people, so don't confuse this. I pray for the day when the old farts that currently control it die out and we can get a few changes actually happening.

I'm hoping for them to censor it for release so that I can import the thing anyway and not have to worry about customs taking my shit away. I really want to import the Collectors edition and guide from America but am slightly paranoid if they open it.

Seriously, Australia, toughen up your shrimps and barbies! Just slap on a "MA17+" rating and release the kangaroo flippin' game! The whole "it's too violent for a poor child to witness!" is a load of Vegemite, and it wouldn't be a problem if you just carved a damn "MA17+" rating out of a croc's belly!

What I think is the worst part is that they've released plenty of games way more violent than this. Didn't MadWorld get released there no problem?
