Fire. Air. Water. Earth.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko created the United Republic of Nations from the Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom. It was intended to be a bastion of peace and progress, and for a long time it was. It weathered many trials, but the courage of the citizens and the protection of the Avatar - first Aang, then Korra - safeguarded the city through its many crises.

But evil can arise anywhere, and much that is good can be twisted by it. The powers of the Republic found themselves mighty, with a thriving industry and highly advanced technology. The ancient Four Nations that surrounded it were aging and decrepit, slow to embrace the modern age. Like Sozin over three hundred years ago, they sought to share their prosperity with the rest of the world, and they would do so whether the world wanted it or not.

Avatar Korra attempted to stop this, calling upon her incredible bending abilities to bring a stop to the invasion of the Earth Kingdom, but even the Avatar could not stop the armies that were arrayed against her. The sheer power of the new technologies in the world leveled the playing field between Army and Avatar, and for days the armies of the Republic battled Korra. In the end, however, the Avatar was defeated and slain.

With the Avatar defeated, the best hope for victory against the conquering Republic was gone. The Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, and Fire Nation brought all their strength against the Republic, along with the reborn Air Nomads, but it wasn't enough. One by one, the great bastions of the world began to fall. First was Ba Sing Se, the great walls incapable of standing under the barrages of Republic tanks and artillery and incapable of stopping Republic airships and bombers. Then the Northern Water Tribe in all its great strength faced the massive Republic Navy, the great glaciers shattered under the barrage of their rockets. The Fire Nation was the last to fall, Fire Lord Roku leading the defense of the capital. The conflict was long and vicious, the Fire Nation nearly able to match the Republic technologically. But their courage and ingenuity was not enough, and the Republic unleashed their greatest and most terrible weapon upon the Fire Nation, a bomb capable of annihilating entire cities in an instant.

As the ashes fell, the new Fire Lord Zhang unconditionally surrendered to the Republic. The Four Nations had been defeated and now throughout the world, the banner of the United Republic flew.

All throughout the Earth Kingdom the hunt for the new Avatar began by both the Republic and the forming Resistance groups. If the Republic were to find the Avatar, the last hope for liberation would be gone.

Ten years have passed since Avatar Korra's death, and no one has yet found the Avatar. Many have lost hope, they fear that the Avatar cycle has been broken, and that the Avatar will never return, or that the Avatar has been found and caged by the Republic for all time. But there are some of us who still hold hope that the Avatar will return, and that freedom will come.

Nearly two centuries have passed since Avatar Korra first set foot within Republic City, and much has changed since then. The bustling industrial metropolis of Republic City has continued to grow into a marvel of the new age, bright with light and neon.

But even as the city has sprawled wider and grown taller and brighter, those caught in the margins face greater suffering. Those at the top enjoy lives of luxury and ease, they are executives, politicians, scientists and generals. Each serves the Republic and all find great reward. Those in between fall deeper and deeper into the crevasse of poverty, forced to choose between low-paying, menial labor or starvation. Much of the work of skilled professionals has been taken up by computers and robots, leaving the lower classes suitable only for cheap labor and military work - and the occasional Bending prodigy.

For many the only hope of escaping life in the lower reaches of Republic City is either to become a professional bender - nearly impossible without both prodigious talent and the sponsorship of one of the city's many powerful corporations - or to become a criminal, a soldier in the shadow war the corporations fight between themselves. If you're willing to risk your life and your freedom you have a chance of escaping, but those who succeed are few and far between.

The passing of time has brought about many technological wonders, building upon what had already come. Television, jet aircraft, rocketry, atomics, computers, internet, cybernetics, space travel, artificial intelligence, the list goes on. The rate of growth seems to grow faster and faster, every day bringing a new wonder to those with the wealth to afford it.

Out of Character Information: Personal firearms were never invented in this world. While if someone had the idea they could exist tomorrow, the idea has not occurred to anyone. That said, cannons and fireworks and the such do exist.

Personality:

Skills: No need to list mundane skills - being a good cook, skilled at Pai Sho, or generally anything that would not have an application in a situation is unnecessary. Describe your skills, don't just say, y'know "He's a good martial artist" or "He's an Earthbender." Describe what he/she does, how she does it, what his particular quirks are and whatnot. Try not to list too many, but I'd prefer you erred on the side of too many than too few, it's easier to weaken a character than to strengthen them.

Edited in: I can't believe I actually need to say this but no Bloodbenders, for the love of Christ. Also, Airbenders are back.

Gear: Any possessions your character typically keeps within his or her grasp. Do not include vehicles, residences, bank accounts, or anything else you can't fit in a backpack. Cybernetics should be mentioned here, however. Note that you cannot bend through a cybernetic limb, and lacking a limb will severely weaken most Bending forms.

Heh, more like Kyoshi. Korra died around the age of 170 or so, which is still decades short of Kyoshi's record.

I have a question.

Why aren't there guns in your Avatar world? I mean, You have cannons and Fireworks; even space travel yet not a single gun.

Are you telling me; NO one came up with this thought; "Golly, gee I wonder what it will be like to have cannons that fit into the palms of our hands. That sure will be useful!"

Someone probably did, but then someone else said "How is that a good idea when I can shoot lightning out of my face?"

He then would proceed to shoot lightning out of his face. Thus ending the story of guns in the Avatar world.

One, because they weren't in The Legend of Korra. If you haven't invented guns by the time you've gotten that far, odds are good you probably won't.

Two, because I don't want them. Guns depersonalize combat.

Three, because of what Left Hand said. Bending makes firearms kind of unnecessary for the most part.

Four, firearms put a lot of power in the hands of one person, and that power doesn't require any training unlike bending. The Government has a vested interest in keeping the masses weak and helpless.

I'll have a go I suppose. Today's sheet has a twist.

Name: Dirk and Daria Pace

Age: Both 19

Gender: Male and Female, respectively

Appearance: Dirk is a young man standing 5'8" tall, and weighing about 137 lbs. His skin is pale, almost white. His body is athletically built and absurdly well-toned from a life of constant movement. His facial features are somewhat severe, with strong, harsh red eyes, a sharp and slightly upturned nose, and flushed lips that might be described as "pouty" by his sister. He'd hate to hear that. His ears are a little larger than would be expected, and are angled out and away from his face a moderate degree. His chin is rather pronounced, though his face is thin and his jawline toes the line between youthful and downright feminine. He has a very large forehead, not so much in its volume as the space between his brow and his hairline. His hair, nearly colorless, settling around a platinum blond, and flies back from his head in a styled, flowing mess whose closest parallel would be a flock of seagulls. His left arm is missing, replaced by a cybernetic prosthetic colored black, with no attempts to disguise it as organic. Orange lights on the knuckles are the closest to color on him.

He wears clothes with a minimum of color. A white polo shirt with the collar turned up, and the old Fire Nation symbol for "Freedom" is emblazoned on its back. Stitched around the shoulders is an orange bit of cloth similar to the type that the old Air Nomads wore over their robes. A black undershirt goes beneath the polo, and his jeans are the same color, as are his running shoes. He is never seen without his sword, an old-style Fire Nation blade with a white scabbard, ornately designed with sculpted red flames. A similar pattern is on its grip. A white cloth belt is used to attach it to his waist. He wears extremely dark, triangular shades to shield his eyes from the sun.

His twin, Daria, is almost precisely the same height as he is, though she's a bit stockier, lots of muscle packed on her bones. Her hips are particularly wide, and her legs are like solid pillars of stone. Her skin tone, unlike her brother, is the natural brown-ish tone it would normally be, albeit it still on the lighter side from her Fire Nation-descended father. Her eyes, slightly larger, are brown. Beyond that, her face is nigh-identical to her brother's. The only differences are a somewhat less pronounced chin, rounder cheeks, and a larger nose. Her lips aren't any larger than Dirk's, but they seem that way with her neutral facial state falling into a definite grin. It's completely opposed to the odd frown that the other Pace sibling tends to wear. Her hair is dark brown, falling over her brow loosely, and two gathered-up bunches of it from either side of her face. The rest is pulled into a topknot in the style of the old Water Tribes, falling behind her about halfway down her neck.

She is dressed in a plain T-shirt with a pullover hoodie that is a mix of olive and a darker green, and generally tailored to be reminiscent of the colors of the Earth Kingdom. She wears cargo shorts, and simple running shoes. She carries no weapons, but tends to wear fingerless black gloves and a black visor over her eyes when out "working". Both siblings wear a pair of black backpacks, with most of their mission equipment stored within.

Personality: Dirk is something of a focused man. He's had a goal on his mind since his youth, and at any given point you can be fairly certain that this goal is forefront in his mind. He is definitely the serious one of the pair, and tends to be short and to the point with people when he's actively trying to get something done. He is not without his amusement, however. He has a very off-beat sense of humor, finding utterly bizarre comments, plays on words, and quips to be hilarious, and makes very generous use of them. There is a word very important to him: honor. It is important because he must remind himself daily to ignore any and all compulsions to behave with such aspirations. He will be as dirty, underhanded and conniving as he needs to be. This, combined with his talents, make him an excellent infiltrator.

Daria is a boundlessly excitable girl, always on the prowl for a good scrap. While she's just as passionate as her brother about their shared goal, she tends to express it by pouring said passion into absolutely everything she does. Whereas her brother is abrasive by choice, she is abrasive by generally existing. She's loud, boisterous, and has the tact of a rhinoceros-bear. She has a passion, potentially a lust for combat, and will jump into a brawl with minimal provocation. She considers it a vital part of communication, and gets to know people by studying how they fight. She has a tendency to have a high opinion of anyone that can fulfill the difficult task of keeping up with her in combat. She's also very respective of those with opposing ideologies, so long as they stick to them and stand up for them. Hypocrites, cowards, and their ilk are not in for a good time if Daria is around.

Skills: Dirk is a prodigal child in the art of free-running. Give him a point A and a point B, and he will get there in the absolute minimum of time. He's a skilled combatant, mixing his sword skills with a freestyle, highly mobile fighting style, based around erratic movements and creative use of the environment. A lot of his training is dedicated to the idea of being able to fight benders on even ground, being too fast to hit with fire, too sure-footed to buffet with wind or water, and too unpredictable to trap with earth or metal. He's a decent hacker, capable of slipping through security systems unseen. Has something of a penchant for property damage when given high explosives, or his sister.

Daria is not quite the hand-to-hand master that Dirk is, though he actively teaches her everything that he knows, which puts her very close to his skill level. On top of this, she is a Metalbender, and a good one at that. Her bending specialty is large-scale devastation, using an advanced world made so thoroughly of metal to her advantage. She is the primary weapon in the siblings' two-person war on the Republic, the hammer to her brother's scalpel. She is creative, but has little finesse, so her method of combat generally revolves around finding a cool-looking way to smash anyone in her path. She has zero ability in free-running, but can usually manipulate the metal around her to get where she wants to go.

Gear: Dirk's sword isn't made of anything special, but it's well-cared for, and as sharp as it can possibly be at any given time. He keeps all manner of equipment in his pack to make sure it stays that way. He keeps rope, grappling hooks, throwing knives, and a wide array of infiltration equipment on his person at all times. His cybernetic arm is approximately 1.5x stronger than the average arm, and he tends to use it with his sword to give it an extra oomph. This, however, is his off-hand. When he switches the sword to his right, it's to combine its effectiveness with either the blade stored on top of the arm's wrist, or the sleeping poison darts he stores beneath the wrist.

Daria travels a bit lighter, generally carrying food, water, and a healthy supply of iron ingots in her bag.

History: The twins were born 19 years ago, just in time to grow up in a world where the old ways were stomped beneath the iron boot of the Republic. At the age of 9, they watched the world's hero die, and the world descend into chaos as the Republic conquered everything in their way. Both of their parents, a Fire Nation officer and an Earth Kingdom city-slicker died in the conflict, leaving them orphaned. However, both of them were exceptionally bright, determined children. They resolved that the order really, really sucked, and they preferred the old way. So, they would wreck everything in their path until it came back.

They honed their skills, playing off each other's strengths to become a powerhouse duo capable of breaking into and then breaking apart just about any target they selected. Around the age of 16 they made their first strike, modeling their appearance after a combination of all four of the old nations. They picked targets based on notability, location, and general importance, be it practical or symbolic. Then they struck. Dirk would sneak in and eliminate the guards, then Daria would use her Metalbending to bring down the entire structure in a collapsing cataclysm of smoke and debris. They've been doing this for three years now, with little long-term success. Branded as anarchists, traitors, and terrorists, they remain in hiding, moving from place to place and wreaking havoc.

200 years later, right? How do you feel about an air-bender? I figure Tenzin had 4 kids, and they probably mated, with at least one child per the family.

Name: Luckard Bates
Age: doesn't really know, but reasonably young, somewhere between 19 and 24
Gender:Male
Bender/Non-Bender: Waterbender

Appearance:
Alan weighs in at less than 150 lbs., a fact pinpointed even farther as his frame towers over most men, at 6'3". His hair is the darkest shade of black possible and hangs wildly down to his shoulders, sometimes grimy, other times cleaner than the clearest crystal. Underneath his shock of hair are his amber tinted eyes, hidden behind his shades.

He has an affinity for the color red, as he's hand-dyed his pants, quite badly, as lack of quality supplies in the slums doesn't really lend itself to well-done dyed pants. He also has a thick red velvet overcoat he stole from another man that doesn't move from place to place. His shoes are heavy work boots, the one thing on him that doesn't have a single hole. His shirt can change daily, but two colors, red and black, are the only constant in terms of his clothing. He keeps his sunglasses on at all times, he considers this non-negotiable unless something big goes down.

Personality:
A bit kooky by most people's standards, he has the fortune(at the misfortune of others most often) to spout seemingly random nonsense, but it is often humorous. When he actually gets angry however, the randomness may not cut off, but he will become serious in place of his normal "wackiness". His basic personality is having fun as much as he can basically, but finds equal enjoyment ramming people through walls as reading a good newspaper comic. However, he absolutely abhors anyone that makes more money than him. Which is most people that actually have a regular job. And he is actually quite sane, despite what many might think.

Skills:
A very strong Waterbender, Lucard has heard of Bloodbending, but has yet to find anyone willing/able to teach it. He's well-versed in street fighting when his Bending fails him, not so much an organized method of fighting as a seemingly random style of kicks, punches, elbows, and headbutts. None of which lend well to his physical form, even though he's stronger than he looks. He also knows how to throw a knife reasonably straight.

Outside of combat, he knows how to scavenge on the streets better than most, having grown up on them. His skills also include persuasion through uncomfortableness as well as minor street notoriety as a man not to be trifled with, if only because of his presence. He can pick simple locks, such as those seen on lockers, bathroom doors, and hope chests.

Gear:
Two bags of water strapped to his back, underneath the coat. He carries a half-dozen throwing knives on each leg, strapped as well. a set of lockpicks is in one of the pockets without holes most times. The last thing he carries around is a pair of scissors, never know when they might come in handy.

History:
Luckard was born an orphan, a not uncommon occurrence in the present day. He spent his first few years in a government orphanage, before being booted out because of the lack of room. He turned to crime quite early on, first breaking in windows for food and money, then pickpocketing when he needed it to survive. He came into contact with a member of one of the shadowy underground's up-and-comers, a Ms. Lucile Bates. While attempting to pickpocket the woman, he was caught, but rather than kill or reprimand the boy, she saw his potential while still at a young age as a tool. She herself was a Waterbender, and saw some of the Water Tribe blood in his appearance, and was determined to find the Waterbending spark in him. It didn't take long into training before he outstripped her in terms of how fast he learned things in comparison. He took her surname, and changed his "given" name from the orphanage, Luke, into Lukard, as it sounded more menacing to his ears. She rose through the ranks of the underworld and he along with her as he was considered her child, if not by blood, then by ties. This served to leave a spot in her defenses, though until her death at the hands of a government raid, no one dared challenge the boy, as he was her not-so-secret weapon. It was known he was learning Waterbending, but not how strong he was in the art.

They rose up, within a few years having carved out a few blocks known as their neighborhood, where their word was law whenever the Republic wasn't out in force and were in the process of expansion. He may not have known the particulars of their enterprise, but he did know it was all illegal, as he was approaching the age when he was planning on expanding their borders. Then they got the attention of the Republic with a raid on a routine political prisoner caravan passing near their territory.

The government attacked their complex in the middle of the night, while Luckard and his "mother"/master were asleep. He in his room, her in her office where she took care of deals with other gangs and individuals. She was overpowered by the sheer numbers thrown against her, that was when Luckard awoke to the sounds of yelling and Bending Battles. He was barely able to reach his bottle of training water and defend himself as they burst through the door to find a teenager throwing icicles at their faces, while not killing any of them, he did manage to fight off three that came through that door. He escaped and has hated the Republic in every sense of the word since.

His skills have helped with many operations throughout the City. From simple ambushes of guard and police patrols to minor break-ins of government controlled buildings. He has a small reputation with various gangs and organizations that operate out from under the Republic's purview.

The horrible history is now done.

Airbending is back, more or less in full strength. They're less common than any of the other three types of benders, but they're still around.

Ryhno, use your head. Bloodbending is literally the most powerful Bending power there is. Sure, only usable on the full moon, but when the full moon is out it is an I Win button for any fight, a completely unstoppable instant death maneuver on anything except another Bloodbender or the Avatar.

CJ, your characters sound less like heroes and more like terrorists. Even the Resistance wouldn't want anything to do with people who just break into buildings, kill everyone inside, and then tear the thing down, that's not helping anyone, that's just mass murder. Besides that, ripping an entire building down is a little bit excessive, I don't think even Toph Bei Fong could have done that on her own, at least not in any reasonable span of time. The City isn't without defenses, any attack that took longer than a few minutes would have serious threats crawling up your ass.

Your other character has problems as well, as you describe him as being effectively immune to all Bending arts because he's just so fast. One, that's too powerful and two, it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

I'd beg to differ about me not using my head, but you not using yours. Who controls night and day in this rp? What part of the month it is, and most importantly, in this case, who is it that controls whether or not a full moon's even out while we're doing our shadowrunning? Pretty sure it won't be me...

...Yeah, kinda. That was the way it naturally developed fleshing out the idea. Not everybody who holds a grudge with the Republic is going to be a noble paragon. They're bitter, angry kids with a lot of power and an inkling on how to use it. They've never been actively part of a resistance, but they would probably tone down their rather extreme actions if somebody proved to them that another way got results.

They'd probably be all for backing the Avatar, if one was ever found, since their whole deal is basically championing the old nations and ways.

that's not helping anyone, that's just mass murder.
If told that, they'd likely respond "Let us know if we do anything even slightly worse than what these guys have already done." They're fans of the whole pay evil unto evil deal, though they see it more as brutal vengeance.

Besides that, ripping an entire building down is a little bit excessive, I don't think even Toph Bei Fong could have done that on her own, at least not in any reasonable span of time.
It's really rather simple if you think about it. While Daria is a powerhouse, she doesn't try to outright smash the building. She goes to the bottom-most levels and yanks the metal out of the building's structure, basically taking away all its structural integrity. The whole thing collapses pretty easy after that, even if it takes a couple minutes. Once that's done, they have plenty of time to hightail it before the authorities show up.

Your other character has problems as well, as you describe him as being effectively immune to all Bending arts because he's just so fast. One, that's too powerful and two, it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense.
It's not an accurate description of his abilities, that's the aspiration of his style. Obviously, nobody's that fast, but he is fast, because he's trained relentlessly to be that way. Because, as far as he can see, that's the only way for a guy like him to even keep up with Benders. If he just trained himself into a brute, he'd be too slow to avoid getting roasted, or frozen, or just crushed between a couple of boulders. Think of him as similar to the Blue Spirit in style. Sticks to the shadows, strikes hard and fast, so that normally superior opponents can't keep up.

Name: Riku Monsin

Age: 26

Gender: Male

Appearance: About medium height, 5'11, and a thin but muscular build. He has fair skin, with saucer like green eyes and sharp features. He has messy but clean blonde hair and recently developed stubble. His usual attire is a wine colored trench coat, with a black undershirt, dark blue jeans and plain white shoes.

Personality: He leans on the eccentric, usually going a mile a minute with his thoughts. He still manages a sense of humor, and has some wisdom, though he doesn't like playing mediator. He tends to dislike people in general, preferring solitude with his own thoughts.

Skills: He is, or rather was, an inventor. He helped develop cybernetics into what they are today, though he has some less savory inventions the Republic forced him to create. He also tends to be analytical. On top of that, he is a rather skilled air bender, mastering the air scooter around the same time Aang did.

Gear: He doesn't need much, and doesn't have much. His only weapon is one he developed himself, a pistol of sorts (resembles a flintlock) that requires his airbending to even use.

History:
And the history I'll get back to, if only to follow the trend :|

Noted, Ryhno. Bloodbending is still prohibited.

CJ, I don't see any mention in her backstory about her being trained in controlled building destruction. Isn't it pretty likely that the first time she tried that she'd have gone too far and dropped the building on her own head?

Look, guys, this RP is not going to start in the next few hours or even this weekend most likely. Take your time to finish the bio before you post it.

Sorry, I didn't think I needed to get that specific. I basically just left it implied that through their teenage years they would train the skills they'd need to wage this kind of war, which would include Daria's demolition capabilities. And normally yeah, that's be a problem, but I doubt they would start off trying to take down skyscrapers. Or start off inside the buildings, for that matter. It would have been a gradual process, starting by working on figuring out how basic engineering works. She'd practice on smaller buildings that no one would miss to get the technique down, and once she could do those more or less effortlessly they'd scale up, until she was ready to bring down the bigger buildings.

She'd have started doing the jobs from the inside only by the time that she'd gotten very good at it, and the buildings as they were were simply too large to take down from the exterior. And even if there were a few mishaps, her bending would generally permit her a way to shield herself from any severe damage.

I'm still pretty iffy on ripping entire buildings down. If it takes any serious amount of time at all between Dirk attacking and Daria ripping the Republic is going to send in its own forces, including their own Metalbenders.

Name: Juri Surothi

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Appearance: Juri stands at 5'6 and 112 pounds, with a very light build atypical of an earth bender. She has tanned complexion, dirty blond hair, and pale blue eyes. She typically wears turquoise pants and shirts with a dark blue vest, and a brown desert scarf to cover her mouth.

Personality: She's incredibly happy and enthusiastic about her job. She very rarely loses her cool when on the job. Even when not terminating targets, she enjoys a good bit of chaos and messes with the minds of every person she meets. When but into a battle, she tears through opposition with sadistic glee/

Skills: Juri is a sand bender. Although, she has refined it to an even further degree, where she can also manipulate glass, which is created from heated sand. She can shatter glass around her and send it at her opponents to cut them

Gear: Juri wears a large, glasswork arm band on her left arm that she uses during combat. She also has a knife on her belt for emergencies.

History: Juri grew up in the deserts, where both the primary martial arts, and mode of transportation, was sandbending. Her family was in the business of making artistic glass sculptures by having firebenders help them in superheating glass and welding it into shapes.

One day, when trying this art for herself, she realized she could break apart the finished pieces and move them about as she did with sand. This came in very useful when she was called into fights. Every time she employed this ability, she laughed gleefully with every shard of glass she put into another bender.

She was eventually tracked down by the police of the region for putting so many people in the hospital, and had to flee to one of the major cities of the republic. There, she took jobs as a political assassin for a series of fundamentalist groups opposing the Rebuplic armies.

Working on a sheet, but there are some questions I wanted to ask first:

1) How high up are we/can we be in the Resistances's heirarchy?

2) What's the structure of said organization?

3)If I make one of my characters skills strictly combat, can his other skill be more social/intellectual?

4)Cybernetic mecha-robo underground prize fighting Arena? Yay or nay?

1: I'd prefer it if you were all fairly low level. Basically, I want you all to be active in the field. Most of the Resistance is anyway.

2: It's a fairly loose organization. Resistance members identify each other by a number of code phrases and hand signs. There's also a marker that Resistance members and Resistance-friendly establishments will wear or put up somewhere, a large, blue pointing arrow, signifying the Avatar. As far as the Resistance is aware, the Republic is not aware of this sigil's true meaning yet.

No one person knows everything that goes on with the Resistance. This has resulted in the organization being nearly invincible - you cannot slay a snake when it has a million heads - but it also has reduced their effectiveness, as large-scale coordination is nearly impossible. While there is believed to be a single overarching leader of the Resistance, no one any of you has met has seen this person, or if they have they won't admit it.

3: Sure.

4: Walkers and Armored Units are pretty restricted to the military, and if the private sector got a hold of one it would be more likely to end up in the hands of the Resistance than an underground prizefighting ring. That said, there is a good bit of illegal/questionably legal Bending tournaments and whatnot.
