[HEADING=1]Book: The Search
Chapter 1: Sozin's Comet
[/HEADING]

Tao awoke to the slamming of a fist beside his bunk. "Get up you scum! You still have a sentence to serve!"
Opening his eyes and standing disorientated, the eyes of his 34 year old commander Kanan gleamed at him. Suddenly his expression changed to a smile, holding out his hand to Tao. "And I plan to make that a life sentence." Relieved, Tao returned the handshake. Kanan came from a similar story to Tao, though his family were poor, and was forced into a young life of petty theft, rather than a rich boy having a bit of fun. The man took Tao under his wing when he first joined the military, almost like a father figure, showing him the ropes.

"So what's the occasion this time? Another bending lap around the city?" Tao sighed to his commander.
"Oh no, something much more important, we're going to meet the general, along with a few hopeful soldiers you know."
At a loss for words, he stumbled in thought, if the general wants to personally meet with a few soldiers, it's either really good, or really bad.

"Sheil!" Kanan yelled across the barracks.
A man of 23 standing at 6'6" with bulging muscles rose from a bunk, standing at attention. Sheil had been in the military for a few years, he wasn't an earth bender, but he could still smash rocks with his head.
"Sir!?" he yelled in respect.
"You're coming with us to meet the general."
Sheil glanced between Kanan and Tao.
"Yes sir!"

"Ajala! Bipin!" He yelled through the barracks once again.
A beautiful earth kingdom girl of 18, and a boy similar to Tao, at 17, if not a bit shorter and a tad bulkier, stood to attention. A smile and slight blush came across Tao's face at the calling of their names. Bipin was also from Gaoling, from another wealthy family, a boy who loved to joke around and play tricks on others. He had joined around the same time as Tao, and was his best friend in the city. Whereas for some time Tao had harbored a crush for Ajala.

"You four and I are going to meet with the general, this is very important." Kanan collected himself, before bending down to point at Bipin.
"So be on your best, you got that soldiers!?"
"Sir!" The four of them stood at attention.
"Well I mean, it can't be that important if we're bringing this spaz along." Bipin commented, pointing at Tao, Ajala giggled at the remark, before quickly recollecting herself as Kanan didn't seem impressed.
"Just please, don't do anything stupid" Kanan said as he slapped his forehead.

The four were following Kanan to the military headquaters. Sheil walking in a proper manner, followed by Ajala, and finally by Biping and Tao fidgeting in the back.
However there was no tomfoolery when they entered general Satish's office.

"Thank you Kanan." He said, gesturing for the five of them to be seated.
"As you all well know, I would not have called you here if the matter was not urgent or dire."
He took a deep breath before continuing.
"You may or may not know, that recently the avatar was confirmed. A young airbender of 12 years named Aang, from the Southern Temple."
"But sir. I thought the Avatar was only ever announced at the age of 16?" Bipin interrupted, instantly receiving a slap to the side of the head by Tao in a way to state 'Shut up!'
"Yes..." General Satish collected himself.
"You are correct Bipin, but the air nomad leaders felt it was important to start his training now, due to the recent threats of war from the fire nation, which you all know of too well."
"Bastard fire nation" Sheil muttered under his breath.
"It is not the fire nation, but their leaders you should be angered by." Satish commented.
"Anyway, he was sent to to Eastern Air Temple. But he fled in cowardice."
General Satish stood, arms crossed behind his back, looking over the group.
"The only way to resolve this coming war, is to have a fully fledged avatar, even if we need to force him to co-operate" He clenched his fist, slamming it to the table, before speaking directly to them.
Commander Kanan and the rest of you are going to find this boy, and bring him to the Eastern Air Temple. I have chosen each of you specifically for your unique set of skills."

He began to talk to each of the soldiers directly.
"Commander Kanan, you will lead this group, providing your tactical prowess and master earth bending abilities, there will be no commanding officer, however I will keep in contact, and you will remain under my authority, is that clear?"
Kanan nodded "Of course sir. We'll find him and have him prepared in no time."
"Sheil will assist the team with his great combat skills. Bipin, your knowledge of the avatar and the history surrounding him may come to use, I also trust your earthbending abilities. Ajala, hopefully your skills in disguise, deception, and general guile will get the lot of you out of any sticky situation. And finally Tao, your earth bending skill and... interesting connection to the earth will help you to locate the avatar, remember, air benders tread very lightly, so don't lose concentration when you get down there."
"You are dismissed, and leave in one hour, you have access to any armaments you may need, "
"Sir!" the group stood in attention, before filing out of the general's office.

They gathered the supplies they would need for the trip, and were each on their own Ostrich Horse, heading south from Taku. As they left, Tao looked back, crossing eyes with a young man in an orange tunic, with a monk-like straw hat covering most of his face, a glider on his back. Tao turned back to the group, when he went to double check the young man he saw standing in the outside of the city, he was gone. He shrugged it off, patting Jojo his Ostrich Horse, he felt like this was going to be a great journey, and maybe he could even visit Gaoling on the way there.

Days passed, Tao was becoming more and more emotionally attached to the group, he was thinking of asking Ajala out for a night, but Bipin gave him some good advice, to save it until after they finished the mission. They came to a mining village, north west of Omashu, travelling to the inn they each sat down for a drink.
"We're making great progress." Kanan complemented the group.
"Another week or two we'll be near the Southern Air Temple, then we can begin our search."
"The Avatar probably wouldn't have gone too far." Sheil stated, before getting a quick hushing from Kanan.
A few eyes from a group of men from the side of the inn perked up.
"Don't name it around here, we don't know who could be here, or whom they serve." Kanan scolded him in a silent tone.
"My apologies." Sheil hung his head as he talked. "But I do think we should look between the two temples." His voice was practically a whisper.
"Agreed." Kanan replied, before returning to his mead.
Tao turned his head to the group in the corner, they quickly looked down to avert attention, he could feel their heart rates increase.
When they came to their rooms Tao spoke up. "I don't trust this place, they were clearly interested in our conversation, perhaps we should take turns staying up?" Bipin sighed as he said that "But I need my beauty sleep!". Ajala placed her palm to her face "You could sleep for months and that wouldn't help..." The three of them laughed, before Kanan interrupted.
"You make a good point Tao, we'll do an hour and a half each, then we leave.

The group awoke to Bipin sitting asleep on the chair, Kanan gave him a hard slap on the back of the head. "This is why I gave you last shift, ya lazy git!" The group however had no problems over the night, and continued their journey south. Taking a boat across, they continued, planning to rest when they reach Omashu.

They never would reach Omashu however...

"Okay, the Cave of Two Lovers are a couple hours ahead." Kanan stated to the group.
"Lucky we have Tao here." Bipin laughed before even delivering the joke. "This player has tons of experience navigating that place, am I right?." Bipin gave him a friendly punch to the arm.
"Ugh, yeah I can navigate it, no sweat." Tao replied.
"Are you going to have Ajala help you navigate it?" Sheil spoke up, causing the two to quickly look at eachother blushing, before turning back to him in anger. "No!" They both yelled at him, as he put his hands in the air "Woh, woh, okay guys chill out" He laughed in his deep tone.

They came to a forest pass. Ahead in the distance, there was conversation they couldn't hear.
"Is the blasting jelly prepared?"
"Yes sir."
"On my signal."
The group came to a small clearing in the trees, the land seemed to have been dug up in some sort of way.
"Tao, get off your Ostrich Horse and check the ground around here." Kanan commanded.
Getting off of Jojo, Tao approached the ground in the clearing.
"I can feel something here, it's been... Something's been put into the soil here."
He approached to get a better look before hearing a strange bird call, followed by a disturbance in the ground.
"AMBUSH!" Tao screamed as he pulled the earth in front of him to protect himself from... 'BOOM!' The blasting jelly around the group detonated, Tao protected himself from the initial blast, however, it caused the group to fall from their mounts, giving the assassins a chance to strike the group. Suddenly a large squad jumped out from the trees, all dressed in fire nation gear. A blast of fire came upon the group, disorientating them, they weren't that easy to take down however.
Sheil jumped from the group, a large spear in hand, sweeping two of them off of their feet in a surprise attack from the smoke, burns up and down his body.
Taking a couple of flips backward, Ajala stomped the ground, bringing a boulder from the ground, before spin kicking it in one of the assassins faces, knocking him to the ground.
Bipin formed a sort of boulder around himself to protect him from the flames, before finally punching the pieces in separate directions, striking several of the assassins.
Kanan stomped his foot to the ground, blasting three of the benders into the trees.
Tao adjusted his movements, sliding his feet along the ground, submerging two of the assassins legs in earth.
Despite their training, the attack took it's toll on the four, causing them to stumble, and shriek in pain.
The assassins pushed their advantage, increasing their attack.
One of the assassins grabbed Ajala from behind in a choke hold, a distinct snapping sound could be heard as they broke her neck.
A few of the assassins began engulfing Bipin in fire, Tao attempted to assist him by chucking several boulders at the fire benders, however there were too many, and finally one of the assassins jumped from behind the group through the flames, piercing his chest with a spear.
"No!" Tao screamed, continuing his volley of attacks, smashing one of the assassins in the head with a well placed earth spike, knocking him unconscious, and submerging another to the point at which only his head was above the earth, continuing to spout fire from his mouth.
Sheil jumped at two armed assassins, thrusting his spear into one, whilst slamming his fist into the other, he trod toward the other assassin with his spear in hand, before two archers positioned in the trees began to open fire upon him. Two arrows pierced his body, his movement slowed, but he continued toward the assassin, bloody and burnt. Another arrow pierced his thigh, he submerged his spear into the assassin he knocked to the ground, before gathering the strength to throw it at one of the archers, directly hitting him, a loud 'thud' heard as he hit the ground. The next arrow, however, strikes him in the center of his head, causing him to fall.

Kanan placed himself on top of a pillar, continuing to launch a couple of fire benders into the trees, engulfing a few more in earth traps. But even this master earth-bender fell victim to the assassins attacks, the ground rumbled as he cried in rage, Tao was still attempting to take them out, but it was clear they were focusing their assaults on the others. Noticing the archer coming to take another shot, Tao smashed the earth around the base of the tree, causing him to fall to the ground, which at that height caused a crack in his bones. The relentless fire did not stop, Kanan put one knee and a fist to the ground, unable to hold himself up, he was still shaking the earth, but the assassins were well trained, and were able to dodge his further attacks. "Tao..." He called out in pain.
Tao observed the situation, Ajala's body was on the floor, her neck twisted, Bipin was still fidgeting on the ground, the spear lodged in his chest, Sheil had fallen face first into the mud, his body now a bleeding husk of burns, and now Kanan the master earth bender was falling to their attacks.

Tears streamed from his eyes "No!" He yelled before a strange feeling overwhelmed him, his eyes turned black, his body was as if it was being controlled. The assassins finally struck the last blow on Kanan, causing him to fall to his knees, his head looking to the ground.
Pieces of earth flew toward Tao, his body was immersed in it, as if it were his armor. The benders began to open fire upon him, but it did nothing to his state, upon striking him with their spears and swords, they broke on the earth covering him. Stomping to the ground the several remaining assassins were submerged in the earth, by this point they were pleading with him to stop, but remorse was no longer something he knew. He buried a couple of them, with a few movements of his hands. He dragged his feet along the ground, causing large pillars to strike a few more of the assassins, large 'thuds' and 'cracks' could be heard as they strike the surrounding forest with huge force. Moving his hand in an upward direction, a larger hand of earth came from beneath a couple of the assassins, clenching his fist, they were crushed. One assassin remained, their leader, Tao submerged him into a box of earth, the walls of which slowly came to close. "Please, show mercy, I can give you anything, information on our movements, the comet, anything!". His cries fell on deaf ears, as his body was crushed by the earth.

Finally feeling the foes were dispatched, Tao felt a great stress on his body, causing him to fall back onto a nearby rock, falling into a deep sleep. Jojo came from the bushes, nestling himself next to Tao as he slept.

Sticks crunched under Nauja's boots crunched as she hurried through the woods, following the sounds of a battle in the distance. Her pet sugar glider clung tightly to her shoulder, squeaking nervously.

"I know, I know, but judging by the sounds coming from this direction, something big must be going down..." Miki just squeaked again and ducked down into the small bag hanging from her shoulder.

Suddenly, the sounds of battle stopped, and she quickened her pace through the woods, but by then it was already over. Nauja came to a halt as she came into a clearing and a horrible sight. Bodies lay strewn across the ground, which was ripped up in some places and scorched in others.

By the spirits... what happened here?

Her stormy gray eyes scanned the grisly scene, trying to put together what happened. Most of the bodies were wearing Fire Nation armor, so there must have been an ambush, but it didn't look like anyone survived...

But then her attention fell on a strange sight: a young man lying against a rock with an Ostrich Horse lying next to him. And unless she missed her guess, he was still breathing...

Despite her better judgment, she hurried over to him. "Hey. Hey! Are you okay?" Nauja let one hand drop to the waterskin at her waist, in case he needed healing.

The sudden approach of another caused Jojo to react suddenly, standing to his feet and taking a few nips at the girl, letting out a defensive screech.
Quickly noting her intentions however, he let out a sad moan, resting back to face Tao, prodding him sadly with his beak.

There were a few burns across the boy's face, nothing major, but it was clear that he didn't have the energy to respond, looking almost battered and beaten physically and emotionally by whatever had occurred in the clearing of now ash and scarred land.

Again Jojo rose, screeching at a patch in the bush, the bush rustled before an arrow flew out of it, followed by a man instantly running from it, into the forest. The arrow broke against the rock beside Tao, the reaction had clearly thrown off his shot. Though he was too far to properly be observed, it was clear he was fit and well trained.

The Ostrich Horse gave a small moan at Nauja, followed by prodding Tao, as if pleading for her help.

Nauja jumped back from the Ostrich Horse's nips, clearly intent on protecting it's master. After a moment, it turned its attention on the boy lying against the rock.

It was clear that he was pretty beaten up, but before Nauja could do anything, an arrow flew out towards him. She spun around in time to see a man running of into the woods. She began making a movement to follow him, but the Ostrich Horse's distress made her pause.

"Alright, alright," she muttered, "Just get down, will you?" She bent down beside the young man, helping him to his feet so she could put him on the Ostrich Horse's back.

"Can you hear me?" she asked, "My name's Nauja, I think I can help you get to the nearest town. Are you in any pain?" she kept asking questions, hoping to get some answers.

Tao's hands loosely gripped the reins of Jojo, his head hung down, though he was still unwell, he gathered the energy to respond.
"N-Nau... Who?" He answered in confusion.
"Pain? No... Why would I..." he let out a short cry, regaining feeling in his body, he wasn't in major distress, but it still wasn't comforting.

He turned his head to the side, observing the scarred land.
"What happened? Did we find him? Where's Kanan?"
Again he let out a small yelp as he adjusted his body position.

"I think I just need some rest, sir."

Fire Nation Assassin's Report

Man how am I going to explain this to the admiral...
After an hour or so he reached the outpost just south of the coast from which the group traversed by boat.
Bursting through the door, he bowed before the admiral.

"What is the meaning of this? Explain yourself welp!" The admiral tightened his fist in anger at the intrusion.
"My apologies sir, I come with news about the ambush, on the earth nation group from Taku hunting the avatar."
"Well?" The admiral took a seat, extending his hand out to tell him to do the same.

Oh man... Here it comes... Flameo.
"Well..." The sweat dripped from the archers forehead, slowly trickling down his cheek.
"The ambush was going according to plan, they were completely unaware, we took out four of the five units with ease, even their commander, who was a master earthbender."
The admiral smiled for a short while, before changing tone to the realisation of what he had just mentioned.
"And... the fifth?" His tone was beginning to bend toward frustration.
"It wasn't like anything I'd ever seen sir, our fire bounced right off of him, our weapons shattered by every strike..."
The admiral slammed his fist on the table, several pieces of paper flew around the room.
"And your commander? The rest of the men? Where is my son!?"

Small tears began to jerk from his face, before collecting himself to give the archer a chance to explain.
"He... Some of the men were jack hammered into the woods, others buried alive, again, it was something I'd never seen before."
"AND WHAT OF MY SON!?"
The archer turned his head in shame
"He was crushed, admiral, I..." The admiral interrupted
"Why are you here in front of me then!? Did you flee like a coward!?"

The archer put his arms out in front of his face. "No, I was knocked unconscious, when I woke the earth bender was sleeping on a nearby rock, I steadied my shot but, there was a girl there, she caused his Ostrich Horse to get in the way of my shot... Give me another chance, I wi..." The admiral interrupted him once again, but with a strange smile across his face.
"Good. You are dismissed, I will expect your resignation on my desk by the morning."
The archer's expression was of shock, but quickly changed to one of respect, he knew not to question the admiral, regardless of how it may benefit him. He bowed to the general, a pained expression in his face, and continued to leave the room in shame.

"Bring me the courier bird, I know exactly who to notify to help me with this."
"Yes Admiral Lee" his assistant stated.
as he left to retrieve the messenger hawk, the Admiral began to write a note.

Dear Admiral Chan.
I humbly request you to send me a group of five of your best trackers and soldiers.
I require these men in order to locate an earthbender who you allowed to leave Taku in a group on a search to find the missing Avatar.
I also hear you have a soldier there who is able to deal with benders, make sure he is in this group.
Unless you wish for the generals to hear of your failure, you will do this for me, without question.

Sincerely.

Admiral Lee.
The admiral rolled up the note, placed it in the messenger hawk's, and sent it off to the Fire Nation Outpost near Taku.

"None but I, may have the pleasure of avenging my son. These savages will pay for what they've done."
His body began to heat to such a degree that the chair and desk around him began to singe.

It was still evening, and Commander Shen came to see Kajiya in the smithy, a note in his hand.
The Commander handed Kajiya the note, it was addressed from Admiral Chan.

"The Admiral told me no more than to give this to you, it's an invitation to meet him in his quarters, I wouldn't keep him waiting, if I were you."

With that the Commander left the smithy, leaving Kajiya alone with the note.

Kajiya.
I request your presence immediately for an important task.
Admiral Chan.
The note seemed hastily written, or perhaps that's just his usual handwriting.

Kajiya was alone in the smithy, well as alone as he could what with Akuto being there and sleeping on a nearby worktable. He was busy putting the finishing touches on a Liuyedao model of sword that Admiral Chan had requested upon Kajiya's arrival at the outpost. At first he didn't hear Commander Shen enter the smithy but when he turned round to rest the completed sword on a stand, Kajiya saw that the Commander had come baring a note for him from Admiral Chan himself.

"The Admiral told me no more than to give this to you, it's an invitation to meet him in his quarters, I wouldn't keep him waiting, if I were you."

"Indeed." Kajiya said with a half smile. "We all know of the good Admiral's zero tolerance policy on tardiness; and with good timing as well, I just finished the sword he requested a few days, I hope it meets to his expectations." He then added, noticing that the Commander had long since gone which made the black smith sigh.

"No patience in some people." He quietly remarked upon getting up from his workstation and fetching the scabbard that would accompany whilst reading the note, it appeared that the Admiral had an assignment for Kajiya. It was at this point which Akuto woke up from his nap, yawning as he stretched his paws out.

"Enjoy your sleep Akuto? Listen boy, I have to leave you on your own for a little bit, it appears I have a date with the Admiral." Kajiya said showing the hastily written note to the fire ferret before placing the note in his pocket. After finding the appropriate scabbard, he gave the blade a few practice swings to test it's balance and weight before sheathing it. On his way out, Kajiya gave a little scratch behind Akuto's ear, receiving a complacent growl in return.

Arriving at the Admiral's quarters with sword in hand, he knocked on the door.

"Admiral Chan, it's Kajiya, you requested to see me sir?"

Admiral Chan
"It is a custom to bow before your superiors when greeting them" Chan stated as Kajiya entered the room.
"Ahh, but I see you've brought me the blade I requested, I did not expect it so soon, but this is not the reason I called for you."
The Admiral motioned Kajiya to lay the sword before him, he began to expect the craftsmanship of it on his table, whilst giving a less attentive hand wave to Kajiya, motioning him to take a seat.

In the room there were four others sitting beside Kajiya, some he may know personally, or just through gossip.
Kajiya sat in the middle of them, the others could be recognised left to right.

The first was Ding, a small bulky man (5'5") around 30, an expert of the duel blade, and uses his firebending as an extension of this. He had a long beard and no mustache.

Then the brothers Commander Ran, and Commander Shaw. Both aged 26, standing at 6'0". Ran was a master of tracking, his skills could be compared to that of a sneershou. He's followed by his pet Foxdog, whom has a powerful ability to track a scent. Ran is an expert fire bender, yet also very agile.
Shaw, was a master navigator, renown for discovering some of the newer found islands in the eastern front. He was also trained in the art of interrogation. Shaw is an expert fire bender, and is known for using guile to achieve an early advantage.

The last was Morishita, a master archer, whom is close to being named a 'Yuyan Archer'. Aged 24, a medium height (5'10") and medium build, he has a goatee with a pointed beard at the chin. He is also a master of survival, being known to have survived in the forest alone for several months.

"Now I am sure you're each wondering why I have called you in to my esteemed office." The Admiral began.
"As you each have most likely heard, the avatar was recently named to be an air bender, in one of the air temples. However it seems our men in the city of Taku have missed some important information, as a team of earth benders recently set out to greet this avatar."
A long sigh withdrew from the Admiral's breath.
"The fact that this happened under my order, means it is my responsibility to have this fixed, the last thing we need is a group of earth kingdom soldiers around those air temples."
The admiral pointed on the map on his desk, small figurines showing the positions of fire nation soldiers at certain locations close to each temple.

"So I am sending you all to Admiral Lee, stationed north west of the city of Omashu." The Admiral pointed to the location, whilst looking at Shaw.
"You will take three Eel Hounds, leaving under the cover of night. They are the fastest way to travel over land and water, so it should only take you several hours to reach Lee."

"Now if there are no questions, you are dismissed."

The gentle winds rushed passed Anish as he hung from the wings of his glider, sailing silently through the sky. Obscured by the glare of the sun the red kite made the perfect reconnaissance vehicle, with those below presumably unaccustomed to the Air Nomad's device, they would likely dismiss whatever they did see as an abnormally large messenger hawk.

He had been following their caravan for over a week now, shadowing their every twist and turn as they tried to avoid attention, only to lose them now under the cover of the forest. Typical.
Anish knew that it would be difficult to keep pace with the group whilst still maintaining enough distance to conceal his presence, and yet he had chosen to follow them nonetheless. He had known it was only a matter of time after the rumours of the Avatar's disappearance spread for someone in the Kingdom to seek out the boy, the only question remained- who would find him first?
The issue lay with the fact that Anish himself was no intelligence broker, nor happened to have connections to those who were. Depending on whether the boy had travelled by foot or Air Bison, he could be anywhere in the Earth Kingdom, or even further afield.

Yet it seemed that fate had a path in mind, for soon after pondering his course of action in a local tavern in Taku, Anish heard tell that a small unit of soldiers was hastily preparing to leave the city under the guise of a peacekeeping mission. Upon closer inspection of the unit's supplies, it did not take long for him to guess the group's true intentions, something made all the more transparent from the fact the group was headed by a renowned Earthbending commander. Anish therefore resigned to follow the group, confident that even if they knew nothing more than he did, he could at least sabotage their efforts if need be, and ensure the safe recovery of the Avatar himself.

I could have sworn they headed this way...

'BOOM!'

His dejection was short lived, as the explosive sound reverberated through the forest, the shock-wave rippling through the air as trees cracked and burned, smoke rising from what he identified as a small clearing.

"What the...? Thunder...?"

Without a further moment's hesitation, he dove, his glider equalling the speed of any bird of prey, before pulling up within meters of the canopy. Withdrawing the glider's wings, Anish twirled the staff between his fingers to briefly hover, before setting himself down silently on the limb of a tree overlooking the clearing.

It was then that he saw the carnage unfold. Earth and Flame clashed, as men and women traded blows, and crimson stained the ground.

"No!"

He saw a boy not too apart from his own age cry out in anguish, before the very earth around him seemed to respond to his cries, moving with a singular purpose: destroy.

It was over in seconds. As the boy's armour fell to the ground, so did he. As soon as Anish was about to clamber down to examine him, a figure emerged to sprint to his aid. A girl clad in blue. He didn't recognize her as part of the boy's unit.

"Was she following them as well?" he wondered.

Reluctantly Anish jumped down from the tree, using his Airbending to cushion his fall and land without a sound. He approached the couple slowly, cautious to not startle the oversized bird at their side.

The snap of a twig caused Nauja to spin around in surprise. "Who's there?!" She demanded, fully aware she couldn't fight carrying the young man.

There was another man approaching him, an Airbender, judging by his garb. Nauja relaxed slightly, aware that Airbenders were the more peaceful sort.

"The battle's over, but as long as you're here, you might as well help me get this guy to the closest village," she said, hoping he'd stay to give her a hand. She carefully readjusted the body hanging over her shoulder.

"I'm Nauja, by the way, who are you?"

The unexpected noise caused the girl to spin around in surprise. She seemed to let down her guard when she saw his garb; something that would have been ill-advised had Anish actually wanted to harm her.

"The battle's over, but as long as you're here, you might as well help me get this guy to the closest village"

It was only then that Anish noticed that she had the boy's unconscious body over her shoulder, and whilst being capable of carrying him, the way she shifted his body seemed to suggest that she wasn't the most comfortable with the idea of lugging him all the way to town on her lonesome.

Taking the unconscious body in his own arms, Anish cautiously laid the boy across his mount after showing the bird he meant no harm, taking it's reins in hand as he began to lead it slowly along the path towards town.

"I'm Nauja, by the way, who are you?" inquired the girl, clearly suspicious after witnessing the aftermath of the bloody battle.

"Sorry, I'd prefer not to say. Do you mind me asking what you're doing here and how you know this one?"

"Sorry, I'd prefer not to say. Do you mind me asking what you're doing here and how you know this one?"

Nauja shrugged, and began following him. "I was passing through when I came across the battlefield. This guy is still alive, so I was planning to take him somewhere safe when you stopped by. That's pretty much it."

She glanced at the boy's motionless form. "Still, I can't help but wonder what happened..."

"I was passing through when I came across the battlefield. This guy is still alive, so I was planning to take him somewhere safe when you stopped by. That's pretty much it."

"So she really did just happen to be nearby..." Anish thought as he relaxed.

He didn't mistrust the girl's words, and she certainly didn't look like a member of the soldier's platoon, or even a native at that. Trying to avoid her noticing, he studied her appearance from head to toe. With her tanned skin, blue clothes and shell trinket, there was no arguing that she was Water Tribe. The fact that she seemed so far from home still rose some questions however...

He noticed Nauja couldn't help but stare at the boy's unconscious form with a worried expression on her face.

"Still, I can't help but wonder what happened..."

Anish adjusted his grip nervously on the Ostrich Horses reins. He was still trying to process exactly what he had witnessed, the way the boy seemed to enter a trance as the earth constricted around him like a shield, before crushing the attackers without a shred of hesitation.

"I can only tell you what I saw, though I'm not really sure the specifics myself. Long story short? This guy's platoon were ambushed by Fire Nation soldiers, this one..." he gestured with his head towards the back of the mount, "...used some kind of Earthbending I've never seen and killed them all."

Taking another look at the Earthbender's face, Anish began to worry about his condition himself, not for the boy's sake however, but for the state of his mission. With the rest of the group dead, this boy was his only real lead as to information about the Avatar. Now that he knew the Fire Nation were already taking measures of their own, even with the soldier's knowledge, he realised that had to be much more aggressive in his search if he were to have even a remote chance of locating the Avatar before they did.

"We should arrive at the village before nightfall. Hopefully his condition will improve by then. I have some questions for him as soon as he awakens, after which I'll be on my way."

The monk's words made Nauja stop in her tracks. "...What?" It seemed impossible that one boy could have done such a thing, and with a new kind of Earthbending? It sounded impossible... and yet...

She remembered being really, really angry once, and what happened afterwards...

"We should arrive at the village before nightfall. Hopefully his condition will improve by then. I have some questions for him as soon as he awakens, after which I'll be on my way."

Nauja nodded. "Sounds good." She really wanted to be away from this place as soon as possible. From the bag on her shoulder, Miki chirruped as if in agreement.

A short "Squawk" came from Jojo as the three approached the town. Only about twenty minutes from the forest clearing.
It was the late evening and the shops were beginning to close, the villagers in the markets were packing up their stools.
The lights of the inn came on, from the outside it seemed very humble and welcoming.

"You three must have had some night out." A voice from behind the pair stated.
An elderly lady approached them. "Oh, where are my manners, my name is Anya. I'm a herbalist in this town, may I look at the boy?"
Anya was a short lady, with a long green dress and strange knotted hairstyle, a smile stretched upon her face.

"It is a custom to bow before your superiors when greeting them." Admiral Chan remarked with a stern look on his face as Kajiya entered the room, which prompted the blacksmith to quickly bow. "Ahh, but I see you've brought me the blade I requested, I did not expect it so soon, but this is not the reason I called for you." The admiral then motioned Kajiya to lay the blade on his desk, he then began to examine the craftsmanship whilst simultaneously giving Kajiya a derisive hand gesture, motioning him to take a seat.

Out of all the others also assembled here, it was Ding that he had the most personal experience with, the stout man having come into the smithy on a number of occasions since Kajiya's arrival to request repairs and improvements to be made on his duel swords. The twin commanders were quite renowned by some of the younger recruits, though those may have been cases of boot-licking and fear rather than genuine admiration given their reputation. It was only Morishita that Kajiya knew little about, the man was quite the enigma.

Admiral Chan then went on to brief as to the reasoning behind this meeting; in conjunction with the announcement that the next Avatar was an Airbender, a group of Earthbenders from the city of Taku were sent out to greet them. The group of five were going to be sent to Admiral Lee who resided in an outpost north west of Omashu. He then motioned towards a map which had several figures of Fire Nation soldiers positioned in close proximity to the Air Temples. Kajiya took note as to their positions, in case it was useful later.

"Now if there are no questions, you are dismissed."

"Sir, what is to be our mission once we reach Admiral Lee? Are we to set up some kind of ambush, or is there something else in mind?"

"Sir, what is to be our mission once we reach Admiral Lee? Are we to set up some kind of ambush, or is there something else in mind?"

Admiral Chan began to scratch his chin. What exactly was Lee's plan? I'm surprised he didn't mention any attempt to ambush them before contacting for support. he thought to himself.
"Admiral Lee will brief you on his plan once you arrive." Chan replied.
"But due to the nature of the request, I presume you will be hunting this group down before they can cause any problems for our movement."
Though knowing Lee, there's probably another motive for it, I just can't figure out what. He questioned himself in thought.

The walk from the clearing wasn't too long, and within minutes they were at the village. It was late, and Nauja was ready to fall asleep any moment.

As they entered, an old woman greeted them. "You three must have had some night out. Oh, where are my manners, my name is Anya. I'm a herbalist in this town, may I look at the boy?"

"Sure, go ahead," Nauja said, "In the meantime, is there an inn we can stay at?"

The old lady moved toward Tao, observing his state.
"Oh my... I've never seen someone so exhausted in my times."
She pulled a green mixture from the torso of her dress, and began to lather his scarred arms in it.
"He just needs some rest, it's too bad there's no proper healers close to the town, it would make treating the burns much easier."

The lady seemed to snap back to attention, realising she'd ignored the girls question.
"Oh yes! And there's an inn just over there."
She pointed toward the inn, it was quite close to the towns entrance.
"The accommodation is quite cheap, I only ask that you're not here for any trouble, though you two don't seem the type." She smiled at Anish.
"I'll take the boy to my center. It's always a pleasure to treat an Earth Kingdom soldier."
