Avengers' Agent Coulson Received Illustrated Encylopedia on S.H.I.E.L.D.

The actor playing Coulson asked Marvel for a backstory, and got a book.

The Marvel universe now contains the character of S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Coulson, but before his first appearance in the first Iron Man film, he didn't exist on the pages of comic books. Actor Clark Gregg said he wanted to know more about S.H.I.E.L.D and his chief, Nick Fury while he was filming, and the Marvel representatives complied ... with a specially created book containing every bit of information on S.H.I.E.L.D.

"The great thing is that the Marvel guys are there and you say, 'I need a little more background on Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.,' and the next day they hand you this thing that any fanboy would die for, kind of an encyclopedia illustrated about the history of S.H.I.E.L.D," Gregg said.

At first, Gregg felt a bit liberated by the fact that his character couldn't be criticized because it didn't exist, and that allowed him to create his own character - as long as it stayed true to the canon. "The fanboys and girls are very interested in the [mythology] like, 'that goes directly against what goes in the comic'," Gregg said. "And they can't do that with me. I feel like these movies are designed to respect those comics, so I always made a point of checking out what there was about S.H.I.E.L.D."

In contrast, the actress playing Agent Maria Hill [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Hill] had a lot of comics to read. "I went online and found comic books and bought them from different sites," said Cobie Smulders. "I bought two from this guy and bought three from another guy. It really helped me seeing her visually instead of just reading a character description."

With Steve Butts' Marvel Roleplaying Game and the impending release of the Avengers, I'm currently gobbling up all the comics I can. Sounds like these actors had to take a crash course in the Marvel Universe as well.

As I was not really up to date on Marvel lore before these films (nor am I much wiser now that I've seen them). I have to say that Coulson's character was one of my favourites of the various films and the Avengers.

WHY DID THEY HAVE TO KILL HIM?! I mean at least he got a good death in going one on one with Loki and pulling the Avengers together after their disagreements. But when he died and Fury did the trading card guilt trip thing to Rogers I was very, very sad. It was a speechless, open mouthed moment for me when he died reassuring Fury that his death would bind them together.

Methinks that Civil War isnt going to happen very soon, mostly due to that it requires the presence of several Marvel characters that Marvel Studios currently dont have the rights to.

Though i havent seen Avengers yet, and i found a small spoiler on Wikipedia that indicates whats coming next.

I didn't really like his character at first, but he was more fleshed out in the Avengers. He really grew on me. As for the spoiler:
They killed him as soon as I was starting to really like him! So mean! And he never got those cards signed :'( He should get his own movie, a prequel!

OT: That's cool of Marvel. No half-assed job there it seems.

I'm just going to say thanks for hiding all the spoilers. NIce and classy. Also, to everyone below me:

SERIOUSLY. DO NOT CLICK ON THE SPOILERS. I DID AND AM NOW REGRETTING IT IN A MAJOR WAY.

On topic, that was nice. Wonder if there's any way copies of the SHIELDpedia could get sold to fanboys?

Minor spoilers, but still don't click it. Unless you've watched the movie ofc. ;)

Best scene, ever. Hulk had some of the best scenes in this movie.

Punching the giant flying space snake, smacking Loki about and fighting Thor was awesome as well.

As a nerd, seeing them in blood made me incredibly sad.

WHY did you click them?? And I really hope that as well. Also, be careful quoting any of us since the tags won't work.

Yeah, the Hulk was definitely the stand-out of the movie! I really disliked him in the earlier movies, I can't believe Whedon and Ruffalo managed to make him so awesome!

I thought a guide to SHIELD type of book existed already? Well either way more money for Marvel to make one!
Still I'm glad Agent Coulson is given some spotlight given to his role in the film. He already made an animated apperance in the kiddy Ultimate Spiderman cartoon shows, I wonder when he will depute in Marvel comic itself?

Spoiler for the post credits scene below, dont click if have not seen it.
The scene at the end seemed to be Thanos viewed as a big leader (A nerd who knew who he was shouted it at the end of the film) So what could the next film possibly focus on? The Inhumans and the Eternals?

So, how much do you want to bet every single diehard Marvel fanboy's gonna try to do as much as possible to get a glance at that fabled S.H.I.E.L.D. encyclopedia?

I'd forgotten Cobie Smulders was in this movie. Must go and see it this weekend! It's been out for a week already and for some reason I haven't made it an absolute top priority.

This sounds very cool though. If I was making a movie based on anything that I've written I'd probably end up doing this for every character. There is so much backstory that we never get to see in the finished work, so it's always good to know that there was planning and forethought.

Maybe Marvel could do it tied in with a charity PR event to promote a movie, like The Avengers.
