I'm going to have to go with Zombies, from anything. Really they would be really scary and I would hate to come face to face to one.

Also Radscorpians from Fallout 3. The big ones that don't take none of your crap. Those things freak me the hell out and I can't stand them. Whenever I see one in the distance I try and chuck as many landmines as I possibly can.

Just about anything that goes "boom". F'r instance: in Ang Lee's Hulk there was a scene where they dropped cluster grenades on Hulk. A harmless sounding little "pop" followed by a hundred-ish booms that herald shockwavy, shrapnelly death to everything in the kill zone (except the Hulk of course, because Hulk). Take that same concept and multiply that by whatever factor you want to match your 'splosion of choice... Fuck that. Don't get me wrong, I love explosions on the big screen. It's like watching fireworks. Not a fan when I am in the middle of them tho'. ;p

Pretty much everything in Dragon Ball Z. If you're an average human, you'd be stuck in a constant loop of suffering worldwide earthquakes every single time one of the characters decided to power up, getting killed in the midst of one of the super warriors' battles, and being brought back to life with amnesia. All the while, the media presents the kind of unchallenged, anti-intellectual hero worship of Mr. Satan (Hercule in the dub) that The Daily Mail could only dream of.

Superheroes.

Seriously, I think they do more damage monthly than Godzilla does in a single picture. And even scarier if you live in the New York City area, since half of the Marvel Universe resides there. I think Galactus even has a SoHo address.

"Maybe if I just stalk you harder, you'll love me!"

Go read the book Steelheart what happens if people suddenly gained super powers here's a hint no one becomes a superhero.

Then it's not particularly relevant to my point, is it? It's just more absurd fantasy.

Katamari Damacy.

I would have many objections to being rolled up into a giant ball and then turned into a star. Pretty much most later levels of that game involve the extinction of humanity.

It would make a fantastic roland emmerich movie, however.

Literally any action hero from games or movies would be existentially terrifying to witness, especially if you're a member of the group they're aiming at. Guys who load themselves up with firearms in media tend to be awesome, hardbitten badasses. In real life, they're psychopaths. I don't care what group you're going to kill; if you're going to just gun them all down there's something wrong with you.

the events of Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

look at it this way, you've got a senario where a lab-made virus wipes out probably 90% of the human race, then 10 years later, the survivors eventually find themselves having to contend with being at war with an army of apes with superhuman intelligence and access to military weaponry.

And by the end of it, if you're not dead, you'll either get hunted down like an animal for the rest of your life, or held captive by said apes as a pet or a slave.

yeah, I suspect that, in hindsight, it would make a zombie apocalypse look like a picnic.

Orange is The New Black is all like, "Prison is awesome! It's full of sassy, strong, independant women having wacky sitcom hijinks, but you know they're just jokin' 'round with their murder and hate!" It's basically just like an HBO sitcom in a bland prison setting and with more lesbians.

In reality, depending on your sentence, womens' prison would probably be worse than mens'. Especially if you, like, killed a kid or something.

Let's see...

Aliens
Mechs
Zombies/Infected
Pokemon/Digimon
.Hack/SAO/Log Horizen
Harems

Honorable mention to summing one's Persona... because it still sounds more awesome than terrifying to do in real life... (unless you get scared easily, I guess...)

Seconding this and taking it to the next level with X-Men's mutants. Why are the mutants worse than superheroes? Well first of all it's the superhero problem with far higher frequency, and then there's the fact that mutants come into their powers at about the same time they hit puberty (Which is to say that the same time Bobby and Jenny famously start lashing out at the world is the same time that they learn that they can make peoples' heads explode and blow holes in the walls), and then there's the matter of it happening to any kid (Sarah down the street? She grew a prehensile tail. Billy two doors down? He turned into Baraka. Jill? That little perv got X-ray vision. Sam? Normal...we think. Alex? He just learned that he can send people to the moon. Shen Xorn? He now has a black hole for a head. Isn't it just lovely to know that someone within a few blocks of you can level the city in an instant?

The events of Dead Space would be truly horrific.

In the game your a badass engineer with an awesome plated work suit (I love the RIG designs in Dead Space) on a ship in decaying orbit around a planet that was mysteriously cordoned off by the government back on earth. In the context of the game this is so exciting, what an awesome setting and premise! (I realize the game heavily lifts concepts from Event Horizon)

In all actuality those previously mentioned factors would make for a thoroughly unenjoyable experience to put it lightly.

Edit: It just occurred to me there is a great video of why a world with kaiju would be scary in detail:

I wouldn't worry about that. Godzilla wouldn't even be able to get out of the water, much less destroy a city:

I'm going to have to agree with those that mention war in general. It's strange how armed conflict is so horrifyingly cruel and inhumane in real life, yet people can't seem to get enough of it in the realm of fiction.

Other settings that would be terrifying:

Warhammer 40,000. Anyone even remotely familiar with the setting should know exactly what I'm talking about.

The Halo universe. Humanity fighting a losing war against the Covenant, billions of soldiers and civilians alike killed, entire planets glassed from orbit, the "good guys" run by a militarist government that employs martial law and morally questionable projects (at least in the novels), etc. Yes the Master Chief saves the day in the end, but at one hell of a cost. At the beginning of the war the UNSC had dozens, if not hundreds of colonies across the galaxy. By the end of it they were pretty much down to Earth and a handful of ships. Given the odds, I would probably die a violent death if I lived in such a setting.

Any superhero setting. Sure you've got superheroes to save the day, but you've usually got a whole bunch of supervillians as well. No matter how many times they get locked up, at least one supervillian will manage to escape and cause mayhem before they're stopped. Until then, you're looking at anything from mild property damage to planetary extinction depending on the setting and type of supervillian.

My Little Pony. Real equines scare me. They're majestic creatures and all, but they're nervous, flighty and they don't know their own strength. That's a dangerous combination for an animal like that. I've met way too many horse owners that were injured by their steeds, usually in the form of broken legs or ribs. I also have a bit of a personal bias against them. One of my ancestors was dragged to death by a team of runaway horses, and one bit my finger when I was visiting a ranch. I was trying to feed it with my hand out flat like you're supposed to, but the damned thing reached around with its lips and clamped down on my index finger. Luckily it wasn't serious, but it hurt like hell.

I don't have the number of casualties from 0079-0099, but I'm pretty sure that before the One Year War started the total human population was around 11 billion not 100 billion.

Yeah just checked the Gundam wiki it is 11 billion+ the 100 billion is from the old Bandai sub.
