I'm starting Baldur's Gate today and I'm wondering what stats should a ranger have.

I was wondering if I should have...
Strength: 18
Dexterity: 18
Constitution: 16

The rest: 10-14

Does that sounds good, or should I try and go with 18 for STR, DEX and CON.

Also: What about the other stats. Should they be between certain numbers?

Depends on what you're going for. If you plan on going melee, strength should be the highest (18/00 is the highest for that, btw). If it's archery you're after, dexterity is more important.

Besides that, put points into constitution for more health and you might want to put a bit into charisma to get better discounts at shops (though Baldur's Gate 2 has a ring that boosts your charisma to 18 pretty much at the very start of the game).

Edit: oh, if you are going melee, putting points into dexterity gives you better armour.

More, as always, is better. But S18/D18/C16 is quite fine imo. The rest generally don't have any extreme effects in my experience.

So basically, can you be arsed to reroll until you get that 18x3, or do you actually want to play? :p

Depends on if you're doing Elf, Half-Elf or Human.

All 3 of them you can get percentile strength, so 18/00 is really the best, I'd just keep rerolling until you get at least 18/76.

Dexterity at 18 or 19 both give you -4 to AC, 18 is +2 to ranged attacks, 19 is +3 to ranged attacks.

Con 16 gives you +2 hp per level, 17 gives you +3 and 18 gives you +4. Elves can get 19 dex but only 17 con. Humans and half-elves are 18 and 18 max.

If you're planning on dual wielding then human or half elf is best, if you're planning on being an archer, then Elf is best, because you can get the +3 to attack and +1 on bows for being an Elf.
