Bane Makes His Arkham City Debut in New Comic

The substance-abusing strongman Bane gets more than he bargained for in a back alley cage fight.

The latest issue of the Batman: Arkham City digital comic has unveiled a new threat for Batman to face: the vicious and powerful Bane. The character also appeared in Arkham Aslyum, but it sounds like this time round, it will be closer to the Bane that comic book fans know and love.

The summary for the comic says that a bored Bane sets up an extreme fighting ring in Arkham City as a way to pass the time. Unfortunately for him, there's a shortage of opponents that can offer him a proper challenge. That is, until a seemingly "lackluster" opponent takes him by surprise.

Over the course of the comic - and if you want to avoid spoilers, then you should stop reading now - the reader learns that Titan, the drug that the Joker wanted to use in the first game to make an army of super-powered monsters, isn't impossible to get in Arkham City. The Joker sends a lackey does up with Titan to challenge Bane, in the hopes of eliminating him. It's also revealed that the effects of Titan - which Bane got a hefty dose of in the last game thanks to the Joker - do wear off over time, and that Bane had a safehouse in Arkham City, giving him access to his Venom: a drug similar to Titan, granting Bane superhuman strength - albeit less than Titan delivers - but allowing him to keep his mental faculties as well.

It sounds like Bane's role in Arkham City will be rather complicated, not exactly an ally, but not exactly an enemy either. As a fan of the Batman comics - where Bane is a criminal genius as well as a walking mountain - it will be a welcome change to see the character used in some capacity other than dumb muscle.

Batman: Arkham City comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 18th.

I always liked Bane as a character as long as he isn't used as the dumb muscle.

And that reminds me: how did the Joker keep his mental faculties while on Titan? Is the official answer just "he's the goddamn Joker"?

It's a shame that most people seem to think the movie versions of Batman's villains are the "official" ones. When most people (and rocksteady for that matter) think of Bane they remember the idiotic Hulk rip-off from "Batman & Robin".
That being said, Bane's most remembered story "Knightfall", was very poorly constructed. In the shared DC universe, the fact that Batman didn't ask for any outside help in controlling that situation was quite dumb on his part, for someone who prides himself to be a master planner.

I was under the impression that was the whole point wasn't it?
That Batman had gotten cocky and thought he could handle it, with the back breaking being the ultimate blow to his ego and showing that he could still be beaten even with all his experience?

He's just crazy enough to be immune?

Maybe it was but I never bought that idea. Batman has always had the largest superhero family, and he's supposed to be really smart and practical about his approach of facing the odds. Racing against time punching everyone until he could barely stand didn't sound very Batman-ish. Just like the death of Superman, they were poorly concieved stories meant to shake the status quo of the series.

I have unfortunately not read Knightfall, but I loved Bane in No Man's Land. Sure he didn't do a terrible lot but I think it's more what he DIDN'T do that made me like him so much :)

I don't think that that's an entirely fair criticism, at least not of Rocksteady. Yes, Bane's appearance in Arkham Asylum did emphasize his physical characteristics, but I don't think that's because Rocksteady didn't know any better, I think it's because the studio could only give so much screen time to each villain. Sure, there's more you can do with Bane, but he wasn't who the story was about.

That and he wasn't on Venom in AA, he was on Titan. Given how it changed normal people it doesn't seem too out of place to assume it hindered his mental faculties.

Considering the Joker wasn't all that sane to begin with, he probably kept his intellect because he's already lost his mind.

Did he HAVE normal mental faculties to begin with? You can't lose what you don't have...

The only thing that Joker kept that the other mooks on Titan didn't was the ability to crack jokes and be a camera whore.

You know, just once I want an Bane that's fucking smart.

They did it in young Justice!
Young Justice has done an amazing job of translating all it's characters into a new media, probably one of the best jobs of it I've ever seen.

I think in the games Time Line, that already happened. In Arkham Asylum Batman says "This time I break you", before the Batmobile crashes into bane.

He is already insane. Can't get more insane.

But yeah him being the Joker is pretty much the explanation for it. Same with his immunity to Fear gas. The Joker knows no fear! Fans happy.

Though I think it's because of all the Jedi training his voice actor went through.

On the note of how Bane was portrayed in Arkham Aylum. I actually had no problem with it. When you first see him he is restrained and gives you some exposition. He prioritizes informing Batman of the bigger threat, which is the fact that Titan is being synthesized using the Venom recipe, rather than attempting hostile remarks or whatever.

It's not until the Joker turns on the Titan machine that he loses all reason and shows open hostility towards Batman by charging at him. The Joker also calls him a Has-been which in my eyes clearly suggest Bane is not a voluntary accomplish and might actually wants to show the Joker what he thought of that joke in Arkham City.

His role was small sure which allowed for little else but a fairly sub par boss fight but that's because there was no time to focus solely on Bane. Same goes with other boss villains. We see em for a split second and than we beat them.

The Joker is the main bad guy. He is the puppet master and everyone else dances to his tunes.
