Batman v Superman Producer Says Film Won't Be Overstuffed

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice producer Charles Roven says the finished film won't lose track of its main heroes over secondary characters.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn't just an on-screen meeting of the world's greatest superheroes. It also introduces DC Comics' broader film universe, including cameos of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/wonder%20woman?os=wonder+woman>Wonder Woman, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139899-Zack-Snyder-Has-Revealed-Jason-Momoas-Aquaman>Aquaman, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134001-BOOYAH-Ray-Fisher-is-Cyborg-in-Batman-Vs-Superman>Cyborg, and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135869-Dawn-of-Justice-May-Have-Four-Additional-Villains>potentially many more. This has prompted fears from several fans that Warner Bros. is overstuffing its story in a rush to fill its Justice League roster. But according to producer Charles Roven, that's not the case at all - Batman v Superman will focus squarely on central characters while teasing personalities you'll want to see later on.

"I don't think that's an issue for this film at all. I really don't," Roven told Collider. "I think that the film is called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so there's a reason it's called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and not Dawn of Justice: Batman v Superman. So you're gonna invest mostly in Batman v Superman and I think that you'll find other characters in there that you hopefully will want to see more of."

In other words, Roven is stating this will be a Batman/Superman movie first, and a Justice League prequel second. Which if accurate, means all those Aquaman or Wonder Woman promotional materials are solely about building the DC universe - not complete plot arcs featured in this film.

"I think like any genre, the movies have to be good and you have to keep the audience engaged," Roven said. "One of the things that we're doing when we're bringing together the DC Justice League Universe is we're creating not only stories that work for the individual film but they have some resonance to the other films that we're doing. And I'm hoping that what's also gonna keep the interest very keen is we're telling hopefully compelling stories."

Since Roven is Batman v Superman's producer, we obviously have to take his statement with a grain of salt. But he might not be wrong - after all, the only comparable superhero project is Marvel's Cinematic Universe, which played a long game for four years before bringing superheroes together in Avengers. Anything faster will naturally feel rushed and risky, but we won't know for sure until Batman v Superman launches next year.

On the other hand, Batman v Superman <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139899-Zack-Snyder-Has-Revealed-Jason-Momoas-Aquaman>put a lot of effort into promoting heroes <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/wonder%20woman?os=wonder+woman>who aren't Batman or Superman, which clashes with Roven's claim. Not to mention rumors already abound <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139386-Rumor-Is-Warner-Bros-Batman-V-Superman-Being-Split-Into-Two-Films>of a four-hour cut of the movie. Roven didn't confirm or deny such rumors, but suggested something like an extended cut may be on the way.

"I don't know if you'll ever get the 4-hour version," he explained, "but there may be something that's coming along that might be slightly less long than that."

Batman v Superman And Friends hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

I don't know, this sounds like when a food company advertises there's "hardly any" worms in their food.

Andm, as the article notes, there has been a lot of time devoted to promoting other superheroes, which makes me think they will play a substantial part. Which wouldn't bother me if I had faith in them. Which I don't. And all of this would be academic if they weren't rpotesting.

Press X to doubt, that being said I'd totally be down for a 4 hour long cut.
More long movies and less two parters is a direction I totally support

Yeah, you can claim it won't be overstuffed, but that doesn't convince me that it won't suck for the many reasons I expect it to besides that.
Such as an overly dark tone that serves no real thematic point, characters who's actions don't make sense, and a director who answers to the name of Zack Snyder.

Never a good sign when the producer is already trying to counter criticism before the movie is even out (at least, not when it's about the film itself and not some stupid social justice crusade). This is definitely having some hallmarks of a film that's going down hard: and I mean Waterworld kind of hard.

And why not go for a four-hour runtime? They could even give us an intermission. If we're willing to sit through 3.5 hours of lord of the rings, I suspect we'd be willing to do the same for batman v superman; of course, that's assuming that it's good. I don't think they're making that assumption: uh oh.

It already felt like Man of Steel was overstuffed and cut down significantly, and now we have this? Calm down and pace yourselves, Warner Bros. You aren't going to beat Marvel like this - especailly if your viewers will barely understand what's going on because your theatrical cut of the film cuts out nearly half of it.

Seeing it said so many times in a single paragraph really drives home how fucking awful "Batman v Superman" sounds as a title.

I gave a quick look through the photos and stopped at what is number 2 for me. The one with what appears to be batman being down on his knees and a group of what appears to be superman's goons. That image alone made me almost spit out my coffee. That facial expression is gold I tell you!

The movie about the aftermath of Metropolis' downfall and a war between Batman-imitator-vigilantes and alien worshipers, a batlle between the two most iconic DC Superheroes who brood a lot, the scheemes of Lex Luthor, the involvement of Wonderwoman, Batmans Ironman-siut, 9-11 symbolism...

No, sure. This "[...]Film Won't Be Overstuffed"

Whatever you say WB. Either this is going to be a 4 hour movie or it's going to have plot chasms. If it were announced tomorrow that Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice is going to be a part 1 that wouldn't surprise me. It also wouldn't surprise me if this turns into an origin movie for everybody but Superman.

First off, I can't stop laughing at some of those signs the protesters carry...
Second off, I'm sure Wonder Woman's "cameo" would be as long (or longer) than Bryan Cranston's "cameo" in Godzilla...
Third off, don't you dare not showcase the 4+ hour cut of the movie...
Four off, If the movie's going to be cut theatrically, does that mean they would just cut it down more if some of the "cameos" don't leave a lasting impression on the audience, despite said audience's main focus is suppose to be on the Batman/Superman affair overall?
Fifth off, when I think of overstuffed, I think of Oreos, thus I hope this movie's as good as a overstuffed Oreo...

I am going to keep defending this because I am the only DC fan here that cares and likes the direction they are going.

I don't mind if this movie is "bloated" because personally I like long 4 hour movies. I don't want a 2 hour roller coaster ride. I want a 4 hour epic.

And why all the Zack Snyder bashing all of a sudden? People are treating him like Uwe Boll all of a sudden. 300 is a good movie, Watchmen is a great movie despite some flaws.

We are already seeing a disconnect between the studio and the producers. Looking pretty bad, guys.

I'm a DC fan but how DC is running their cinematic universe inspires little faith. They're just throwing too many things together and seeing what sticks. Also, grimdark is not a tone I want for every superhero. BvS looks bad and Suicide Squad looks even worse.

Hey its better than having to watch 5 different movies just to get what's going on :p

And if you hate the tone so much do you also hate the fact that Batman The Killing Joke animated adaption will be rated R? Because that comic is pretty dark.

This tone is better than winking at the audiance, smart ass, "comedic dialoge" direction the Marvel movies are doing. Guardians of the Galaxy made me groan and facepalm at its "Comedy" and man did I not fuckin called it that Groot was gonna sacrifice himself Iron Giant stlye ever since I found out Vin Diesal is voicing him, right down to the last word, replace "We Are Groot" with "Superman" and you have the Wooden Giant :p

Well, I'm not mad about Killing Joke being rated R because it is a dark story and Batman is a dark character. Superman isn't dark, Flash isn't dark, Green Lantern isn't dark, fucking Aquaman sure isn't dark and they turned him into Rob Zombie.

Man of Steel wasn't really..."Dark" it just had a more serious tone. I mean does the theme song in the movie sounded "Dark and Brooding?"
