Battlefield 3 Expands with Co-op and Social Network

DICE announces [a href="http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-3-Limited-Pc/dp/B002I0HJZO "]Battlefield 3[/a] multiplayer will be shown at E3, but that's far from being its biggest surprise.

A recent entry on the [a href="http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2011/06/03/bf3-goes-to-e3.aspx##"]official Battlefield blog[/a], announced Battlefield 3 will feature an "extensive co-op campaign" - a first for the series. The game will also implement a social network and stat tracking portal with the new Battlelog website, which will be free to all players.

"[Battlelog] lets you manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends' progress in real-time, and more," DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson wrote.

It was also announced the game would feature Team Deathmatch, which is kind of like announcing the game will feature sound options, at this point.

More so than any entry before it, Battlefield 3 seems like a direct reaction to Call of Duty. In past entries, single-player was always secondary. Now, it's the first thing shown off in trailers. With the announcement of community features and co-op, it seems BF3 is a note-for-note response to Actvision's best-selling military shooter. Add on [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109304-DICE-Battlefield-3-Looks-Better-on-Consoles-Because-Were-Making-it-for-PC"]better graphics for all[/a] and the fact that Activision want [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110483-Activision-Unveils-New-Call-of-Duty-Online-Service"]people to pay[/a] for many of the features DICE will offer for free, and Battlefield might have a shot at taking CoD's throne.

Co-op and Battlelog will not be shown at E3, but readers can look forward to our coverage of multiplayer (on the new "Operation Métro" map) next week.

Still getting both MW3 and BF3. I love how hard EA is trying to make this game great, just means more benefits for me in the Fall. Super excited.

Looking forward too it!

I'm going to buy this game twice, once for 360 so I can play with my Xbox buddies, and on PC cause it's a freaking Battlefield game...

Announcing that a core Battlefield title (Bad Company is not core) features TDM isn't actually that obvious. Hell, Bad Company 2 didn't even feature a standard TDM game type, instead it went with a four player per team affair.

Also, Yay! Now make sure you include split screen for us consoletards so we can play with all our jock-douchebag friends!
Can we please stop with this babbling on both sides? PC gamers who hate on console gamers are stupid and vice versa. Both sides deserve deep, rich gaming experiences and such are possible on all current systems.

And yeah, I realize your post was very likely just a joke, but it still feeds on a stereotype that we badly need to get rid of.

I'd been thinking about getting MW3...then I heard about the lack of dedicated servers. And Battlefield 3.

Sign me up for Battlefield!

Teeeeaaaaammm Deaaaaathmaaaatch???

Hmm. I am skeptical. I don't particularly want any more CoD in my BF. Squad DM was a good, interesting change that fit in with BF's style, and it servers were small enough that I don't think it lured too many players in it's icy, non-objective based grip.

I am afraid of the day I boot up BF3 a year after release and there are no Conquest and Rush modes being playing anymore, only TDM. And I fear BF4 saying that they are "listening to the community" and replacing all their modes with TDM variants.

"Puh-shaw!" you say. "That will never happen in Battlefield!" You say. But, like Smokey says: Only you can prevent dumb Multiplayer modes. Say no to TDM servers.

in b4 "Call of Duty didn't invent TDM BWAAAAA!"

I prefer to think of it more along the lines of "MoH in your BF", and by that I mean they are saying (subliminally) is that DICE may have learned some things developing a (albeit only the multiplayer side of it) non-Battlefield title.

At least, that's how I like to think of it.

I just built a top notch PC. Sounds as if BF3 is the game for me. I might even get it for console simply because of the co-op campaign, something CoD should never have taken away.

Just a question, how many of those games were specifically developed by DICE? I'm pretty sure some of the spinoffs are made by other developers, no?

Anyway, that sounds pretty neat. I doubt I would use any of it as many other online games have this sort of thing where you can "track your friend's progress!/Check up on clan updates!/See your stats!" Still, that's just one more reason to despise Activision's money-grubbing ways.

Well, Wikipedia tells me DICE was responsible for Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome, Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Battlefield 2: Special Forces, Battlefield 2: Euro Force, Battlefield 2: Armored Fury, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike, Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield Online, Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam, Battlefield Play4Free and Battlefield 3. So yeah...

Mind you, I'm not complaining, since a majority of them are expansion packs, and the games are actually good. I'm betting CoD:MW3 is going to be yet another poorly-made port on the PC and I've no intention of shelling out for that. I believe my thirst for twitchy shooty gameplay will be mitigated by Serious Sam 3 this year.

To be fair, this is news. Battlefield isn't really known for having pure deathmatch modes. I believe the only thing that comes really close is squad deathmatch in BC2. So, pure Team Deathmatch for Battlefield 3 is pretty significant. I'm interested in seeing at how this go in BF3.
