Bayonetta Developer Laments PS3 Port Failure

Platinum's Atsushi Inaba admits that lack of experience hindered the Bayonetta PS3 port.

Bayonetta [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7024-Review-Bayonetta] was one of those games you either loved or hated, but the PS3 version got a lot of stick for its slowdown, frame rate and loading time issues. Platinum Games' director admits that the problem was all Platinum's fault, and calls the PS3 Bayonetta conversion "our biggest failure."

"At the time we didn't really know how to develop on PS3 all that well," says Inaba, "and whether we could have done it... is irrelevant: we made the decision that we couldn't." So rather than tackle it themselves, Platinum handed it over to an in-house Sega team. The result was the somewhat problematic port that could easily have been a deal-breaker for many players.

"One thing I will say is that it wasn't a failure for nothing," Inaba went on to say. "We learned that we needed to take responsibility for everything." Platinum started looking for a new home for Bayonetta shortly after the conclusion of its five-game deal with Sega. Hence the exclusive deal with further partnership with Sega. Given Sega's financial troubles [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116581-Sega-to-Drop-Games-and-Employees-During-Extreme-Restructuring] and what Inaba has said about the Bayonetta PS3 port, it's hardly a shocker that Platinum would prefer another console for the next Bayonetta game.

The PS3, labelled by Sony themselves as intentionally harder to program for, getting a poor port?

The shock!

Personally, I'm amazed so many other devs got it (mostly) right.

The title of this article made me think "GOOD!". That port drove me bonkers. I dug the games style and humor, but goddamn, that frame-rate just made being adept at it absurdly difficult. The combat was just too fast for how your moves registered and whatnot.

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I never had any real issues with the PS3 version of Bayonetta. Maybe if I had played the 360 version to compare it to, I'd notice, but I never had any noticeable problems with framerate or whatnot.

Same here. All I noticed was how the game had to load the pause menu, and admittedly a terrible framerate drop in that one really weird room near the end where you had to run up the walls made of giant vanishing square tiles. Everything else was fine.

I came here to say the exact same thing, Also I wonder what they did for Anarchy Reigns then like whether they learned how to port PS3 or outsourced it again.

Why didn't they, I dunno, make a P.C version of one or both?
There is hope!

With any luck they'll be forced onto the PS3 eventually.
I doubt it. PS3 games are starved for RAM. The WiiU has double the PS3's. If they did port it, it'd be very ugly.

I suppose its a good thing that the X360's OS makes it's games more easy to port to a Windows environment. I will be watching closely.
