If you had to fight a bear using only a melee weapon, what would you use. I would go with a Halberd, it's a spear and axe in one and that sounds like it would cover all my needs.

Edit: I think I would actually like to change my weapon of choice. I think I would just make like Walter and evicerate the bear with string.

Funny enough I once drew a picture of a bear WITH a halberd. Or at least, it had a hammer, and the was topped with a sort of glaive.

Well, in brazilian jiu-jitsu the proper name for the rear naked choke you're describing is Mata Leon, "the Lion Tamer". If it takes name from a giant feline, I don't see why it can't be adapted to an ursine. Good luck getting on his back, though. If he rolls once you're pretty much resigned to him eating your crushed pelvis for lunch.

Spear, naginata or halberd. The idea is that when the bear charges you, you place the plunt end of the spear into ground and wait the bear to impale itself agast the tip.

Edit: Then again, chainsaw might make loud enough noise to scare the creature away.
