I just felt a great disturbance in the force, as if a thousand geekish voices just screamed in pain once, then were silenced.

I think it's really cool of WotLC to give back to the community like this. I mean sure it's a kids game, but it's nice of them to give it out for free!

And just like Beholder is turned into the lovable plush toy enemy of the series. See: Pikachu, and Slime.
Aww, now you got me thinking of Hissy [http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Hissy].
GODDAM NINJAS.

Well, now I don't know what to post.

This is silly, patronizing and goes against all the years RPG players have wasted trying to convince people that RPGs are not just for kids.

On the other hand? IT'S FRIGGIN AWESOME! Seriously, I'm reading this and thinking "Man it would have rocked if someone showed this to me when I was a kid!"

Great idea, I must admit. But it doesn't sit well with me. Beholders are not supposed to look cute and cuddly. They are supposed to be horrific badasses trying to murder you. And that picture is not a Beholder.

Well, between the Dungeon Of Dread's Eye Of Flame and the kid's version, I would give the latter to a 10 year old. Also, as a mini, Eye of Flame sucks.

WHAT?!
D and D isn't already for kids?
My mind is blown.
(Har har, obvious joke at the expense of my fellow D&D escapists.)
You sir, are sooooooo getting a magic missile to the face.

I don't want cute beholders! I want kids to think "Oh crap where did I put my reflection cloak?" not "Awww isn't he cute!"

To have a kid to dungeon crawl with, I must dungeon crawl a woman without wearing armour.

I don't see how D&D encourages writing, but the other things have come up recently in my group's D&D campaign.

And why do they feel the need to make kid-friendly versions of the monsters? Kids shouldn't be playing it until they're old/competent enough to understand both the way it works and the fact that it's just a game. By that point I doubt they'd be scared of seeing a real Beholder. Which, in all honesty, are about as intimidating as my dog. Who happens to be about the size of my head. And she's dead.

Nice idea, but totally unnecessary. My six and eight year olds are both playing 4th ed. DnD right now and not really having any problems with the rules. Perhaps this would have made more sense before the release of 4th ed.?

what the hells all the 3d6 ?
Availability, the goal of the product is to reach a large audience and most people have other games that they can borrow some d6s from, but not everyone has d10s and d20s.

My only question is when does the Tomb of Horrors module come out?

Wouldnt they have been better eduxing it to single d6 then. (Bizarrely I have done this and the game ran so much faster ;D)
3d6 will deliver results similar to a d20 and I imagine they still want to promote an easy transition to the full product down the line.
