Best Fallout One Character Build

Recently I got Fallout one from a friend and as soon as I made it to Vault 15, the first place you're supposed to go, I was mauled by rats and was killed. Feeling humiliated I wanted to find a better build for my character. So if anyone has a good character build they wish to share, I would be very thankful!

I played through with an emphasis on Speech. Seemed quite fun, and I tried to make sure I always had a follower to take care of the heavy lifting.

Failing that, just go for Melee, with high Strength/Agility/Endurance. Maybe tag Big Guns for the more difficult enemies.

Tag Small Guns, Speech, Lockpick. Traits are Gifted and Fast Shot.

That was my Fallout 2 build and I kept it through to Fallout. I later traded Fast Shot for Finesse with a new character. Absolutely brutal starting off, but impossible to kill by the end (especially with Sniper).

As for Vault 15... yeah it sucks at low levels. You know you can leave when your character figures out there's nothing there, right?

I have not found a reason not to use Gifted. It's like Genuis in Sims 3.

(Now there's a comparison that will make hardcore Fallout fans explode. HA!)

wait do you actually have to go to vault 15 and find out there is nothing or do you need to find a rope and go down into the vault

It's much easier the first time around if you use Gifted. Those extra stat points make a lot of difference. Loss of SP is negligible.

Venture into the vault a bit and your character will observe that there's nothing there and suggest you look elsewhere. And yes, you need a Rope to get down the shaft. Nab one from Shady Sands. If you pick up everything you see, you might have one. Failing that, buy one from Junktown or something.

For Fallout 1, I usually do: Traits: Gifted + Finesse, Tag: Small Guns + Stealth + one other (usually barter). Stats: Get Perception, Agility, and Intelligence to 10, luck at least 6.

Then, boost Small Guns as much as you can while getting barter to 80-100. With that barter, you'll have unlimited cash. Now, the key part of this build, unlike the Fast Shot builds above, is that you ALWAYS use targeted shots. Focus on critical hits; get the More Criticals and Better Criticals perks ASAP. Aim for the Eyes. If your hit rate on the eyes isn't high enough, get more small guns. Also, sneak everywhere in combat situations; you often will only alert the creature you're shooting (even though silenced weapons don't exist...) if your sneak is good enough.

This is a bit different from my Fallout 2 build, usually Gifted + Fast shot, tag Small, Big, and Energy guns, run and gun like a beast using the heaviest weapon you can find (or a gauss rifle)

And aiming for the eyes is the best way to deal with Death Claws. I've never used Fast Shot, since I prefer aimed shots.

The thing about WRPGs is that you're making your own character; choose what appeals to you most. It may be tough starting off, but ask for strategies on how to complete the game with what you've gotten.
All games are Ascensionable if you work hard enough and have a bit of luck. Just don't get killed by gnome with a wand of Death.

Wait, what game are we talking about again?

I found sneak to be a god send. Many RPGs become a whole lot easier when you have resources, and you can steal almost everything from people except for a rare few who have folk watching their backs. Once you've gotten those resources, you stop worrying about ammo or how much you're willing to spend on some better armour.

Not meant for fighting, but you can usually aim right for their eyes to knock them down if negotiations sour. Small guns and speech are a must for tags. This playthrough I chose energy weapons for late game ass-kickery.

1 always go high agility. Add some bonus moves and action bonusses later.

2 tag energy weapons to make the 2nd half easy, but don't actually raise points until then. The turbo plasma rifle is the best alround weapon.

optional: also tag small guns to make the early game easier, but you can get an energy weapon early if you know where.
