Metropolis!

WHY HAS NOONE MENTIONED IT!? YOU HEATHENS!
Metrowhat?

^.^
Its a joke I know but now I'm scared :(
Well it's a really old movie. In less than 20 years it's going to turn 100 years since it came. Some hardcore fans of Starwars and Blade Runner might know the film but only as a reference, but I think that it's a film that only the hardcore Sci-Fi geeks know.

But! I think that the original cut that runned over 3 hours(me thinks) is getting released in Blu-Ray and DvD this year.

I discovered it through a girlfriend that was into silent movies.

Some Sci-fi makes the mistake of trying to make me care too much about the boring everyday live of the people out in space or sitting right next to a wormhole into another universe.

I think the best sci-fi can make light of its subject matter, has solid believable characters, and doesn't necessarily spend ages defining the operating principles of the fictional technology. But on the other hand, the mechanics of the sci-fi have to be believable.

Doctor Who would have to be my favourite sci-fi series, but an honourable mention also goes to Half-life, Fallout 3, Tron,The Darklands Trilogy and of course Back to the Future. And maaybe the matri- no definitely not come to remember it.

My best is the old school stuff:

The City and the Stars by Arthur C Clarke. My favourite sci-fi book ever, a wonderful description or Earth in 3 billion years time.

The Foundation Series by Issac Asimov (the orginial 3). Loved it.

Dune > Rest

The Spice must flow.

Okay I'll explain.

Why Dune? Cause Dune is problably the one Sci-Fi book that bothered to make a planet a real planet, not just a thing the heroes go to. It had ecology, religion, prophecies, economy, real people, real wild life etc etc.

The same way that Middle-Earth(Arda for Tolkienettes) is still the only "real" fantasy world.

So Dune reigns supreme for being Sci-Fi that takes itself serious, cutting the weird aliens and the bullshit "Black Holes don't work that way!!" out of the way, making room for the world, plot and characters.

Dune proving since 1965 that it's still THE Science Fiction tale and that we should forget everything that involves the name Dune besides Frank Herbet's original, and that his son should die and stop writng crap.

Edit: And Ender's Game for a close second. And I would put Battlestar galactica higher if it weren't for the "God did it" crap.
I agree with you that Dune is some of the best written Sci Fi ever. I loved all of the Dune books, even when the plot got so thick I had to re-read sections to figure out what was going on. However, I disagree with you that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Dune books are not as good. I have read all of Frank Herbert's and all of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Dune books and I think that they are all great.

I'll be the first to admit that movie versions of books are never as good as the books themselves, but I'd still love to see a movie or perhaps better yet, a TV series (especially if it was done using really well drawn anime)based very closely on all of the Dune books. If they started with the earliest of the Dune prequel books and did all the books, the TV show would be on the air with new episodes every week for years. If it was done well enough, it would beat records set by shows like Robotec and Doctor Who for how long it was on.

Yes.

Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica, and I would even say Lost counts as "Sci Fi".

When it comes to video games I would say Mass Effect, and Half-Life.

Also Dune will always have a special place in my heart, along with 2001 a Space Odyssey.

Edit: And I would agree with the post right below mine, District 9 was pretty bad ass.

I agree that Doctor Who is great. The fact that it has survived so many changes and has been on the air longer than just about any other TV show other than soap operas proves it. Doctor Who also proves you don't need a big budget and lots of gee-whiz special effects to create compelling sci fi. Even the newest episodes of the show don't rely heavily on effects though they do look better than what was done years ago. It's the drama, humor and relationships of the characters in the show that people really care about. I think all good stories are that way regardless of the genre.

I like reading Science Fiction books and I have read so many that I almost start twitching when I hear the term Sci-Fi as it can been seen as Science Fiction's retarded, hyperactive little brother. I do enjoy shows like Firefly, Star Trek TNG, Futurama and Gunbuster.

Why oh why is Anne McCaffrey always labeled as fantasy...

She herself called it science fiction!

Since I'm a fantasy buff, the Dragonriders of Pern is probably the only sci-fi BOOK series I like. I don't read much sci-fi, because I'd rather have magic then machines. Though, as to television, Stargate SG-1.

Never seen Firefly. Or read Dune.
