Best ps3/psn for an anime/jrpg/japanese style game fan

Hello, I just recently bought a ps3 and I was wondering what some good game choices for anime/jrpg/japanese game fan would be. I'm speaking from a general aesthetic standpoint here. It doesn't have to look strictly anime, I just don't want something that typifies that gritty western "realism" or overly muscled, square-jawed hero. Something that you can look at and say "oh yeah, that's from japan". Kinda like most of Nintendo's stuff. Sorry if this thread seems redundant, I just didn't have the time to go searching atm. I'm already aware of most things from NIS, Star Ocean, Valkyria Chronicles, the FF series, and Eternal Sonata. Anybody got anything else?

Game working with Studio Ghibli, you can't get anymore Japanese than that.
Sadly, It's not out yet, but it will give you something to look forward to.

well, I'm already aware of all of those and over half of them suck. As far as I can tell, the Ps3 is no Ps2. Got anymore?

If you're looking for an Anime style game then you could try Asura's Wrath. Think of it as Dragonball Z meets the epic parts of God of War with some Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as the créme filling . It's pretty much meant to play out like an Anime series with episode trailers and Ad-Bumpers to boot!

Yeah, I meant to look that one up, I was just going to wait for the price drop on it, though.

NIER. I like NIER.

Some other games, um... Record of Agarest War. I haven't played it myself, but it definitely fits "oh yeah that's from Japan" and it's the only PSN game that I can think of that fits.

You've already got some good suggestions, but I wouldn't completely dismiss the Japanese take on Western aesthetics. It's produced some really interesting (and cool-looking) games without resorting to FPS-style "gritty realism":

Nier
Dragon's Dogma
Demon's Souls/Dark Souls

These games all "look" Western, except that they really don't. Nier's only concession to "Western" tastes was to age the protagonist into a big, gruff father instead of a slight, stoic brother, but it works well, and it doesn't interfere with the more exuberant artistic designs in the creatures and costumes. The creators of the Souls games clearly love Berserk (manga), and even Dragon's Dogma shows its Japanese origins in narrative tone and style. None of these looks like Akira Toriyama did the art, and they aren't meant to, but they're still very Japanese games.

Aye Nier is awesome, possibly in the true sense of the word.

There aren't that many this generation because Japan seems intent on making WRPGs now. Sadly they are also producing more interesting WRPGs than the west.

El Shaddai maybe, not sure it's quite there aesthetically, certainly sticks out though.

Could also try Space Channel 5.2, that definitely looks Japanese :p Infamous naughty tentacle moment and all......

And everything is subjective, but it's within that realm of subjectivity that I, and the majority of reviewers, declare that about half of those games to suck. That said, I'm extremely harsh on anime style games that heavily typify/overuse the overplayed conventions of the genre they embody or series that they're a part of (I know, I picked the wrong style to be a fan of). Regardless, were those the only games you had?

isn't that a Dreamcast game?

El Shaddai looked interesting. I was considering picking it up. When I heard what Nier did to you after like the 3rd time around it kind of made me not want to play it.

Yeah Space Channel 5.2 was originally a Dreamcast game, then it got a PS2 port and now you can get it on PSN. It's *very* japanese.

You shouldn't overlook Nier it really is that good despite not having very good graphics by the platform standards. Amazing soundtrack and unique style, takes a little while to grab you but once it starts going it's fascinating.

You can just backup your save to a memory stick or something before you do the third playthrough if it bothers you.

Oh it's not that big of a deal, and it's not automatic, it's just one of the 4 endings that you can only get on round 3. And they couldn't make it any more clear that it's going to happen unless they literally plastered the screen in giant yellow letters. If it matters that much, you can always just back up your saves (is what I did).
