C&C 3 was badass; and while it wasn't particularly heady, Dawn of War 2 had a bitchin' campaign and multiplayer.

So far, it's Warcraft III. The custom maps are just so much fun.

[sub]What? No, not DotA. HLWL, Island Troll Tribes and TDs are what I'm talking about.[/sub]

Company of Heroes.

There is no question or hesitation when I say the following: Company of Heroes is the best RTS game on the market to date. It has so much strategy it makes other games look like economy simulators. It focuses almost entirely on the fun part of playing RTS games: the tactical strategy. There are very few games that do this quite as well as Company of Heroes does, the only other that comes close being Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. And, look at that, it's made by the same developer.

Relic has the right idea. Squad-based unit management, tactical strategy with cover and destructible environments, and so forth are what RTS games should be trying to emulate and use as a basis for success. By contrast, Starcraft II, while fun, is the same game that was released in 1997, only with better graphics. And, I'm sorry, but that just doesn't cut it anymore. It's strategic to a point, but after a bit, Starcraft just becomes an exercise in who can build the most units the fastest. And, really, that isn't what RTSes should be about. You should have to be tactical and strategic in the placement and use of your assets, not just churn out as many as possible and throw them into the grinder.

So yeah. Company of Heroes all the way.

As much as I love Command & Conquer and Starcraft, my favorite RTS is Homeworld. If you aren't familiar, it is a real-time strategy game in three dimensions, as in north and south, east and west AND up and down. It was so unique and the gameplay and story were very well done, not to mention the haunting soundtrack. I need to beat that game again.

Starcraft 2 has stolen my heart with awesome story telling and non repetitive missions.

Love it to pieces.

And if i i could get into a match of Overrun with people who at least build bunkers that Custom map is one of the coolest so far.

This, except Men of War.

Men of War = (Company of Heroes' awesomeness ^ holey shit) - (Relic's budget + Bad Voice Acting) + Insane Level of Detail = Best RTS Made Yet.

Machines

Massive under-hyped masterpiece of a game, played it so much when I was a kid and when I managed to get it working on my new computer a month ago a nostalgic tear came to my eye.
Frankly it was an early 3D RTS that involved armies of robots blowing up each other, it had nukes and AWESOME GORILLA ROBOTS!

And don't get me started on the Dungeon Keeper series . . .

And if you have a big group of people that know what they're doing, the Night of the Dead maps, many are very challenging.

What's wrong with DotA?

DotA? I just never got into it and I felt that I had way more fun with the other maps.

[sub]Also, +1 for the avatar.[/sub]

There are many RTS games I love.

But when I turn on Supreme Commander and have it running on dual 22" monitors - There is no other RTS for me. I love having dual screens on a game and so wish more games did this.

I don't like RTS games but Grim Grimmoire is amazing. Only problem is it's a real obscure title and has no multiplayer.

I have to agree with WC3 and SC2 and of course plain-old SC but I have no clue what TFT is.

I'm partial to a bit of Lord of the rings: BFME 2 sooo many good times on that game
