Here's a question that's been bothering me:

The end of the world as we know it is coming, or at the very least a long period of lawlessness, total anarchy and every-man-for-himself savagery. You are aware of this and want to prepare. One of the things you need to cover (aside from an ample supply of firearms) is food. What food do you stockpile?

The obvious answer might be "cans", but cans of what? Bear in mind, this might be the only food you'll see for years, even decades. Perhaps until the end of your days. Trying to survive for years on nothing but canned spam would likely result in scurvy and other nutritional deficiencies.

So, what food and in what form do you stock up on? Also, while hillarious answers are welcome, I'd like to see at least a few serious ones. :)

Soups would be good as they tend to have a variety of ingredients and are also edible even when sick or suffering from various medical conditions. They are also, of course, high in water content. Hygiene options are likely to be limited so tooth decay would be a very real problem, for example.

Other than that.. I'd make sure to keep a huge variety of different canned produce. Importantly, include sweets, deserts and more exotic foods that are not easy to find locally, as these would provide much needed variety and perhaps even be useful as currency.

After a while, you will wish that you had died in the Apocalypse. Unless malnutrition gets you first.

Ration Packs.

A number of different meals, usually a sweet or two and an incredibly long shelf life.

From what I've been told, the French make the best ration packs. The Australian Army packs are made in New Zealand, and theirs are made here for some reason. I believe the American ones even have self heating meals now.

A little bit of everything. A nutritionally sound diet with meat, fruits and vegetables is important, even in the event of catastrophic collapse of civilization. One must be physically sound to scavenge supplies from the broken world, or run from the roving bands of cannibals hungering for your flesh.

Remember, If you don't have your health, you don't have anything.

MREs my friend. They last for upwards of 20 years, require nothing but water to heat and even if you don't have that you can eat it cold. Hell most of them are pretty good too, especially the enchilada and similar dishes. Just stay away from omelet and other egg stuff.

Why, Twinkies of course. Didn't you watch Family Guy? Those things will survive a Nuke easily. Who wouldn't want to buy a Twinkie for 100 Caps?

Yep, add water to the pouch and watch chemical magic happen, though if you're not careful you can get yourself burned.

And here's me, stuck out bush with a hexi stove and a canteen of water that I have to boil up if I want a luke warm meal.

I'm not going to stockpile food. I plan to eat the radioactive wildlife with a spork!

Get rid of the hexi and get a little gas cooker. You will save so much time, and you wont stink your pit out with hexi.

Anyway Ration Packs are the best, i had a NASA ration pack once. It had Ice Cream, it was amazing.
