Everything matters in a game, simple as that. If anything is sub-par than it will take away from the experience, people who say that one particular thing is the only thing that makes a game good are lying.

Honestly, graphics DON'T matter, but only in certain circumstances.
In an FPS or RPG or most things in first-person, graphics help draw the player in, and give them a feeling of actually BEING in the game world.
In something like Magicka or Diablo, it shouldn't really matter.
Hell, one of my favourite games right now is 'Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup' (Strange name I know), and it's really immersive.
Apart from when I play as a hand-axe-wielding demigod murdering giant cockroaches.

YES! this is why i still can go back and play final fantasy 7 and crono trigger over and over agan, What you are saying is Graphics on box art sell games, and you want people that look at it to go, OHHHHH NEW AND SHINY!

So basically the same crowd that buys every new apple product. Well, atleast you know how to target the people with disposable income

The thing is, if I just take one look at a screenshot to see if the game looks good or not, I look at the content rather than the graphics. A photorealistic rendition of a pot plant is still just a pot plant, while something more interesting that looks a lot worse graphically speaking, can still be loads more eye-catching.

Bottom line: Good graphics can not make a boring game interesting. At least not to me.

No graphics aren't the be all and end all. Yes they are important and can help with immersion but they should always be residual. Things like a good story, gameplay and a GAME WITHOUT BUGS should all come before graphics. Besides realistic graphics always look crap in a few years anyway so they should try and stylize where possible. Games that are toon shaded age ridiculously well so do spirites well spirites towards the end of the era.

I tended to scream about graphics not mattering a lot at one point. Then I realized that graphics can convey a story and convey meaning just as much as anything else. Not the best, most cutting edge, money-pouring-out-of-our-asses graphics, but graphics that support the game itself. Where would, say, Team Fortress 2 be if it looked like a bog-standard manshoot, even if everything else stayed the same? Dead in a goddamn ditch, that's where.

So yes, graphics matter a great deal. But you need to MAKE them matter first.

He sort of has a point, but here's the thing... not all games are meant to be immersive... sometimes a game is just a game. Let's be honest here, is a multiplayer competitive shooter ever immersive? I can still play quake 3 and have just as much fun as black ops.

So Bethesda believes good graphics are key to immersion in a game. Fair enough, but then why do Bethesda games have such bad graphics?

Gameplay and story are always more important than graphics to me. Especially nowadays the difference between graphics are usually really tiny details. I didn't even upgrade from DirectX9 for a long time, because i didn't think the graphical differences would have been worth it.

Graphics don't even have to be realistic to be beautiful or immersive. 2D if well made is just as good.

But can you honestly tell me, if the next Assassin's Creed or Elder Scrolls or whatever big-name you want to use came out, and its graphical capability and textures were of the level of Minecraft, that you would not feel cheated? Or insulted? Or amused that such large companies thought they could get away with that kind of product?
If they used an art-style to compensate for lower-graphical quality, I would probably not care.
Seriously, you don't need everything to be photo-realistic, as impressive as it is.

For instance, I found Braid and Castle Crashers perfect in terms of graphics and they were pretty much hand-drawn. Also, Saint's Row 2 is one of my favourite games ever and it has worse graphics than the first game!

Now, if Skyrim came out in a "drawn on paper" sort of style with low-end graphics disguised by being presented as outlines and colours... I could live with that. I really could.

Here's the thing. The graphics for Minecraft fit the theme incredibly well. I go as far as saying most "Hi-Res" texture packs for Minecraft look like ass and don't have the same charm as the classic skins.

Thing is, especially for a game like Skyrim, having good graphics only serves to increase the total immersion into an epic fantasy world.
I don't believe so, as I mentioned above, you could keep the graphics as low-end as you wanted if you applied the right art styles to the game.

Black and white, "on paper" (Okami) or something else that just makes the game look good, despite the "simple" graphics.

As always, I am sure someone has already stated this, but given Moviebob's Pc Gaming is dead speech, it makes me wonder. (queue twilight zone music) Imagine if you will, A world where publishers provide screen shots of games at the lowest graphical setting. A world where the
developers are encouraged to make a game available to the broadest market. A world where, if you have that uber comp, everything will look better. A world where if you don't, you can still play the game. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between fandom and enjoyment.
You have just step into, the awesome zone.
All joking aside, if a game interests me; I want to be able to play it without having to buy another pc upgrade or console add on, in addition to the game.

Yeah, but if you're going to give us a 5 hour main quest-line and a sprinkle a few side quests so you can stuff your awesome graphics down our throat with Skyrim, I will hunt you down you little weasel.

Graphics matter, just like any other aspect of the game.
A great game with shitty graphics would be better with good graphics.
To judge a game purely on its graphics is still retarded though.

Man, these captcha prompts come up way too often.

Graphics mean basically nothing to me. In fact, I wish I could just turn all the settings down and the new pretty games would look like Half-Life. That way I wouldn't have to buy a new computer.

To me it's all about the world design/architecture. I can pretty confidently say that I've said "Woooowww :O" in Minecraft as many and more times as a game with pretty graphics.
