Bethesda Won't Rule Out External Development for Elder Scrolls Games

The non-Bethesda studio would have to figure out a way to gain some Elder Scrolls experience.

Since its inception in the early nineties, every Elder Scrolls game has been created by a member of the Bethesda family, whether Bethesda itself or its mobile-focused sister company Vir2L. That might not always be the case however; as Bethesda's Todd Howard says that the studio won't rule out letting an outside studio having a crack at the series.

It's probably not very likely though, as Bethesda's preference is keep development of the Elder Scrolls series as internal as possible. Bethesda has used outside developers for one of its franchises before; the most recent Fallout game, New Vegas was made by Obsidian. Howard said that that was a special case though, with all the conditions lining up just right to make that happen. "New Vegas was unique," he said. "We wanted to do something with Obsidian, we knew we were moving on Elder Scrolls, they had a team available ... But they had experience with the IP, and with Elder Scrolls we don't have that."

There's a world of difference between "not ruling it out" and "we're definitely doing this," but it's a fun to think of what other developers would make of the Elder Scrolls series. Would Crytek's take be gorgeous, but focused on ranged combat, or would BioWare's vision be open in the middle, but less so at the beginning and end? We may never find out, but then again, maybe we will.

Skyrim, the next Bethesda-made installment in The Elder Scrolls, comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11th.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Obsidian working on a Bethesda engine again, but if they do, please playtest it this time? I loved New Vegas but the bugs were infuriating.

Edit: Also in before baseless Obsidian bashing.

Hand off the "Race" games like Redguard to another developer! Let more linear and traditional RPGs exist in the TES universe!

I really want to play the Eye of Argonia.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see all the stuff about the Black Marsh they've been bulshitting for years be made real.
Lol, digestive tree subways.

Wait, what? I'm pretty sure the New Vegas bugs were far worse than any in FO3. Get your facts completely straight; I'm not going to deny Obsidian has some more ability writing an overarching story but saying their games have less bugs is laughable.

If you mean playable in terms of gameplay, let me point you to Alpha Protocol. New Vegas just took the ADS mod for FO3 and made a crappier version of it.

Something like this could work well as a bridge between Bethesda releases, rather like FONV but probably with a bit more spacing. I probably would have nominated Arkane as a possibility for a tighter, more traditional spin-off (perhaps a spiritual sequel to Arx Fatalis) but now they're a sister company so I guess they don't count.

I do think an Elder Scrolls spin-off would do well.

I do not want this to happen. I really think Bethesda is the only developer that can make Elder Scrolls feel like Elder Scrolls, and even they aren't as good at it as I would like sometimes. But I wouldn't mind some sort of spin off developed outside of Bethesda. Spin offs are great. They can take a series in a new direction without plunging the series as whole into darkness if it sucks, or if the older fans aren't on board. But a proper numbered TES title developed outside Bethesda? No thanks bub.

While I fully support keeping the main series out of other hands, why not use external studios in things like a remake of Redguard, Battlespire, or such?

Imagine Redguard, but with Assassin's Creed-like gameplay. Combine that with a great story and I think that it'll sell quite good.

I would rather the main series was kept in-house. I would quite like to see some Redguard style spinoff games though, that could be good.

Oh yea.
A constantly crashing TES game sounds like fun.
What, like every Elder Scrolls game?

OT: Sounds good to me. I would really like to see Obsidian's take on Elder Scrolls, for instance.

Just don't give it to Obsidian. Those guys never released a finished product in their life. Bethesda games are buggy, but Obsidian doesn't even test their games. Every Obsidian game is a bugfest. They have all of these amazing ideas, but they are too lazy to make their games properly.

I would give Bioware a go at it, if they weren't owned by EA.

How about Rocksteady Studios or Avalanche Studios? They both made only a few titles, and all of them are great, almost bug free super fun experiences.

Yes Escapist. Let us suggest that Bioware make The Elder Scrolls so that they may make it an Origin exclusive.

At least EA has the same line of thinking with horse armour.

They don't do the play testing. Bethesda personally took the play testing job. Blame Bethesda for bugs in New Vegas.

All the features were from Fallout 1-2. Modders copied the originals, obsidian didn't copy the modders. Also, look up.
You know that A) Obsidian didn't make Fallout 1/2 and B)Obsidian did do the testing, not Bethesda.

See: http://www.gamebanshee.com/news/98561-bethesda-softworks-inside-the-vault-qaa-casey-kwock.html

Golly, I wonder how Obsidian didn't do playtesting on FO:NV when this interview is from an Obsidian guy who did playtesting on FO:NV...

Also: "We're also playing the game in our QA department to fix any other issues we can find on our end. What we do is come on to the forums and make sure that even common issues we spot there we can get testers looking at." Obsidian's designer Chris Avellone.

Finally, Obsidian did copy the modders. I really would love to visit your world where FO1/2 were first person and had ADS. Oh wait, them being iso kinda prevents that.
